The aim of this study is to better understand the external and internal drivers that affect residential air-conditioning (A/C) use decisions and occupant comfort. Field observations were carried out using instrumental measurements and smartphone questionnaires, recording householder's A/C usage patterns, indoor/outdoor climatic factors, perception of thermal comfort and adaptive behaviours.

The ballasted railroads form an integral part of the modern transportation infrastructure in Australia. However, they are subjected to large stresses especially on mixed traffic lines, where heavy freight trains are operated. Under such adverse operational conditions, ballast progressively degrades contributing to overall track deformations and frequent maintenance. Maintaining geometry of ballast embankments is necessary to improve safety and efficiency of railway operations. The use of artificial inclusions (geosynthetics and shock mats) as well as recycled (discarded) ballast in track can be economically viable options. In this paper we prove the existence of classical solutions to near field reflector problems, both for a point light source and for a parrallel light source, with planar recievers. These problems involve monge-Ampere type equations, subject to nonlinear oblique boundary conditions. Our approach builds on earlier work in the optimal transportation case by Trudinger and Wang and makes use of a recent extension of degree theory to oblique boundary conditioins by Li, Liu and Nguyen.

Water resource problems currently are much more important in proper planning especially for arid regions, such as Gansu in China. For agricultural and industrial activities, prediction of groundwater status is critical. As a main branch of neural network, shallow artificial neural network models have been deployed in prediction areas such as groundwater and rainfall since late 1980s. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) model within a newly proposed algorithm has been developed for groundwater status forecasting. Light field (LF) rendering is widely used in free viewpoint video systems (FVV). Different methods have been proposed to employ depth maps to improve the rendering quality. However, estimation of depth is often error-prone. In this paper, a new method based on the concept of effective sampling density (ESD) is proposed for evaluating the depth-based LF rendering algorithms at different levels of errors in the depth estimation. Although wide bore computed tomography (CT) scanners provide increased space for patients, the scan field of view (sFOV) remains considerably smaller than the bore size. Consequently, patient anatomy which spans beyond the sFOV is truncated and the information is lost. In a light field-based free viewpoint video (LF-based FVV) system, effective sampling density (ESD) is defined as the number of rays per unit area of the scene that has been acquired and is selected in the rendering process for reconstructing an unknown ray. This paper extends the concept of ESD and shows that ESD is a tractable metric that quantifies the joint impact of the imperfections of LF acquisition and rendering. High-tech robots called PackBots will be unleashed during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil to help boost security and examine suspicious objects. The Brazilian government purportedly spent US$7.2 million to buy 30 military-grade robots from designers iRobot that will police the stadiums throughout Brazil's 12 host cities during soccer matches. PackBot is a hunk of metal with an extendable arm and tactile claw, jam-packed on-board sensors and a computer with overheat protection, nine high-resolution cameras and lasers and two-way audio. But is it overkill to implement wartime robots to a sporting event?

The commissioning of treatment planning systems and beam modeling requires measured input parameters. The measurement of relative output in-air, Sc is particularly difficult for small fields. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of miniphantom design and detector selection on measured Sc values for small fields and to validate the measurements against Monte Carlo simulations. Measurements were performed using brass caps (with sidewalls) or tops (no sidewalls) of varying heights and widths. The classical orbits of an electron with anisotropic mass interacting with a Coulomb center in the presence of a magnetic field are investigated. It is shown that the shape and duration of the closed orbits depend on the magnetic-field direction. Reasonable agreement with available experimental results for donor-doped silicon samples in a magnetic field is found, when the energy value of the conduction electron is appropriately chosen.

Phosphorous donors in silicon have an electronic structure that mimics the hydrogen atom, albeit on a larger length, smaller energy and smaller magnetic field scale. While the hydrogen atom is spherically symmetric, an applied magnetic field imposes cylindrical symmetry, and the solid-state analogue involves, in addition, the symmetry of the Si crystal. For one magnetic field direction, all six conduction-band valleys of Si:P become equivalent. New experimental data to high laboratory fields (30 T), supported by new calculations, demonstrate that this high symmetry field orientation allows the most direct comparison with free hydrogen.

Purpose: To cope with intrafraction tumor motion, integrated MRI-linac systems for real-time image guidance are currently under development. The multileaf collimator (MLC) is a key component in every state-of-the-art radiotherapy treatment system, allowing for accurate field shaping and tumor tracking. This work quantifies the magnetic impact of a widely used MLC on the MRI field homogeneity for such a modality. Methods: Results: Conclusions: This work shows that the MRI field distortions caused by the MLC cannot be ignored and must be thoroughly investigated for any MRI-linac system. Detecting multiple humans in crowded scenes is challenging because the humans are often partially or even totally occluded by each other. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for partial inter-occlusion reasoning in human detection based on variational mean field theory. The proposed algorithm can be integrated with various part-based human detectors using different types of features, object representations, and classifiers. The algorithm takes as the input an initial set of possible human objects (hypotheses) detected using a part-based human detector. The use of electroactive polymeric materials for sensing and actuating applications is very attractive due to important properties like low operating voltage, low form factor, or high mechanical flexibility. However, its use has been conditioned by the lack of available processing methods for such materials. The deposition of thin layers is very easy by conventional techniques; however obtaining patterned layers is not a trivial task. This paper presents a methodology suitable to fabricate electroactive polymeric microstructures on large area devices. Structures ranging from ∼1, 5 mm to ∼100 μm width, with a thickness of ∼12 μm, were obtained.

The roll-casting technology of 5000 series aluminum alloy is one of the difficulties at present. Roll-casting technology was employed in this paper and high quality 5005 aluminum alloy sheets were fabricated successfully under different conditions. The solidification of melt in roll-casting process is the rapid directional solidification. The effect of magnetostatic field on microstructure of 5005 aluminum alloy sheet by roll-casting has been investigated and analyzed. The results indicate that imposing magnetostatic field can refine the grains of 5005 aluminum alloy.

Based on the thermal conduction equations, the three-dimensional (3D) temperature field of a work roll was investigated using finite element method (FEM). The variations in the surface temperature of the work roll during hot strip rolling were described, and the thermal stress field of the work roll was also analyzed. The results showed that the highest roll surface temperature is 593 °C, and the difference between the minimum and maximum values of thermal stress of the work roll surface is 145. 7 MPa. Detection of objects in images in an automated fashion is necessary for many applications, including automated target recognition. In this paper, we present results of boundary detection using Markov random fields. Once the boundaries of regions are detected, object recognition can be conducted to classify the regions within the boundaries. Thus, an approach that gives good boundary detection is very important in many automated target recognition systems. Our algorithm for boundary detection combines a Bayesian approach with a histogram specification technique to locate edges of objects that have a closed-loop boundary. Use of a one-dimensional neighbour method of analysis in 1019 variety trials of a range of crops conducted by plant breeders in four states of Australia in 1985–87 resulted in an average reduction of 42% in variances of varietal yield differences compared with conventional randomized complete block analysis. Of these trials, 219 were designed as square, rectangular or generalized lattices and the average reduction in variances of varietal yields with incomplete block analysis and recovery of interblock information was 33%. Two scries of simulation experiments were used to investigate the accuracy of treatment and variance estimation with a neighbour analysis of field trials proposed by Gleeson & Cullis (1987). The first series examined the accuracy of residual maximum likelihood (REML) estimation of seven theoretical error models applicable to field trials. REML estimation provided accurate estimates of the variance parameters, but the Ftest of treatments was slightly biased upward (to +2·4%) for first differences models and slightly biased downwards (to –1·4%) for second differences models.
