The Ostroms' Commons Revisited, Roger A. Lohmann
The Ostroms' Commons Revisited, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Elinor and Vincent Ostrom spent most of their careers working in fields other than third sector studies. Even so, a significant amount of their work has implications for our field. Together they founded the Workshop on Political Theory and Policy at Indiana University and with students and colleagues built a large body of research and theory on a range of topics including self-governance, collaboration, co-production, polycentrism, federalism, and commons. The Ostroms, the Workshop and their networks of students and colleagues, also constitute an interesting example of one of their latest and most recent contributions, the knowledge commons. Their highly regarded …

Because of the need for science and engineering librarians, both nationwide and at West Virginia University (WVU), a model of Introduction to STEM Disciplines’ Information Use and Mentoring
occurred at WVU. The engineering librarians introduced new resident librarians and a graduate research assistant to the Freshman Engineering program and involved them in teaching several engineering information literacy sessions. The goal of engaging the new librarians into the educational activities was to motivate their learning, gain feedback on current teaching strategies and fresh ideas for possible future implementation, and facilitate buy-in of the need for and role of STEM-specific librarians. The …
Nonprofit Management, Roger A. Lohmann
Nonprofit Management, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Nonprofit management has emerged as an important adjunct and/or subfield of public administration, largely due to the increasing use of contracted services by public agencies. In the course of this development, the meaning of nonprofit for public administration has been transformed. This article was first prepared for a PAR-affiliated website and a somewhat different version was subsequently published as a book chapter in the source cited below.

Client loyalty is crucial to fitness centers. Studies have analyzed the relationship between different subjective variables and consumer behavior intentions in these types of sport services within fitness centers. Nevertheless, few are those who have studied the influence of such variables on objective measures like membership longevity. For this reason, the objective of this study was to examine a loyalty model by means of the relationship between perceived quality, satisfaction, and future intentions with regard to client loyalty. The study counted with 15820 client (8462 women and 7358 men) participants who answered an online questionnaire. A descriptive analysis, factorial confirmatory …

The majority of weight management research is based on data from randomized controlled studies conducted in clinical settings. As these findings are translated into community-based settings, additional research is needed to understand patterns of lifestyle change and dropout. The purpose of this study was to examine reasons for and consequences associated with dropout (or removal) from an insurance-funded weight management program. Using a mixed methods approach with objectively measured changes in body weight and attendance along with quantitative and qualitative survey data, patterns of intention and behavior change were explored. The results from a sample of 400 respondents support the …
Perceptual Integration Of Acoustic Cues To Laryngeal Contrasts In Korean Fricatives, Jonah Katz
Perceptual Integration Of Acoustic Cues To Laryngeal Contrasts In Korean Fricatives, Jonah Katz
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper provides evidence that multiple acoustic cues involving the presence of lowfrequency energy integrate in the perception of Korean coronal fricatives. This finding helps explain a surprising asymmetry between the production and perception of these fricatives found in previous studies: lower F0 onset in the following vowel leads to a response bias for plain [s] over fortis [s*], despite the fact that there is no evidence for a corresponding acoustic asymmetry in the production of [s] and [s*]. A fixed classification task using the Garner paradigm provides evidence that low F0 in a following vowel and the presence of …

Using Roger Matthews’ (2014) book Realist Criminology as a launching pad, this article points to some timely issues that warrant attention from Left Realism. Special attention is devoted to rebuilding the Left realist movement and to some new empirical directions, such as critical studies of policing, adult Internet pornography, and rural women and girls in conflict with the law.
Lenition, Perception, And Neutralisation, Jonah Katz
Lenition, Perception, And Neutralisation, Jonah Katz
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper argues that processes traditionally classified as lenition fall into at least two subsets with distinct phonetic reflexes, formal properties, and characteristic contexts. One type, referred to as loss lenition, frequently neutralises contrasts in positions where they are perceptually indistinct. The second type, referred to as continuity lenition, can target segments in perceptually robust positions, increases the intensity and/or decreases the duration of those segments, and very rarely results in positional neutralisation of contrasts. While loss lenition behaves much like other phonological processes, analysing continuity lenition is difficult or impossible in standard phonological approaches. We develop a phonetically based …
Career Expectancy Of Physicians Active In Patient Care: Evidence From Mississippi, Jamie Boydstun, Jeralynn S. Cossman
Career Expectancy Of Physicians Active In Patient Care: Evidence From Mississippi, Jamie Boydstun, Jeralynn S. Cossman
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Introduction: Physician shortages in the USA, an issue that has been particularly challenging in Mississippi, have been a concern among health scholars and policy makers for several decades. Physician shortages hinder residents from easily obtaining routine care, potentially magnifying health disparities. This study examines physician career life expectancy, or how long physicians typically practice, in Mississippi. Methods: Data on Mississippi’s physician population actively involved between 2007 and 2011 were obtained from the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure. Abridged career life tables were constructed for all Mississippi physicians and population subgroups based on practice specialty, gender, race, urban–rural practice, and …
