Exploring The Circle Of Courage Through Art Therapy: A Literature Review, Kendra Denny Arey Sep 2021

Exploring The Circle Of Courage Through Art Therapy: A Literature Review, Kendra Denny Arey

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The Circle of Courage is a framework based on Native principles of childrearing that identifies four major components of healthy human development. When fulfilled, these areas of development provide a strong foundation of resilience to life challenges. However, with youth of today these basic developmental needs are often unmet, leaving them at risk for maladaptive coping strategies, behavioral problems, and other challenges as they transition into adulthood. Although extensive work has been done to adapt the Circle of Courage framework to clinical settings, there is little information on how to help youth engage in a process of self-reflection within this …

Exploring Art Therapy With Clients Suffering From Eating Disorders In An Out-Patient Setting, Miranda Hays May 2021

Exploring Art Therapy With Clients Suffering From Eating Disorders In An Out-Patient Setting, Miranda Hays

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

To date no peer reviewed literature has been published using art therapy for the treatment of clients with eating disorders (EDs) in an outpatient treatment setting. Despite evidence-based treatment methods being used to help treat clients with EDs high rates of morality and relapse persist for clients with EDs (Belak, 2017, p.1). There is a need for creative approaches to ED treatment that can be used to enhance existing evidence-based treatment models. Art Therapy can provide clients with EDs the opportunity to engage in the creative process which allows them to momentarily lessen their defense mechanisms and explore their ED …

Reclaiming Voice Following Sexual Trauma Utilizing Photo Narrative Therapy: A Literature Review, Mikayla G. Crieger May 2021

Reclaiming Voice Following Sexual Trauma Utilizing Photo Narrative Therapy: A Literature Review, Mikayla G. Crieger

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

In this critical literature review, the question of how to reclaim voice and re-empower self following singular or multiple experiences of sexual trauma by means of utilizing photo narrative therapy is explored. Cognitive processing therapy, a general trauma-informed framework, narrative therapy, and a creative arts therapy lens, specifically art therapy, focusing on the use of photography and writing, is used to analyze this topic. Sexual trauma and violence is pervasive, with research often focusing on women and involving traditional methods of psychotherapy as treatment. Photography, phototherapy, and narrative have become emerging interventions that have a place in helping individuals grow …

Mindful Monsters: Development Of A Dbt-Informed Art Therapy Method For Traumatized Children In An Acute Inpatient Residential Program, Chelsea Laforce May 2021

Mindful Monsters: Development Of A Dbt-Informed Art Therapy Method For Traumatized Children In An Acute Inpatient Residential Program, Chelsea Laforce

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

In the treatment of complex childhood trauma, emotion regulation is a foundational component in the healing process. It is accepted in the acute inpatient setting that a highly structured, evidence-based approach targets specific needs of the traumatized child. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a model gaining popularity at the inpatient level of care for this reason. Art therapy has been introduced in adjunct to engage the sensory and developmental needs of the traumatized child in this setting, yet there is a lack of research of the inclusion of DBT-informed art therapy. Some phenomenological research has been conducted on the efficacy …

A Virtual Art Therapy Curriculum For High School Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Informed By Bronfenbrenner’S Ecological Systems Theory, Kendra Soule

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

During the 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic became a global health threat. In order to maintain public safety many schools had to transition onto a virtual space using online programs and classrooms. Not only did schools move to an online platform, but also mental health therapy moved to telehealth platforms to serve those affected by the pandemic. Art therapy is a form of therapy that uses the tangible art making process, art piece, and therapeutic relationship as aspects of therapy. With the move to the virtual setting, art therapists had to modify their work to fit the new setting. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological …

To Love And Be Loved: Art Therapy And Couples With Disabilities, Cailey Bussiere May 2021

To Love And Be Loved: Art Therapy And Couples With Disabilities, Cailey Bussiere

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Couples with intellectual and developmental disability (ID/DD) diagnoses often seek or are in partnerships, but there are, at present, few treatment modalities for working with such individuals. This population faces unique barriers to creating and maintaining partnerships, such as pervasive stigmatization in caretaking systems which they rely on for support, neurological differences, and an increased risk for intimate partner violence (IPV). Art therapy has the potential to be a supportive modality for this population as it moves creative expression beyond words and supports agency and choice. It can create a context in which conflict can be externalized and understood, exploration …

Effectiveness Of Art Therapy With Children With Both Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity And Autism, Elisandra Lopes May 2021

Effectiveness Of Art Therapy With Children With Both Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity And Autism, Elisandra Lopes

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

In this capstone thesis, I review current art therapy research and methods for treating and understanding children with the dual diagnosis of Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These two diagnoses can be complex and can present similar symptoms and may be hard for counselors to identify the actual issue. Focusing on specific symptoms such as lack of social and communication skills and how utilizing art therapy interventions can potentially help reduce those symptoms will be the main focus of this thesis. The population focus is on children in preschool and grade-schooler settings aged 4 to 12. Then I …

The Effectiveness Of Art Therapy As A Treatment Modality In Improving Quality Of Life For Adults With Chronic Pain, Kayley Nelson May 2021

The Effectiveness Of Art Therapy As A Treatment Modality In Improving Quality Of Life For Adults With Chronic Pain, Kayley Nelson

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The efficacy of art therapy is explored in the context of improving the quality of life and mental health of individuals experiencing chronic pain. The exploration and examination of previous research on chronic pain and art therapy have led to various interconnected themes that tie together the needs of this population with the healing aspects of this treatment method. Through gathering data on both the negative impact of chronic pain and the healing aspects of art therapy and exploring research on chronic pain art therapy groups already in action, it can be deduced that future research may further illuminate the …

“Rage Defends Against Overwhelming Loss”: A Literature Review On Women, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, And Anger, Sarah Maeder

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

A literature review examining the difference in anger as a symptom of PTSD based on gender. The focus was on how gender roles and stereotypes impact women’s, as well as providers’, interpretation, expression, acknowledgement, and suppression of anger. By researching civilian survivors of non-combat trauma, the review examined PTSD and symptom discrepancies along a gender divide. Emphasis was placed on the creation of gender as a social construct. Significant nuance was discovered when defining anger, its means of expression, and measurement tools, particularly when interacting with gender. The history of art therapy as a treatment modality for PTSD and anger …

Integration Through Art: Using Art Therapy To Treat Spiritual Emergencies With Psychotic Features, Andrew Golibersuch May 2021

Integration Through Art: Using Art Therapy To Treat Spiritual Emergencies With Psychotic Features, Andrew Golibersuch

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Spiritual emergencies are psychospiritual crises which often induce dramatic shifts in perception, emotional states, cognition, and social functioning. There is a significant lack of awareness of spiritual emergencies in the mental health profession, which contributes to mistreatment of individuals experiencing spiritual emergencies. Many symptoms appear similar to those of psychosis and are frequently misdiagnosed as such. Modern psychiatry aims to suppress and control symptoms of psychosis. This can be damaging to the recovery of someone experiencing a spiritual emergency. Spiritual emergencies are seen as a natural stage of development with immense positive potential for healing and growth. This literature review …

Art Therapy With Children And Adolescents Experiencing Obesity: Embracing An Object Relations Approach, Rohan Roberts Goldman May 2021

Art Therapy With Children And Adolescents Experiencing Obesity: Embracing An Object Relations Approach, Rohan Roberts Goldman

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis looked at how art therapy can help identify problems in attachment between children and adolescents living with obese bodies and their parents. In this literature review, I examined the dynamics of child-parent/caretaker relationships and the way object relations and attachment play a significant role in the child’s mental health development. Incorporating art therapy into the treatment for this population has shown some signs of improving the dynamic between children and their caretaker. Through this research, I concluded that children need a consistent caregiver to be attuned to their needs. If they lack attuned and consistent care, the child …

The Benefits Of Clay For Adolescents In The Inpatient Setting: Development Of A Method, Lauren Sideravage May 2021

The Benefits Of Clay For Adolescents In The Inpatient Setting: Development Of A Method, Lauren Sideravage

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Adolescence is a period of time where there is continuous change in one’s social, emotional, and physical development. In severe situations, these changes could contribute to two of the most common mental disorders in teens, one being mood disorders and the other being anxiety disorders. Arts based interventions were administered to measure and test if using clay through touch and movement could reduce anxiety and stress for adolescents in a psychiatric inpatient setting, leading to greater mental well-being and increased stabilization. Patients participated in a three-part group that focused on different clay techniques, including rolling, flattening, and free choice. Color …

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This literature review explores the history of modern adoption and the effects on the adopted from a developmental, emotional, and behavioral standpoint. The review aims at addressing these specific needs through the use of art therapy. To become better acquainted with the concept, the history of modern adoption, as it pertains to the United States, is summarized with three subcategories as a focus points: domestic, international, and the foster care system. Building off of the history is a reflection on the past research surrounding adoption by considering adverse childhood experiences, complex trauma, attachment, and identity formation as it relates. Art Therapy Provides Relief To New And Expecting Mothers, Dailie Jeffs May 2021

Art Therapy Provides Relief To New And Expecting Mothers, Dailie Jeffs

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Throughout pregnancy, during childbirth, and after childbirth, new and expecting mothers often experience a great amount of anxiety and depressive symptoms that can be classified into three divisions: prenatal anxiety, fear of childbirth, and postpartum depression. Often these symptoms are overlooked and unresolved due to their short time span and being specifically linked to childbirth. However, these symptoms cause a lesser quality of life for the mother that can highly impact the mother and her newborn short-term and long-term. Art therapy techniques, explained by the Expressive Therapy’s Continuum, have proved beneficial in the aid of alleviating depression and anxiety symptoms …

Bringing The Body Into Art Therapy: The Use Of Touch And Body Awareness In Creative Healing, Janna Corsetti May 2021

Bringing The Body Into Art Therapy: The Use Of Touch And Body Awareness In Creative Healing, Janna Corsetti

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The focus on the use of healing touch and body awareness in art therapy is critically lacking. Despite the research supporting the use of body-oriented techniques in clinical therapy, there is little research related to this use specifically in art therapy. Research reveals that healing touch and body awareness can be instrumental in healing trauma, if done with the proper training and boundaries in place. The first form of attachment and comfort for children is that of touch. Therefore, it is imperative to acknowledge the power of touch and body awareness when healing from traumatic experiences. The purpose of this …

Self-Compassion Integrated Art Therapy For Mothers During A Pandemic, Shannon Dover May 2021

Self-Compassion Integrated Art Therapy For Mothers During A Pandemic, Shannon Dover

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis reviews literature related to parental mental health and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). COVID-19 is a collective trauma in which individuals experience the trauma differently depending on race, gender, and class. Women’s experience of living during COVID-19 related to changes in the workplace, caretaking, and more. The pandemic influenced parents and notably mothers with increased stress, depression, grief, and anxiety. The practice of self-compassion reduces shame and self-criticism which are common experiences during parenting and trauma. Self-compassion and art therapy can aid in resiliency and make living during COVID-19 more comfortable. With a literature review, results yield the following …

Exploring Art Therapy Techniques In Parent-Child Dyads With Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Yuval Minz May 2021

Exploring Art Therapy Techniques In Parent-Child Dyads With Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Yuval Minz

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Exposure to trauma during childhood has been shown to have severe long-term consequences. It has been shown that art therapy promotes the reduction of trauma symptoms in children, as it allows them to easily engage in the process of therapy through non-verbal treatment. Involving the caregiver in the treatment process of children was shown to hold significant benefits for children, especially in a setting of parent-child art therapy interventions. In this capstone thesis, I present a case study in which I explored the impact of art therapy interventions performed in a parent-child dyad on the well-being of a child who …

The Experience Of Women On A High-Risk Pregnancy Unit Engaged In Art Therapy, Emili Sherfield May 2021

The Experience Of Women On A High-Risk Pregnancy Unit Engaged In Art Therapy, Emili Sherfield

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Considering the significant changes that occur throughout pregnancy, coping with such changes may be challenging, affecting those experiencing high-risk pregnancies in particular. Women facing high-risk pregnancies often endure heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, ultimately impacting their well-being and mental health. Medical concerns may lead to hospitalization, which has the potential to exacerbate an already distressing situation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. While evaluating beneficial therapeutic interventions to address the needs of this population, art therapy and art-making has proven to reduce anxiety, encourage coping strategies, provide an emotional outlet, and improve overall well-being. In light of these …

Is there room for food as a form of art, and can it be used in an expressive way? This community engagement project focuses on people who would like to share their family recipes, memories, or information about their family’s history and background. This project builds from previous literature and methods that have examined how food plays a role in the following topics: storytelling, memories, expression, and art. This project contributes to previous literature by …

Exploring Tactile Art-Making With Deafblind Students And Their Families: An Opportunity For Creative Play, Alice Rodgers May 2021

Exploring Tactile Art-Making With Deafblind Students And Their Families: An Opportunity For Creative Play, Alice Rodgers

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

The impact of a deafblind diagnosis on an individual’s mental health and the well-being of the family involved can be profound. However, current research and available literature for the mental health treatment and therapy practices of deafblind persons and their families is limited (Kyzar et al., 2016; “WFDB Global Report 2018,” n.d.). This thesis used the Leeds Family Psychology and Therapy Service principles (Leeds FPTS) and the Expressive Therapies Continuum with established deafblind teaching strategies to facilitate an original arts-based community project entitled: “Things We Like.” This project provided an opportunity for deafblind students (ages three to 22) and their …

How The Expressive Therapies Continuum Informs Intermodal Transfers, Erin M.L. Little May 2021

How The Expressive Therapies Continuum Informs Intermodal Transfers, Erin M.L. Little

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Expressive arts therapy (ExAT) is a therapeutic approach that incorporates visual art, music, drama, and dance/movement into the counseling environment. An essential element in ExAT practice is the intermodal transfer, an intentional shift between arts modalities to enhance clients’ understanding and realization. Currently, no theoretical guidelines for intermodal transfers exist in the field of ExAT. In search of a theoretical structure, the author of this Capstone Thesis proposed that the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) informed intermodal transfers. Predominantly presented as an art therapy approach, the ETC originally intended to include all expressive therapies. Yet, there is minimal recent literature that …

Life Narrative Examination Through Art Therapy With Psychotic Disorders, Anna Farrell May 2021

Life Narrative Examination Through Art Therapy With Psychotic Disorders, Anna Farrell

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Though there is some research regarding the use of art therapy with those who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, there is less research on utilizing it with those who have other psychotic disorders or using it with this population within an inpatient setting. Research largely suggests that art therapy is beneficial to this population in reducing and managing negative symptoms, increasing self-awareness, understanding one’s narrative, and as a coping technique. However, there are few specific interventions suggested and researched. Therefore, a directive was developed and utilized in group art therapy on a mood and psychotic disorders inpatient unit. The group …
