Neuro-Informed Music Therapy For The Treatment Of Anxiety And Depression: A Literature Review, Sarah E. Sullivan

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This capstone thesis project is a literature review of research specifically regarding the neuroscience and neurochemistry of music and how it can inform music therapy treatment of mental health. Mental health is a large, overarching term that includes many disorders that refer to one’s psychological and/or emotional condition(s), which further includes an individual’s social well-being. This can include, but is not limited to, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This paper will focus in on a research-based, neuro-informed music therapy treatment of anxiety and depression. The goal of this paper was to provide research toward a future method in …

An Integrated Music Therapy Method For Children And Adolescents With Asd And Trauma, Lillian Gray May 2021

An Integrated Music Therapy Method For Children And Adolescents With Asd And Trauma, Lillian Gray

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis explored the integration of two theories used in music therapy. A literature review of vocal psychotherapy (VPT) and neurologic music therapy (NMT) was conducted. In the literature reviewed, neither theory alone meets the common needs, I have observed, of children and adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a known history of, or current trauma experience. The most significant insight gained from the literature reviewed are the different client needs that each theory approaches. Neurologic music therapy (NMT) techniques are implemented to heal the diseased or injured brain. Vocal psychotherapy intervention can heal the injured soul. The …

Exploring Music, Imagery, And Racial-Ethnic-Cultural Identity With Youth In A Community Music Program: A Community Engagement Project, Anne Case May 2021

Exploring Music, Imagery, And Racial-Ethnic-Cultural Identity With Youth In A Community Music Program: A Community Engagement Project, Anne Case

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The purpose of this community engagement project was to explore the use of music and imagery activities to support the racial-ethnic-cultural identity development of youth in a community music program. Using music, how do youth navigate identity development in their social-political-cultural context? The workshop structure and approaches were grounded in the liberatory approaches of Paulo Freire, with the aim of shifting power dynamics and expanding the critical awareness and consciousness of participants. In an unjust society in which marginalized groups are disproportionally burdened, the exploration and development of racial-ethnic-cultural identity and consciousness are protective factors and should be important topics …

Optimizing Treatment For Preterm Infants Through Music Therapy: A Critical Review Of Literature, Lauren Ciccarelli

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This capstone thesis explores music therapy treatment for preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. The first section outlines developmental considerations and interventions for preterm infants which include minimizing stress, prioritizing sleep, developing feeding behaviors, and promoting strategies for self-regulation of the infant. Both standard care and music therapy interventions are included in this discussion. The second section includes considerations and interventions for attachment and social development. These include skin- to-skin contact between infant and caregiver, the importance of emotional closeness in the infant-caregiver relationship, and supporting parents as they interact with their child in the hospital environment. "It's The Way You Sing It": Translating Music Therapy For Isolated Older Adults Affected By Covid-19 To The Television Screen, Eunice Wong

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The current Covid-19 pandemic has increased the likelihood of loneliness and social isolation among older adults due to the restrictions on movement and visitations in care facilities. Loneliness and social isolation have consistently been identified as risk factors for poor mental and physical health in older people. Meanwhile, a growing number of older adults are utilizing technological resources to enhance their interpersonal relationships and overall quality of life. In the winter of 2020/2021, an innovative music therapy-informed television program was designed and produced for isolated older adults in need of mental and emotional support. This project, produced jointly by a …

How The Expressive Therapies Continuum Informs Intermodal Transfers, Erin M.L. Little May 2021

How The Expressive Therapies Continuum Informs Intermodal Transfers, Erin M.L. Little

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Expressive arts therapy (ExAT) is a therapeutic approach that incorporates visual art, music, drama, and dance/movement into the counseling environment. An essential element in ExAT practice is the intermodal transfer, an intentional shift between arts modalities to enhance clients’ understanding and realization. Currently, no theoretical guidelines for intermodal transfers exist in the field of ExAT. In search of a theoretical structure, the author of this Capstone Thesis proposed that the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) informed intermodal transfers. Predominantly presented as an art therapy approach, the ETC originally intended to include all expressive therapies. Yet, there is minimal recent literature that …

Providing The Opportunity To Access Playfulness In Music Therapy With Adults In A Partial Hospital Program: The Implementation Of A Method, Carolynn Walker

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis explores playfulness in the therapeutic relationship and in music therapy with adults in a partial hospital program. Playfulness is shown to be an effective tool in mental health treatment, aiding in the development of coping skills (Magnuson & Barnett, 2013). A method was applied in order to establish to what extent that playfulness is present and able to be accessed. Five music therapy groups took place with adults age eighteen and older in a partial hospital program that was being conducted in a hybrid (both virtual and in-person) format. Clinical observations concluded that playfulness can be accessed in …

The Effectiveness Of Build-A-Bop As A Tool To Build Self-Efficacy On An Inpatient Unit, Keynessa Nazaire May 2021

The Effectiveness Of Build-A-Bop As A Tool To Build Self-Efficacy On An Inpatient Unit, Keynessa Nazaire

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis explored Build-A-Bop, an original intervention that utilizes elements of drama therapy, music therapy, and Hip-Hop therapy with adults who have been admitted to an adult inpatient short-term unit. Research has shown that hip hop therapy and drama therapy are effective approaches in an adult short-term psychiatric unit (Keisari & Palgi, 2017). This paper presents the foundation for Build-A-Bop and explored its capacity to encourage self-efficacy with adults in an inpatient psychiatric unit. For the purposes of this thesis, Build-A-Bop was broken into four different groups, where each group activity was run by a single drama therapist, who was …
