An Exploration Of Aggregated Patterns Of Student Curriculum-Based-Measurement Outcome Data Within A Response To Intervention Program, Elizabeth Findlay May 2012

An Exploration Of Aggregated Patterns Of Student Curriculum-Based-Measurement Outcome Data Within A Response To Intervention Program, Elizabeth Findlay

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Identifying and determining what a student needs in order to progress and succeed in school is an important aspect of education. One proposed model for doing so is called response to intervention (RTI). This model states that the degree to which a student does or does not respond to high-quality interventions can help predict future performance and provide needed insight into what skills a student does and does not have. A student receives more or less services based on his or her level of responding interventions provided. The standard RTI model indicates that 80% of a student population should respond …

Father Book Reading Behaviors And Pre-Kindergarten Emergent Literacy, Cherri H. Brooks May 2005

Father Book Reading Behaviors And Pre-Kindergarten Emergent Literacy, Cherri H. Brooks

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Conventional literacy is important for academic and life success. Emergent literacy is a precursor to conventional literacy, and parent-child book reading experiences can foster emergent literacy development. Fathers are important figures in children's development and may make important contributions to their emergent literacy development.

This study observed 179 fathers from families who participated in research evaluating the Bear River Early Head Start program. Father-child book reading was videotaped as part of a 10-minute observation session in each child 's home at 14 months, 24 months, 36 months, and pre- kindergarten (age 4 or 5). Book reading observation sessions were coded …

Language, Social Interactions, And Attention As Predictors Of Reading Development In Second Grade, Lisa A. Newland May 2001

Language, Social Interactions, And Attention As Predictors Of Reading Development In Second Grade, Lisa A. Newland

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Social interactions between 153 mother-infant dyads in the laboratory were examined for associations with language and play preferences when infants were 14 months old. Later associations with reading skills, attention, and book reading were examined at the end of second grade. Mothers and infants were videotaped in a 20-minute laboratory observation at 14 months, and joint visual attention and social toy play were coded from the interactions. Language was assessed at 14 months using a standardized instrument, and mothers rated their own and their infants' preferences for specific types of play. A follow-up study, conducted at the end of second …

Reading Abilities Of Third Grade Children As Influenced By Kindergarten Instruction, Diane Thomas May 1975

Reading Abilities Of Third Grade Children As Influenced By Kindergarten Instruction, Diane Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Literature indicates that in past years a controversy has arisen as to the proper time and methods to begin the instruction of reading to young children. Most recent research indicates that authorities do not advocate formalized instruction by which whole classes or groups of children participate in a given program. However, recent literature also indicates a trend toward structured and formalized reading by public school teaching staff.

While there is a great deal of research in the area of early reading, the research is not definitive. Consequently, a need remains for definitive research that can help in answering questions about …

Complexive Ordering Of Reading Experience Through Grapheme-Phoneme Relative Frequency Control, Wesley K. Roberts May 1973

Complexive Ordering Of Reading Experience Through Grapheme-Phoneme Relative Frequency Control, Wesley K. Roberts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation develops a word bank based on a series of well defined filters. The basis of this system is grapheme-phoneme relative frequency control. The word bank is designed to be used in developing reading materials at varied degrees of difficulty.

Four short stories were edited as to their grapheme-phoneme relationships. Reading speed and reading comprehension were measured for each student on these stories. All students read a story in the original form and a story in the filtered version.

No difference in reading comprehension were found, but reading speed was significantly higher on three of four stories.

The Use Of A Phonetic Approach To Reading With Three And Four-Year-Old Children, F. Walda Hopkins May 1971

The Use Of A Phonetic Approach To Reading With Three And Four-Year-Old Children, F. Walda Hopkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper is to determine if girls of preschool ages find more success in learning letters of the alphabet, their sounds, and simple two and three letter words formed from these letters, than boys of similar ages; and in addition to compare the achievement of three-year-old children to that of four-year-old children.

The children were introduced to six letters of the alphabet and the sound associated with these letters. They were then introduced to sixteen two and three-letter words that could be formed from these letters. At the conclusion of the ten tasks, a post test was …
