Algorithms For Adapting Materialised Views In Data Warehouses, Mukesh Mohania, Guozhu Dong Dec 1996

Algorithms For Adapting Materialised Views In Data Warehouses, Mukesh Mohania, Guozhu Dong

Kno.e.sis Publications

In this paper we consider the problem of materialised view adaptation in data warehouses. Materialised views are important in data warehousing where they are used to speed up query processing on large amounts of data. User requirements change over time, which may change the definitions of views dynamically. For such situations, the question arises whether the materialised views should be recomputed from scratch for every change in the definition or they should be obtained by adapting old materialised views. Changes to a view definition may be expensive, if the view is recomputed from scratch. Therefore, it is worthwhile to examine …

Perception And Control Of Locomotion, John M. Flach Oct 1996

Perception And Control Of Locomotion, John M. Flach

Psychology Faculty Publications

Over the past four years we have been studying problems of control and coordination with funds from AFOSR. Work over the first three years has been reviewed in the final report for the original AFOSR award (Flach, 1996). This report reviews work for the last year of the ASSERT grant. This work has focused on perception and control of low altitude flight. Experimental work from two synthetic task environments is described in this report. The first environment involved descent to low altitude. The key independent variables were speed of forward motion and optical texture (dot, grid, splay, depression). Results showed …

On The Portability Of Behavioral Vhdl-93, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Robert Ewing Oct 1996

On The Portability Of Behavioral Vhdl-93, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Robert Ewing

Kno.e.sis Publications

Goossens defined a structural operational semantics for a subset of VHDL-87 and proved that the parallelism present in VHDL is benign. We extend this work to include shared variables in VHDL-93 that changes the underlying semantic model. In the presence of shared variables, non-deterministic execution of VHDL-93 processes destroys the unique meaning property. We identify and characterize a class of portable VHDL-93 descriptions for which unique meaning property can be salvaged.

Managing Multiple Information Sources Through Ontologies: Relationship Between Vocabulary Heterogeneity And Loss Of Information, Eduardo Mena, Vipul Kashyap, Arantza Illarramendi, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The ability to deal with a huge number of independent and heterogeneous repositories is the most critical problem in Global Information Systems. One approach to enable efficient query processing is by utilizing semantic descriptions (organized as ontologies) of such repositories whenever available.

In this context semantic relationships among ontologies can be used Query Processors. Three kind of relationships are considered: synonyms and hypernyms. Using synonyms the semantic of the query is preserved; however, when synonyms are not available and hypernyms or hyponyms are used there exists some loss of information that must be measured.

Observer: An Approach For Query Processing In Global Information Systems Based On Interoperation Across Pre-Existing Ontologies, Eduardo Mena, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth, Arantza Illarramendi Jun 1996

Observer: An Approach For Query Processing In Global Information Systems Based On Interoperation Across Pre-Existing Ontologies, Eduardo Mena, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth, Arantza Illarramendi

Kno.e.sis Publications

The huge number of autonomous and heterogeneous data repositories accessible on the “global information infrastructure” makes it impossible for users to be aware of the locations structure/organization, query languages and semantics of the data in various repositories. There is a critical need to complement current browsing, navigational and information retrieval techniques with a strategy that focuses on information content and semantics. In any strategy that focuses on information content, the most critical problem is that of different vocabularies used to describe similar information across domains. We discuss a scalable approach for vocabulary sharing. The objects in the repositories are represented …

Proof Strategies For Hardware Verification, Robert Eastham, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan May 1996

Proof Strategies For Hardware Verification, Robert Eastham, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

Ascertaining correctness of digital hardware designs through simulation does not scale-up for large designs because of the sheer combinatorics of the problem. Formal verification of hardware designs holds promise because its computational complexity is of the order of number of different types of components (and not number of components in the design). This approach requires the specification of the behavior and the design in a formal language, and reason with them using a theorem prover. In this paper we attempt to develop a methodology for writing and using these specifications for some important classes of hardware circuits. We examine digital …

Saying What We Will Do, And Doing What We Say: Implementing A Customer Service Plan, Susan Wehmeyer, Dorothy Auchter, Arnold Hirshon

University Libraries' Staff Publications

The corporate literature on customer service has much to offer academic libraries. A customer service plan can improve customer relations, improve internal operations, and empower the front line staff to meet customer needs. This article explores the practical aspects of the development of a service pledge at the Wright State University Libraries.

Manufacturing's Role In The Growth Of An Industrialized Mature Economy, James F. Gill Jan 1996

Manufacturing's Role In The Growth Of An Industrialized Mature Economy, James F. Gill

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Manufacturing is the primary driver of major wealth formation and competitiveness in every significant economy. Therefore, it would appear that the more dominant role in manufacturing plays in overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the greater is the annual comparative growth rate of the economy. Manufacturing is 19 percent of GDP for the United States, 30 percent for Japan, 31 percent for Korea, and 35 percent for Germany, as of 1987.

The term "manufacturing" as used here does not include construction, mining, forestry, fishing and other similar activities. There are two general definitions (See footnote, OECD/2/World Bank. U.N. SNA).

This paper …

Economic Growth Performance Of Selected Countries, Wuguang Yan Jan 1996

Economic Growth Performance Of Selected Countries, Wuguang Yan

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper reviews economic growth theories and studies the East - Asian economic growth characteristics. The descriptive analysis shows that the high performance Asian Economies(the HPAEs) have been experiencing continued rapid per capita income growth for over two decades. They have enjoyed the high savings rates, high investment rates, low population growth rates as well. The living standard of these countries tends more and more closer to the U.S. standard. Compare to the Latin American countries, the HPAEs’ achievement is very impressive.

The statistical analysis performed in this paper also offers the insights of the relationship between per capita GDP …

Interest Rate Elasticity And Consumer Bank Accounts: A Case Analysis Of Bank One Dayton, N.A., William Paul Martin Jan 1996

Interest Rate Elasticity And Consumer Bank Accounts: A Case Analysis Of Bank One Dayton, N.A., William Paul Martin

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This study is an econometric analysis of three consumer banking accounts from Bank One Dayton, N.A., the Total Demand account, Total Savings account and Time Deposits Account. The elasticity of demand with respect to interest rates of the savings and time deposit accounts is determined using multiple regression modeling and analysis. Other variables that are significant determinants of the balances of each account are also presented.

An analysis of the regression results for the Time Deposits Model indicates that the demand for the Bank One Dayton time deposit accounts (certificate of deposit accounts) is significantly elastic with respect to interest …

Telecommunications And Economic Development, Mohammed Mahbubur Rahman Jan 1996

Telecommunications And Economic Development, Mohammed Mahbubur Rahman

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The thesis examines the relationship between telecommunications development and economic activity of nations. The findings confirm the previously established hypothesis that the causality of the relationship between these two factors exists in both directions. That is the development of economic activity at any point in time influences the development in telecommunications at a later point in time- and the development in telecommunications at any point in time also influences the economic activity at a later point in time. The major economic principle behind such significant correlation of telecommunications and economic development is that telecommunications helps reduce the transaction cost in …

This study was conducted to determine the economic implications of the proposed merger between the Village of Clayton and unincorporated Randolph Township, as well as critique the plan laid out by the Merger Commission. The focus of the study was to compare the expenditures of ten area cities with the proposed expenditures of the Merger Commission as described in their May 7 Preliminary Report. In addition, economic trends in the area were examined to fully gauge the impact of the merger on the Northmont area.

It is clear from this study that the proposed budget of the new city will …

Estimates Of The Natural Rate Of Unemployment Based On Married Males And Married Females, Pamela Bowers Jan 1996

Estimates Of The Natural Rate Of Unemployment Based On Married Males And Married Females, Pamela Bowers

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The natural rate of unemployment is always estimated using rates of unemployment for married males, yet no substantiated criteria exists for this choice. This study compares estimates of the natural rate of unemployment based on the unemployment rates of married males and married females, which are used in estimating the Phillips curve. The results shows that the two series exhibit similar trends over the study period, but the female-based series is lower. This implies that the natural rate is not independent of the demographic group chosen to estimate it. The basis for the study is a 1993 article by Stuart …

Innovation In A Production Function By Combining Theory Of Constraints And Kanban Scheduling Techniques, David Charles Maley Jan 1996

Innovation In A Production Function By Combining Theory Of Constraints And Kanban Scheduling Techniques, David Charles Maley

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The following documents how I have been working to make agile manufacturing a reality at Whirlpool Corporation, the largest producer of home appliances in the world. Together with a Dayton, Ohio design team, I designed a quick response production process for a new range manufacturing plant. Several innovations made possible a significant improvement in manufacturing flexibility and order response time which will give the firm a competitive advantage in the market, leading to increased profits. The facility was constructed in Tulsa, Oklahoma and is now in production.

Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt's Theory of Constraints served as the foundation of the production …

Semantic And Schematic Similarities Between Database Objects: A Context-Based Approach, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth Jan 1996

Semantic And Schematic Similarities Between Database Objects: A Context-Based Approach, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

In a multidatabase system, schematic conflicts between two objects are usually of interest only when the objects have some semantic similarity. We use the concept of semantic proximity, which is essentially an abstraction/mapping between the domains of the two objects associated with the context of comparison. An explicit though partial context representation is proposed and the specificity relationship between contexts is defined. The contexts are organized as a meet semi-lattice and associated operations like the greatest lower bound are defined. The context of comparison and the type of abstractions used to relate the two objects form the basis of a …
