Madness, Maleness And Method, Darach Murphy Nov 2011

Madness, Maleness And Method, Darach Murphy

Conference papers

A common perception prevails in contemporary society that men don’t talk. Research such as that entitled ‘Death rather than Disclosure’ even suggests that taking one’s own life is preferred by men, than the disclosing of deep psychological distress. However a number of Men’s Groups in Dublin contradict this common and disturbing perception. These Men’s Groups contain individuals who have been affected by some of the most difficult psychological issues experienced in contemporary society. They come to the Men’s Groups in order to deal with the legacy of these issues and they do this by communicating their own personal experience in …

Social Tourism And Sustainable Policy: A Natural Fit, Or A Forced Relationship?, Kevin Griffin, Jane Stacey

Conference papers

The issue of Social tourism (the title of which is a much contested term) has been on the European agenda for a number of years. In Ireland, while there is a multitude of Social tourism provision there is little or no recognition for it at an official level, with the largest share of provision being at the voluntary / NGO level. At the same time, across Europe a variety of official structures promote 'tourism for all'.

This paper reflects on the various approaches that could be taken to promote Social Tourism and have it recognised as an agenda item for …

Lost In Translation: Interpreting And Presenting Dublin’S Colonial Past, Theresa Ryan, Bernadette Quinn Jul 2011

Lost In Translation: Interpreting And Presenting Dublin’S Colonial Past, Theresa Ryan, Bernadette Quinn

Conference papers

As Alderman (2010: 90) has recently written, the potential struggle to determine what conception of the past will prevail constitutes the politics of memory. This paper aims to investigate the politics of memory at play in determining how Dublin’s colonial heritage is constructed and represented to tourists. Dublin’s profile as a tourism destination has grown recently. It attracted 5.4 million visitors in 2009 (Fáilte Ireland 2010). Culture and heritage underpin both its touristic appeal and the city’s official efforts to represent itself as a destination. Much of Dublin’s most iconic built heritage is strongly associated with its development as a …

Chastising And Romanticising Heavy Metal Subculture: Challenging The Dichotomy With Figurational Sociology, Gary Sinclair Apr 2011

Chastising And Romanticising Heavy Metal Subculture: Challenging The Dichotomy With Figurational Sociology, Gary Sinclair

Conference papers

This research posits that heavy metal music is part of what Elias (2009) refers to as a ‘civilising process’. He argues that as society becomes increasingly integrated we are faced with an increasing web of interdependencies and relationships where a growing intricacy is needed in order to manage ones emotions. Elias and Dunning (2008a) argue that a result of increasing restraints and the routinisation of social relationships sport and leisure has attained a greater importance in society allowing for the generation and release of mimetic emotion. Through participant observation and semi-structured interviews of heavy metal fans in Dublin, Ireland it …

Cultural And Linguistic Capital In Early Years Education And Care, Maire Mhic Mhathuna Jan 2011

Cultural And Linguistic Capital In Early Years Education And Care, Maire Mhic Mhathuna

Conference papers

This paper discusses the concept of cultural and linguistic capital in relation to early years education and care (EECE) in Ireland. Bourdieu describes cultural capital as a form of symbolic capital or non-economic asset. Linguistic capital is a subset of cultural capital and refers to linguistic competence and control of linguistic resources. At a time of great change in ECCE it is appropriate to consider the cultural references on which early childhood education and care in Ireland is premised. What is distinctly Irish about ECEC in Ireland? How do we develop an inclusive viewpoint that values the totality of our …

The Scenario-Oriented Method For Recording And Playing-Back Healthcare Information, Yi Ding, Bing Wu, Erqiang Zhou, Jianfeng Wu Jan 2011

The Scenario-Oriented Method For Recording And Playing-Back Healthcare Information, Yi Ding, Bing Wu, Erqiang Zhou, Jianfeng Wu

Conference papers

This paper proposes a new method, called the scenario-oriented method, to support the idea of recording and replaying the healthcare information such that the reporting and decision-support capabilities can be enhanced. In order to play back the changing history of certain information units, the scenario- oriented method attempts to organize related information and knowledge elements as a context so that the history of real medical activity can be recorded, and then be queried as a continuous, on-the-fly, understandable and playing-back information scenario through replay operations.

Corned Beef: An Enigmatic Irish Dish, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire, Pádraic Óg Gallagher Jan 2011

Corned Beef: An Enigmatic Irish Dish, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire, Pádraic Óg Gallagher

Conference papers

Corned beef and cabbage, which is consumed in America in large quantities each Saint Patrick’s Day (17th March), is considered by most Americans to be the ultimate Irish dish. However, corned beef and cabbage is seldom eaten in modern day Ireland. It is widely reported that Irish immigrants replaced their beloved bacon and cabbage with corned beef and cabbage when they arrived in America, drawing on the corned beef supplied by their neighbouring Jewish butchers, but not all commentators believe this simplistic explanation . This paper will trace the origins and history of corned beef in Irish cuisine and chart …

Obtaining Speech Assets For Judgement Analysis On Low-Pass Filtered Emotional Speech, John Snel, Charlie Cullen Jan 2011

Obtaining Speech Assets For Judgement Analysis On Low-Pass Filtered Emotional Speech, John Snel, Charlie Cullen

Conference papers

Investigating the emotional content in speech from acoustic characteristics requires separating the semantic con- tent from the acoustic channel. For natural emotional speech, a widely used method to separate the two channels is the use of cue masking. Our objective is to investigate the use of cue masking in non-acted emotional speech by analyzing the extent to which filtering impacts the perception of emotional content of the modified speech material. However, obtaining a corpus of emotional speech can be quite difficult whereby verifying the emotional content is an issue thoroughly discussed. Currently, speech research is showing a tendency toward constructing …
