Renewable Energy Management In A Remote Area Using Modified Gravitational Search Algorithm, Sahand Ghavidel, Jamshid Aghaei, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Alireza Heidari

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, a small remote area which is located in Nigeria has been considered as a model to be tested by a managing scheme for providing both electricity and water. In this strategy, the groundwater is pumped into a water tank which can be later used for supplying required irrigation and drinking water. A PAT (Pump as Turbine) is used as a hybrid system for supplying electricity and water as well as storing water in the water tank. Also, a PV (photovoltaic plant), a package of batteries (BAT) in addition to a diesel ICE (internal combustion engine) are used …

Outlier Robust Small-Area Estimation Under Spatial Correlation, Timo Schmid, Nikos Tzavidis, Ralf Munnich, Raymond L. Chambers

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Modern systems of official statistics require the estimation and publication of business statistics for disaggregated domains, for example, industry domains and geographical regions. Outlier robust methods have proven to be useful for small-area estimation. Recently proposed outlier robust model-based small-area methods assume, however, uncorrelated random effects. Spatial dependencies, resulting from similar industry domains or geographic regions, often occur. In this paper, we propose an outlier robust small-area methodology that allows for the presence of spatial correlation in the data. In particular, we present a robust predictive methodology that incorporates the potential spatial impact from other areas (domains) on the small …

Enhanced Frequency Response Strategy For Pmsg Based Wind Energy Conversion System Using Ultracapacitor In Remote Area Power Supply Systems, Yingjie Tan, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The high penetration level of wind energy, and non-responsive nature of power electronic interfaced wind energy conversion system (WECS) during frequency variations may create significant stress on conventional generators in a wind-diesel hybrid remote area power supply (RAPS) system. Hence, it is a necessity for WECS to provide frequency support. However, conventional frequency control strategies being used for WECS may impose a severe stress to wind turbines. In this paper, an enhanced frequency response strategy is proposed for the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based WECS to regulate RAPS system frequency jointly with its integrated ultracapacitors. The proposed frequency response …

Suboptimal Mppt Control For Power Management In Pv-Diesel Remote Area Power Supply Systems, Yingjie Tan, Lasantha G. Meegahapola, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is commonly being used in solar-photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems to maximise solar energy extraction. In this paper it is proposed to operate the solar-PV system at the suboptimal MPPT to manage power balance in a remote area power supply (RAPS) system. This is performed based on three different operating modes: 1) Frequency control mode; 2) Active power control mode; 3) MPPT control mode. The operating modes are decided based on the load level and the operating mode of the diesel generator (i.e. synchronous condenser mode or generator mode). This power management strategy balances the …

Optimal Adaptive Wireless Body Area Networks For High Speed In Health Services, Miftadi Sudjai, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei, Son Lam Phung

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Adaptive ultra-wideband wireless body area networks have been proposed as one of feasible mHealth platforms offering a high-speed, robust mobile health service. The error performance of such sytems outperforms non-adaptive systems by up to 4 dB. To further improve the error performance, the optimization of adaptive parameters is investigated in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed optimal adaptive systems achieves a 2 dB gain with respect to bit error rate (BER). This improvement is equivalent to extra reduction of the power consumption up to 37% in these networks, thus increasing the longevity and reliability of mHealth services.

Outlier Robust Small Area Estimation, Ray Chambers, Hukum Chandra, Nicola Salvati, Nikos Tzavidis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Recently proposed outlier robust small area estimators can be substantially biased when outliers are drawn from a distribution that has a different mean from that of the rest of the survey data. This naturally leads one to consider an outlier robust bias correction for these estimators. We develop this idea, proposing two different analytical mean-squared error estimators for the ensuing bias-corrected outlier robust estimators. Simulations based on realistic outlier-contaminated data show that the bias correction proposed often leads to more efficient estimators. Furthermore, the mean-squared error estimation methods proposed appear to perform well with a variety of outlier robust small …

A Review Of Technical Challenges In Planning And Operation Of Remote Area Power Supply Systems, Yingjie Tan, Lasantha Meegahapola, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Remote area power supply (RAPS) systems are being used for many years to supply power to rural or remote communities where the utility grid is not accessible. In order to avoid the high operating cost and environmental impact caused by conventional generators, renewable energy resources are currently being utilised in RAPS systems. However, the intermittency of such renewable energy resources greatly impacts on planning and operation of RAPS systems. This paper aims to present a comprehensive review with regard to the RAPS system planning and operation techniques published in the literature. This paper summarises different modelling approaches associated with the …

Small Area Estimation In Practice An Applocation To Agricultural Business Survey Data, Nikos Tzavidis, Raymond L. Chambers, Nicola Salvati, Hukum Chandra

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper describes an application of small area estimation (SAbl to agricultural business survey data. Both well known small area estimators, such as the empirical best linear unbiased predictor (EBLUP), and more recently proposed small area estimators, for example, tile M-quanlile, the robust EBLUP aml!he Model Ansed Direct estimators arc considered. Mean squared error estimation is discussed. Using a real agricultural business survey dataset, we place emphasis on model diagnostics for specifying the small area working model, on diagnostic measures for validating the reliability of direct and indirect (modelbased) small area e.~timators i1nd on providing practical guidelines to the prospective …

Large Area Microfabrication Of Electroactive Polymeric Structures Based On Near-Field Electrospinning, R Lameiro, Vitor Sencadas, Senentxu Lanceros-Méndez, J H. Correia, P M. Mendes

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The use of electroactive polymeric materials for sensing and actuating applications is very attractive due to important properties like low operating voltage, low form factor, or high mechanical flexibility. However, its use has been conditioned by the lack of available processing methods for such materials. The deposition of thin layers is very easy by conventional techniques; however obtaining patterned layers is not a trivial task. This paper presents a methodology suitable to fabricate electroactive polymeric microstructures on large area devices. Structures ranging from ∼1, 5 mm to ∼100 μm width, with a thickness of ∼12 μm, were obtained.

Instrumentation For Slope Stability - Experience From An Urban Area, P N. Flentje, R N. Chowdhury Jan 1999

Instrumentation For Slope Stability - Experience From An Urban Area, P N. Flentje, R N. Chowdhury

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper describes the monitoring of several existing landslides in an urban area near Wollongong in the state of New South Wales, Australia. A brief overview of topography and geology is given and reference is made to the types of slope movement, processes and causal factors. Often the slope movements are extremely slow and imperceptible to the eye, and catastrophic failures are quite infrequent. However, cumulative movements at these slower rates do, over time, cause considerable distress to structures and disrupt residential areas and transport routes. Inclinometers and piezometers have been installed at a number of locations and monitoring of …

Quantitative Landslide Hazard Assessment In An Urban Area, Phillip N. Flentje, Robin N. Chowdhury Jan 1999

Quantitative Landslide Hazard Assessment In An Urban Area, Phillip N. Flentje, Robin N. Chowdhury

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Before decisions can be made concerning the management of sloping areas subject to landsliding, systematic approaches for hazard and risk assessment must be developed. This paper is limited to a discussion of hazard assessment and describes quantitative approaches which have been developed for existing landslides. Consideration of areas of potential landsliding is outside the scope of the paper. The approach described here is based on (a) monitoring of subsurface shear movement at instrumented sites and (b) the percentage exceedance time of cumulative rainfalls considering different selected periods of antecedent rainfall. This approach is used in conjunction with a simpler approach, …
