Exploiting The Error Correction Mechanism In Qr Codes For Secret Sharing, Yang-Wai Chow, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, James Phillips, Ilung Pranata, Ari Moesriami Barmawi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper investigates a novel approach to secret sharing using QR codes. The proposed QR code secret sharing approach exploits the error correction mechanism inherent in the QR code structure, to distribute and encode information about a secret message in a number of shares. Each share in the scheme is constructed from a cover QR code, and each share itself is a valid QR code which can be scanned and decoded by a QR code reader. The secret message can be recovered by combining the information contained in the QR code shares. Since each share is a valid QR code, …

Recovery Of Absolute Phases For The Fringe Patterns Of Three Selected Wavelengths With Improved Anti-Error Capability, Jiale Long, Jiangtao Xi, Jianmin Zhang, Ming Zhu, Wengqing Cheng, Zhongwei Li, Yusheng Shi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In a recent published work, we proposed a technique to recover the absolute phase maps of fringe patterns with two selected fringe wavelengths. To achieve higher anti-error capability, the proposed method requires employing the fringe patterns with longer wavelengths; however, longer wavelength may lead to the degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the surface measurement. In this paper, we propose a new approach to unwrap the phase maps from their wrapped versions based on the use of fringes with three different wavelengths which is characterized by improved anti-error capability and SNR. Therefore, while the previous method works on the …

Exact Error Performance Analysis Of Binary Space-Time Block Coded Cooperative Communications Systems In Rayleigh Fading Channels, Le Chung Tran, Zixuan Lin, Farzad Safaei, Alfred Mertins, Duy T. Ngo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Cooperative communications using the Alamouti space-time block code (STBC) has been mentioned intensively. However, to our knowledge, an in-depth error performance analysis for a space-time coded cooperative communications system, where each node acts as both a source node and a relay node for its partner, has not been reported. Intuitively, cooperative communications would not always be better than direct transmission, but only under certain conditions. This paper first derives an exact performance analysis of the Alamouti STBC cooperative communications for a Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) constellation, which could be extended to a higher density modulation scheme. This mathematical analysis …

High Rate Serially Concatenated Codes With Low Error Floors, Bo Liu, Sheng Tong, Qinghua Guo, Jun Tong, Jiangtao Xi, Yanguang Yu

Serial concatenation of Hamming codes and an accumulator has been shown to achieve near capacity performance at high code rates. However, these codes usually exhibit poor error floor performance due to their small minimum distances. To overcome this weakness, we propose to replace the outer Hamming codes by product codes constructed from Hamming codes and single-parity-check codes. In this way, the minimum distance of the outer code can be doubled, which is expected to increase the minimum distance of the serially concatenated code and thus to improve error floor performance. Three-dimensional EXIT chart is used for their convergence analysis and …

Error Exponent Of Amplify And Forward Relay Networks In Presence Of I.I.D. Interferers, Bappi Barua, Farzad Safaei, Mehran Abolhasan Jan 2014

Error Exponent Of Amplify And Forward Relay Networks In Presence Of I.I.D. Interferers, Bappi Barua, Farzad Safaei, Mehran Abolhasan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we derive the random coding error exponent of amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks in presence of arbitrary number of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) interferers both at the relay and the destination. Multiuser networks are common examples of interference limited networks. We derive the ergodic capacity of the network and present simulation results on the performance of the network where we compare the capacity and error exponent performance of interference limited networks with noise limited networks. Numerical results show that noise limited networks outperform interference limited networks even when only a very few interferers exist in the network.

Size And Power Of Cointegration Tests With Non-Normal Garch Error Distributions, Chaiwat Kosapattarapim, Yan-Xia Lin, Michael Mccrae

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Several tests for cointegration among non-stationary financial time series have been developed including the Dicky Fuller (1979) unit root tests, the Cointegration Regression Durbin-Watson test (1983), the Wild Bootstrap test (2003) and the Johansen likelihood ratio tests (1988). The Johensen's tests appeared to provide superior results when the tests were originally applied to situations where the cointegration errors were normally distributed. However, substantial empirical evidences show that financial time series tend to be nonnormal in their distribution which may, in turn, lead to non-normal GARCH type cointegration error distributions. The question addressed in this paper is whether the Johansen's tests …

Impact Of Signaling Schemes On Iterative Linear Minimum-Mean-Square-Error Detection, Li Ping, Jun Tong, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo Jan 2008

Impact Of Signaling Schemes On Iterative Linear Minimum-Mean-Square-Error Detection, Li Ping, Jun Tong, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we study the iterative detection problem for a coded system with multi-ary modulation. We show that, with iterative linear minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) detection, superposition coded modulation (SCM) can provide performance superior to that with other traditional signaling schemes used in trellis coded modulation (TCM) and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). This finding provides a useful guideline for system design considering inter-symbol interference (ISI) and other forms of interference. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the iterative LMMSE detection with different signaling schemes. © 2008 IEEE.

Performance Analysis Of Multi-Ary Systems With Iterative Linear Minimum-Mean-Square-Error Detection, Li Ping, Jun Tong, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper is concerned with coded multi-ary systems over linear channels. Based on a semi-analytical evolution technique, the impact of signaling schemes on the performance of low-cost iterative linear minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) detection is studied. It is shown that superposition coded modulation (SCM) maximizes the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of LMMSE detectors. Consequently, SCM may potentially outperform other conventional signaling schemes when LMMSE detectors are used. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical analysis. © 2008 IEEE.

On The Performance Of Short Forward Error-Correcting Codes, Sheng Tong, Dengsheng Lin, Aleksandar Kavcic, Li Ping, Baoming Bai

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This letter investigates the performance of short forward error-correcting (FEC) codes. Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and concatenated zigzag codes are chosen as representatives of classical algebraic codes and modern simple iteratively decodable codes, respectively. Additionally, random binary linear codes are used as a baseline reference. Our main results (demonstrated by simulations and ensemble distance spectrum analysis) are as follows: 1) Short RS codes are as good as random binary linear codes; 2) Carefully designed short low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are almost as good as random binary linear codes; 3) Low complexity belief propagation decoders incur considerable performance loss at short coding …

On Short Forward Error-Correcting Codes For Wireless Communication Systems, Sheng Tong, Dengsheng Lin, Aleksandar Kavcic, Baoming Bai, Li Ping

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

For real-time wireless communications, short forward error-correcting (FEC) codes are indispensable due to the strict delay requirement. In this paper we study the performance of short FEC codes. Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and concatenated zigzag (CZ) codes are chosen as representatives of classical algebraic codes and modern simple iterative decodable codes, respectively. Additionally, we use random binary linear codes as a baseline reference for comparison. Our main results (demonstrated by both simulation and ensemble distance spectrum analysis) are as follows: 1) Short RS codes are as good as random binary linear codes; 2) Carefully designed short low- density parity-check (LDPC) codes …
