Pooled DNA samples have been used in association studies of Mendelian disease genes. This method involves combining equal quantities of DNA from patients and control subjects into separate pools and comparing the pools for distributions of genetic markers. In this study identical quantities of DNA from 300 individuals representing 6 populations were pooled and amplified for 296 loci using the touchdown polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. The purpose of this study is to test the efficacy of pooled DNA markers in the reconstruction of the genetic structure of human populations. The populations sampled included Chuvash, Buryats, Kizhi, Native Americans, South …

I'm a lists person. I get a strange delight from checking little Nike signs on my daily list of "Things to do."
This issue's stories of triumph, surrender and hope inspired me to create an ongoing list — a list of things to do before I die. Learning 12 languages, solving local hunger and playing the mandolin, while extra ordinary, don't occupy a spot on the list. Other topics, however, such as mystery, money, romance and religion, definitely beg a place.
My list will surely grow just as Klipsun's repertoire will. But when my time is up, those little tingles …

Koreikyo, or Seniors Co-operative, is a hybrid consumer and worker co-operative of, by, and for seniors. Its mission is to help seniors remain in their homes as long as possible. The co-op gets frail seniors the help they need to stay independent and helps able seniors—who often face age discrimination—find work that pays, keeps them active, and adds meaning to their lives. Members can both provide services and receive them.

Documents And Archives In Early America, Randall C. Jimerson Western Washington University
Documents And Archives In Early America, Randall C. Jimerson Western Washington University

Concern for documents and archival records in America began with religious motives and concern for colonists' rights. By the late 18th century historians increasingly relied on original documents to establish facts and "objective" truth. Beginning with the Revolution historical documents served patriotic and nationalistic purposes, such as veneration of heroes. Efforts to preserve irreplaceable documents resulted in two separate but closely linked traditions-"multiplying the copies" through documentary editing and publication, and establishing repositories to protect original documents. This marked the beginning of archival consciousness in America, led by private historical societies. Archives served the needs of the social elite and …

Autumn is the season of transition at Western. A new academic year embarks, and the accompanying anxiety and excitement consumes university life.
New students curiously walk the campus, helping each other navigate the unfamiliar environment. Old friends meet and catch up on the events of summer. Days become shorter, and the colors of Bellingham change.
Klipsun is also in transition. The magazines format has changed to embody shorter features and increased visual content. Inside this issue, readers will discover a great range of transitions that Western students and members of the greater Western community experience.

Income Distribution And Economic Growth, Mike Freimuth
Income Distribution And Economic Growth, Mike Freimuth
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
It is known that redistributing wealth from the rich to the poor tends to increase consumption in an economy. This is because when people’s incomes are lower they typically spend a larger percent of that income. This increase in consumption, however, must be accompanied by an equivalent decrease in savings, if savings equals investment. And if investment is the mechanism by which an economy grows, this must therefore have an effect on the growth of that economy. This paper deals strictly with the effects on long-term economic growth brought about by a change in income distribution. The purpose of this …

The Archival ‘Radar Screen’: Strategic Issues Identified By Saa Council, Randall C. Jimerson Western Washington University

What’s on SAA’s “radar screen”? In February 2005, Council members identified about a dozen threats and challenges that are of critical concern to the archival profession. In order to be considered as a “strategic issue,” each had to pass muster as having “greatest impact on the association’s membership” and being “within the association’s capacity to act upon effectively.” Each issue statement was “reduced to single-sentence statements that define an arc of tension between two variables.”

Klipsun celebrates lifestyles, art and entertainment by telling a variety of stories about people residing in, or connected to, the Pacific Northwest.
My editorial staff and I have evaluated how these stories can be presented more effectively. The result is a reformatted magazine, which includes more art and shorter stories.
The content of this issue includes hiking, body building, last I wishes and rap music — assorted topics that individually delve into a slice of life.
I recommend reading Jamie Trudel's “Two Men and a Baby” to our readers intrigued by gay rights. Photography enthusiasts should look at Matt Anderson’s …

Saying goodbye? Not always.
Sometimes it’s hard to bid farewell when we depart from a person, an era or Ideology, but people find comfort in the possibility of returning again and recapturing what once was.
Because this notion is so prevalent in modern lifestyles, the Klipsun staff decided to make a tribute to all things old and explore symptoms of nostalgia that surround us today.

Juggling is an art. Whether it is juggling school and grueling nightshift labor, balancing spirituality and faith with the demands of a material world or the actual craft of juggling, this skill seems to appear as a resurfacing theme in this issue of Klipsun.
Traditionally, the first issue of the quarter is non-themed and contains a variety of stories. This issue appears more as a mosaic than miscellany. Individual snapshots converge to form the greater picture: our world and lives are in a state of continual tension between two effects, ideas or paths.
In the midst of our juggling act, …

When we selected this issue’s theme in November, the topics on all our minds were the election and ensuing political issues. We found ourselves so passionately talking about certain topics that we felt we had no other choice than to publish these controversial topics in Klipsun. Some people on the Klipsun staff expressed concerns about publishing a political issue so long after the election. We decided, however, that just because the election was over didn’t mean we had forgotten the issues.
Politics are personal. They affect our everyday lives, from paying taxes to checking out library books, and they affect …

When my mother moved to a retirement home a few years ago I helped her decide what to save among the 17 cartons of family papers stored in the attic. It was the first time that she could clearly understand my professional expertise. She began telling her friends that every family should have an archivist. For me this story shows the importance of being able to explain the roles of archivists and the value of archives in society.

I have personal ties to recent advocacy issues. Funding for my first job as an archivist came from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). The person who hired me, Dr. Robert M. Warner, was later appointed Archivist of the United States. When I assumed my first management position, I turned to NHPRC for grant funds to develop a records management and archives program. My predecessor in my current position was former Archivist of the U.S. Dr. James B. Rhoads.

One of my favorite Mark Twain quotes is: “Everyone complains about the weather, but no one does anything about it.” The same might be said for the challenges that the archival profession faces. We are buffeted by the storms of limited resources, inadequate staffing, public misunderstanding, and administrative neglect. Our contributions to society and to our own institutions are often unrecognized or unappreciated, and yet we are expected to perform miracles for researchers and administrators in locating information and records at a moment’s notice.

This past summer, as a participant in the International Student Volunteers program, I had the opportunity to travel across the Pacific and to work with an Australian environmental organization in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. My unforgettable experience allowed me to make a lasting contribution to the local environment as well as to take part in a number of very memorable activities—scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, gliding through the canopy of North Queensland’s tropical rainforests, flying in a small plane over the largest sand island in the world, and seeing the national capital and Parliament of …

I knew that Uriah Parmelee had died long ago, but reading the report of his death still made me slump back in my chair. For two days in the spring of 1975 I had been sitting in the reference room at the Duke University Manuscripts Department, reading his Civil War letters. From Parmelee’s enthusiasm as an 1861 Union volunteer, to his disgust with Lincoln’s slowness to embrace emancipation as a war measure, I had followed his military career and political awakening. I admired his commitment to ending slavery and had begun to think of him as a kindred soul. When …
