Microstructural Evolution And Mechanical Property Of Aa5050 Alloy Deformed By Accumulative Roll Bonding, Kuiyu Cheng, Cheng Lu, A Kiet Tieu, Hongtao Zhu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this study, ultrafine-grained AA5050 sheets were fabricated by the accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process. Transmission electron microscope observations showed that at the early stage of ARB, the grain size was reduced in the normal direction and became elongated along the rolling direction. The elongated grains were cut out by dense dislocations, which then tangled and condensed, resulting in the formation of dislocation cells. As the deformation proceeded, the dislocation cells evolved to sub-grain boundaries and then grain boundaries. The ultrafinegrained microstructure was obtained via four ARB cycles. The tensile tests at 473 K and 523 K (200 degrees C …

Effects Of Temperature And Strain Rate On Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of High Chromium Cast Iron/Low Carbon Steel Bimetal Prepared By Hot Diffusion-Compression Bonding, Xingjian Gao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Sihai Jiao, Dengfu Chen, Jianzhong Xu, Xiaoming Zhang, Dianyao Gong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The objective of this study is to develop a hot diffusion-compression bonding process for cladding low carbon steel (LCS) to high chromium cast iron (HCCI) in solid-state. The influence of temperature (950-1150 degrees C) and strain rate (0.001-1 s (1)) on microstructure, hardness and bond strength of the HCCI/LCS bimetal were investigated. The interface microstructure reveals that the unbonded region can only be found for 950 degrees C due to lack of diffusion, while the intergrowth between the constituent metals occurred at and above 1100 degrees C. When bonding temperature increases to 1150 degrees C, a carbide-free zone was observed …

Molecular Weight Distribution Of Network Strands In Double Network Hydrogels Estimated By Mechanical Testing, Hai Xin, Hugh Ralph Brown, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The remarkably high toughness of double network (DN) hydrogels is related to the energy dissipation that occurs due to the scission of network strands in the most tightly crosslinked of its two interpenetrating networks. The loading curve during tensile testing of DN hydrogels usually takes a complex shape and sometimes shows yielding. Wang and Hong recently proposed a model [1] based on the successive scission of the shortest remaining elastically active strands during tensile loading that predicts the shape of the loading curve of one DN hydrogel reasonably well. In the present study, the model was modified slightly and applied …

A Validated Thermo Mechanical Fem Model Of Bead-On-Plate Welding, Djarot Darmadi, A Kiet Tieu, John Norrish

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper is presenting accurate FEM model of bead-on-plate welds of 316L stainless steels through thermo-mechanical analysis. The model was composed using ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) program. In thermal analysis, mixed mode of volumetric thermal load was used to represent moving heat source. Growing weld bead was accommodated in both the thermal and mechanical models using birth and death technique. Melting phenomenon was modelled by low stiffness and zero plastic strain of melting elements. Results from thermal analysis and subsequent mechanical analysis have been validated. Good agreements of predicted temperature histories, temperature field and residual stress with experimental results …

Electro-Mechanical Modelling And Identification Of Electroactive Polymer Actuators As Smart Robotic Manipulators, Rahim Mutlu, Gursel Alici, Xingcan Xiang, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Electroactive polymer (EAP) actuators, also known as artificial muscles, have remarkable properties such as low energy consumption, low weight, low actuation foot-print, compliance and bio-compatibility. Several methodologies have been proposed to model and analyse their quasi-static bending behaviour with negligible attention paid to their dynamic behaviour. We, therefore, report on an enhanced methodology to model their highly non-linear bending behaviour by treating them as smart and soft robotic manipulators. The methodology consists of an inverse kinematic model and a dynamic model. The proposed methodology accurately estimates the EAP actuator's whole shape deflection using optimization-based inverse kinematic solutions integrated with an …

Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Aa5005/Aa6061 Laminated Composite Processed By Accumulative Roll Bonding, Lihong Su, Cheng Lu, Guanyu Deng, A Kiet Tieu Jan 2014

Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Aa5005/Aa6061 Laminated Composite Processed By Accumulative Roll Bonding, Lihong Su, Cheng Lu, Guanyu Deng, A Kiet Tieu

ULTRAFINE-GRAINED (UFG) materials have been gathering much interest for the last two decades as the materials have extraordinary mechanical properties such as high strength, low temperature superplastisity, and high corrosion resistance. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is the most widely used method to produce UFG materials. Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) has become one of the most important SPD techniques since it was first introduced by Saito et al.[1] As the same equipment as in conventional rolling is used, ARB is considered to be one of the most promising methods for manufacturing UFG sheet materials.

The Effect Of Ageing On Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Powder Ti-5al-5mo-5v-1cr-1fe Alloy, Mansur Ahmed, Dmytro Savvakin, Orest M. Ivasishin, E V. Pereloma Jan 2014

The Effect Of Ageing On Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Powder Ti-5al-5mo-5v-1cr-1fe Alloy, Mansur Ahmed, Dmytro Savvakin, Orest M. Ivasishin, E V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The thermo-mechanically processed powder Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-1Cr-1Fe alloy was aged at 9.23 K for 1-8 h in order to investigate the effect of ageing time on the microstructure-mechanical properties relationships. The microstructures of the alloy after ageing cosist of the both primary and secondary alpha phases with retained B matrix phase. The shift of B peaks in X-ray pattern with ageing time indicates an increase in lattice parameter distorition due to diffusion into the retained B phase of more B stabilisers with smaller atomic radius compared to the elemental Ti. The tensile test results indicate that the sample aged for 1 h …

The conventional method to prepare functional oxides is ceramicpowder- based processing typically via solid-state reaction of microcrystalline starting powders at high temperatures. Disadvantages of this approach include the high temperatures of reaction, limited degree of product chemical homogeneity and difficulties in achieving rapid sintering. Various chemicalbased processing routes have been developed to prepare powders of more homogeneous composition, improved reactivity and sintering ability at low temperatures. Regardless of the route chosen to synthesise complex oxides, almost all of them require lengthy heat treatment schedules that usually exceed 10 h, as well as multi-stage processing steps. We describe two approaches to …
