Expanding Our Present Knowledge Of The Non-Fictional World: An Analysis Of Transportation And Identification With Victims And Perpetrators, Shantale D. Roberts

This study tests for transportation and identification in non- fiction documentaries that portrayed victims and perpetrators of crime. Participants were a combination of college students and individual who were recruited via social media. The two video conditions demonstrated adult women who were portrayed as either a victim or perpetrator; this is where the manipulation occurred. Participants were randomly selected to view a documentary of a black or white victim, or a black or white perpetrator. Results found that participants were able to be transported into a non- fiction video. Participants also expressed high levels of identification with the women portrayed …

A Qualitative Investigation Into The Active Level Of Perception Of Dissociation Of Source From Content Under Narrative Conditions, William J. Weaver

This thesis explores what media users perceive about the authors and creators of narrative media based solely on the content of that media itself. It contrasts traditional notions of source credibility (established via rhetoric or debate) versus models of media effects which exert themselves through mere exposure to message, and where a direct evaluation of the message source may be neither salient nor possible. A sample of nine undergraduates were individually interviewed in order to investigate the thematic trends associated with the perceptions of credibility and of authorial source while exposed to narrative. Walk With Me: A Telepresence Study Of Mediated Tours, Erika K. Gress

The subsequent study examines variations of self-guided tour mediums in relation to telepresence, transportation, and satisfaction. Three conditions were used to explore the relationships. Those conditions were audio only, audio and visual, and map self-guided tours of a portion of Euclid Avenue adjacent to The audio condition yielded the highest mean scores of the three conditions on all analyses. Condition was found to significantly impact the report of 'worthwhile', a subscale of satisfaction. No other hypotheses resulted in significant findings. As the authors of the Transportation-Imagery Model (Green & Brock, 2000 2002) often state, much attention has been paid to the effects of persuasive communications, frequently at the cost of studying the effects that narratives have on individuals' real-world beliefs.
