Etching Process Related Changes And Effects On Solid-Core Single-Mode Polymer Optical Fiber Grating, Kishore Bhowmik, Gang-Ding Peng, Yanhua Luo, Eliathamby Ambikairajah, Vedran Lovric, William R. Walsh, Ginu Rajan

Etching process related material and mechanical changes on solid-core single-mode polymer optical fiber (POF) and their influence on the characteristic properties of polymer fiber Bragg gratings (PFBGs) are studied. A poly(methyl methacrylate)-based POF is etched to different diameters, and it is experimentally demonstrated that etching can lead to a change in the Young's modulus of the fiber. It is found that etching process induced material changes of the polymer fiber can enhance the reflectivity and inherent sensitivity of PFBGs. It is demonstrated that gratings based on etched POF exhibit higher reflectivity with a shorter exposure time compared with unetched ones. …

Ambient Controlled Synthesis Of Advanced Core-Shell Plasmonic Ag@Zno Photocatalysts, Jinyan Xiong, Qiao Sun, Jun Chen, Zhen Li, S X. Dou Jan 2016

Ambient Controlled Synthesis Of Advanced Core-Shell Plasmonic Ag@Zno Photocatalysts, Jinyan Xiong, Qiao Sun, Jun Chen, Zhen Li, S X. Dou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Plasmonic Ag@ZnO core-shell hybrids, including hetero-nanowires and hetero-nanoparticles, have been synthesized at room temperature for application in photocatalysis. The morphology, size, crystal structure, and composition of the products were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. It was found the concentration of Zn(NO3)2·6H2O and the amount of water play crucial roles in the formation of Ag@ZnO core-shell hybrids. The resultant Ag@ZnO core-shell hybrids exhibit much higher photocatalytic activity and stability towards degradation of organic contaminants than pure ZnO nanocrystals under solar light irradiation. The one-dimensional (1D) core-shell hetero-nanowires prepared under optimal conditions …

Application Of Saturated Core Fault Current Limiters To Interconnected Distribution Networks, Sasareka Gunawardana Mudalige, Sarath Perera, Jeffrey W. Moscrop Jan 2015

Application Of Saturated Core Fault Current Limiters To Interconnected Distribution Networks, Sasareka Gunawardana Mudalige, Sarath Perera, Jeffrey W. Moscrop

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

There is an increasing need for electricity utilities to limit fault levels in critical locations in power systems so that existing switchgear can continue to function as expected. This is particularly true in electrical distribution systems, where the increased penetration of renewable and decentralised generation is forcing the network to be highly interconnected in order to allow for higher integration capacity and reliable operation. Consequently, the short-circuit currents in distribution systems have increased significantly. In this background, application of fault current limiting devices is one of the solutions that is being considered by the Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs). A …

Behaviour Of Hollow Core Square Reinforced Concrete Columns Wrapped With Cfrp With Different Fibre Orientations, Muhammad N. Hadi, T D. Le Jan 2014

Behaviour Of Hollow Core Square Reinforced Concrete Columns Wrapped With Cfrp With Different Fibre Orientations, Muhammad N. Hadi, T D. Le

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Results of testing twelve hollow core square reinforced concrete columns wrapped with Carbon fibre 33 reinforced polymer (CFRP) are presented. The effect of fibre orientation on the performance of specimens 34 under concentric and eccentric loads was investigated. Twelve specimens were divided into four groups with three 36 specimens each. The specimens in the first reference group were unwrapped, while the specimens in the 37 remaining groups were wrapped with CFRP of different wrap combinations of three fibre orientations. The specimens in each group were tested 39 under three eccentricities: 0 (concentric), 25, and 50 mm up to failure. Test results …

Analytical Nonlinear Reluctance Model Of A Single-Phase Saturated Core Fault Current Limiter, Philip A. Commins, Jeffrey W. Moscrop Jan 2013

Analytical Nonlinear Reluctance Model Of A Single-Phase Saturated Core Fault Current Limiter, Philip A. Commins, Jeffrey W. Moscrop

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A saturated core fault current limiter (FCL) is a device that is designed to limit the fault currents in electrical energy networks and consequently, protect existing network equipment from damage. Due to complex nonlinear magnetic properties, the performance of saturated core FCLs has largely been characterized through experimentation and finite-element analysis simulations. Although both of these techniques are quite accurate, they are time consuming and do not describe the behavior of FCLs in actual electrical networks. This has led to an increasing demand for an accurate analytical model that is suitable for transient network analyses. This paper presents the development …

Experimental Analysis Of The Magnetic Flux Characteristics Of Saturated Core Fault Current Limiters, Jeffrey W. Moscrop Jan 2013

Experimental Analysis Of The Magnetic Flux Characteristics Of Saturated Core Fault Current Limiters, Jeffrey W. Moscrop

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A fault current limiter (FCL) is a device that is designed to reduce the impact of fault currents on electricity networks and increase the availability of such networks to consumers. One particular FCL technology that is currently attracting worldwide attention, from both researchers and commercial engineering companies, is the saturated core FCL. This device utilizes the change in permeability between the saturated and unsaturated states of a magnetic core to provide both low steady state losses and effective fault current limiting. Typically the core is saturated using an electromagnetic coil, which can be either superconducting or non-superconducting. Although there have …

We examine the properties of the X-ray gas in the central regions of the distant (z=0.46), X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies surrounding the powerful radio source 3C 295, using observations made with the Chandra Observatory. Between radii of 50 and 500 kpc, the cluster gas is approximately isothermal with an emission-weighted temperature, kT∼5 keV. Within the central 50-kpc radius this value drops to kT∼3.7 keV. The spectral and imaging Chandra data indicate the presence of a cooling flow within the central 50-kpc radius of the cluster, with a mass deposition rate of approximately 280 M⊙ …
