The Effects Of Vacuum Annealing Temperatures On The Microstructure, Mechanical Properties And Electrical Resistivity Of Mg-3al-1zn Alloy Ribbons, Fenghua Chen, Qingxue Huang, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Binyu Sun, Yugui Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper investigates the influence of vacuum annealing temperature on the microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical resistivity of Mg-3Al-1Zn rapid solidification (RS) magnesium ribbons. The results indicate that when the annealing temperature is increased, the grain size of the ribbons is dramatically reduced from 10 to 1 μm. The highest break stress and micro-hardness is obtained at 673 K. These effects are ascribed to the dispersion strengthening caused by the high amount of fine nanoparticles distributed in the material. Electrical resistivity-temperature (ρ-T) curves have been used to provide useful information about the effects of the annealing temperature on the grain …

Time-Dependent Mechanical Properties Of Tough Ionic-Covalent Hybrid Hydrogels, Hai Xin, Hugh Ralph Brown, Sina Naficy, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Hybrid gels featuring interpenetrating covalent and ionic crosslinked networks have recently been shown to exhibit both high toughness and recoverability of strain-induced network damage. The high toughness results from the energy dissipated as entropically strained network strands are released by the dissociation of ionic crosslinks. As in the so-called double network hydrogels, the toughening process is inherently linked to network damage. This damage, however, can be recovered to a large degree in hybrid gels due to the reformation of ionic associations when the gel is unloaded. The stability of the ionic network under load is here investigated and it is …

Due to a high propensity of nano-particles to agglomerate, making aluminium matrix composites with a uniform dispersion of the nano-particles using liquid routes is an exceptionally difficult task. In this study, an innovative approach was utilised to prevent agglomeration of nano-particle by encapsulating SiC nano-particles using graphene sheets during ball milling. Subsequently, the milled mixture was incorporated into A356 molten alloy using non-contact ultrasonic vibration method. Two different shapes for graphene sheets were characterised using HRTEM, including onion-like shells encapsulating SiC particles and disk-shaped graphene nanosheets. This resulted in 45% and 84% improvement in yield strength and tensile ductility, respectively. …

Thermal Stability And Properties Of Deformation-Processed Cu-Fe In Situ Composites, Keming Liu, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Jin Zou, Lei Lu, Deping Lu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper investigated the thermal stability, tensile strength, and conductivity of deformation-processed Cu-14Fe in situ composites produced by thermo-mechanical processing. The thermal stability was analyzed using scanning electronic microscope and transmission electron microscope. The tensile strength and conductivity were evaluated using tensile-testing machine and micro-ohmmeter, respectively. The Fe fibers in the deformation-processed Cu-14Fe in situ composites undergo edge recession, longitudinal splitting, cylinderization, break-up, and spheroidization during the heat treatment. The Cu matrix experiences recovery, recrystallization, and precipitation phase transition. The tensile strength and conductivity first increase with increasing temperature of heat treatment, reach peak values at different temperatures, and then …

The Effect Of Geometry And Material Properties On The Performance Of A Small Hydraulic Mckibben Muscle System, Danial Sangian, Sina Naficy, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Bertrand Tondu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Fluidic McKibben artificial muscles are one of the most popular biomimetic actuators, showing similar static and dynamic performance to skeletal muscles. In particular, their pneumatic version offers high-generated force, high speed and high strain in comparison to other actuators. This paper investigates the development of a small-size, fully enclosed, hydraulic McKibben muscle powered by a low voltage pump. Hydraulic McKibben muscles with an outside diameter of 6 mm and a length ranging from 35 mm to 80 mm were investigated. These muscles are able to generate forces up to 26 N, strains up to 23%, power to mass of 30 …

A Combined Experimental-Numerical Approach For Determining Mechanical Properties Of Aluminum Subjects To Nanoindentation, Mao Liu, Cheng Lu, A Kiet Tieu, Ching-Tun Peng, Charlie Kong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) model has been developed to investigate the mechanical properties and micro-texture evolution of single-crystal aluminum induced by a sharp Berkovich indenter. The load-displacement curves, pile-up patterns and lattice rotation angles from simulation are consistent with the experimental results. The pile-up phenomenon and lattice rotation have been discussed based on the theory of crystal plasticity. In addition, a polycrystal tensile CPFEM model has been established to explore the relationship between indentation hardness and yield stress. The elastic constraint factor C is slightly larger than conventional value 3 due to the strain hardening.

Effects Of Grain Boundaries In Oxide Scale On Tribological Properties Of Nanoparticles Lubrication, Xianglong Yu, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Dongbin Wei, Cunlong Zhou, Qingxue Huang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The characters of grain boundaries in oxide layers formed on substrates influence adhesion and friction behaviour, surface fracture and wear during high temperature steel processing. In this work, an electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis was conducted to investigate the role of surface grain boundary and orientation in magnetite (Fe3O4)/haematite (α-Fe2O3) scale during hot rolling, and further evaluate their effects on tribological properties of water-based nanoparticles lubrication. The results demonstrate that Fe3O4 (100) plane is strongly sensitive to the surface characteristics as the minimisation of surface energy. Coincident site lattice …

Effect Of Pre-Quenching Process On Microstructure And Mechanical Properties In A Nb-Microalloyed Low Carbon Q-P Steel, Jun Zhang, Hua Ding, Jingwei Zhao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A refined microstructure consisting of martensite and retained austenite at room temperature has been produced in a Nb-microalloyed low carbon Si-Mn steel by a novel heat-treatment, pre-quenching prior to quenching and partitioning processes (Q&Q-P). The results showed that compared with the conventional quenching and partitioning steel the mechanical properties of steel obtained by the novel treatment have been significantly improved, with a good combination of ultimate tensile strength (1000MPa) and total elongation (above 30%). Meanwhile, the volume fraction of retained austenite has been increased. It was found that the improvement of mechanical properties was mainly attributed to the enhanced TRIP …

Fatigue Properties Of Intact Sandstone In Pre And Post-Failure And Its Implication To Vibratory Rock Cutting, M N. Badge, Shivakumar Karekal

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The pre-and post-failure fatigue properties of intact sandstone subjected to uni-axial cyclical loading in the laboratory is presented with its possible implication to vibratory rock cutting. The fatigue results subjected to sinusoidal, ramp and square waveforms at cyclic loading frequency of 5 Hz and peak amplitude of 0.05 mm is discussed herewith. It is observed that fatigue behaviour is a function of the dynamic energy of the load and the shape of the waveform. From the presented results, the practical significance of the behaviour of rock and rock masses within the excavation systems subjected to cyclic loads, especially in the …
