An Integrated Dielectrophoresis-Active Hydrophoretic Microchip For Continuous Particle Filtration And Separation, Sheng Yan, Jun Zhang, Chao Pan, Dan Yuan, Gursel Alici, Haiping Du, Yonggang Zhu, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Microfluidic manipulation of biological objects from mixture has a significant application in sample preparation and clinical diagnosis. This work presents a dielectrophoresis-active hydrophoretic device for continuous label-free particle separation and filtration. This device comprises interdigitated electrodes and a hydrophoretic channel. According to the difference of lateral positions of polystyrene particles, the device can run at separation or filtration modes by altering the power supply voltages. With an applied voltage of 24 Vp-p, both 3 and 10 μm beads had close lateral positions and were redirected to the same outlet. Under a voltage of 36 Vp-p, beads with the diameters of …

Analytical Solutions For Filtration Process Based On The Constriction Size Concept, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Vo Trong Nguyen, Ashok Raut

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, an analytical model was proposed to describe the filtration process applicable to a base soil-filter system. The Navier-Stokes equation for porous media was used to capture the hydrodynamic behavior, while numerically a new algorithm has been proposed to solve the Navier-Stokes equation in non-linear form. The various mixtures of base particles eroded and water flow within the system was computed using the work-energy principle incorporating the constriction size of the filter. The model can assess the filtration process through the flow rate, and the accumulation and erosion of base soil within the filter. By discretising the base …

The various mixtures of base soil particles eroded and water flow within the system are computed using the workenergy principle incorporating the constriction size of the filter. The model can assess the filtration process through the flowrate and the accumulation and redistribution of fine particles within the filter. By discretizing the base soil and filter domains …

99mtc-Dtpa Volume Of Distribution, Half-Life And Glomerular Filtration Rate In Normal Adults, Jennifer L. Holness, John S. Fleming, Alessandra Malaroda, James M. Warwick

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Assessment of volume of distribution (VD) and half-life (T1/2) values during glomerular filtration rate (GFR) investigations is a useful quality control check. The aim of this study was to derive reference data for VD and T1/2 and also to provide reference data for GFR fro studies performed using 99mTc-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid.

De Filtration To Remove Cryptosporidium, Jerry E. Ongerth, Primrose E. Hutton

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Laboratory-scale testing investigated the degree of Cryptosporidium oocyst reduction provided by diatomaceous earth (DE) filtration. Three grades of DE from two manufacturers were used in the tests. Reduction was measured using seeded river water applied to Walton test filters. Tests were run for filtration rates of 1 and 2 gpm/sq ft (2.4 and 4.9 m/h). Each run was replicated three times, and quality control was rigorous. Approximately 6 logs of reduction in the concentration of Cryptosporidium oocysts can be expected under routine operating conditions using DE grades having permeability of <1.2 Darcy. Log reductions varied predictably according to the permeability of the DE grade and the filtration rate; they were significantly higher at the higher filtration rate. Agreement was excellent between runs, enabling researchers to distinguish with consistent statistical significance the differences in performance.
