Self-Publishing: A New Challenge For Universal Bibliographic Control, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

Self-publishing in the United States has increased to between 50-75% of book titles published annually, facilitated by the popularity of ebooks and print-on-demand. Today, UBC is much different in the age of information overload compared with the relative information scarcity before the arrival of the Internet. Libraries have nonetheless retained an interest in bibliographically controlling traditional books. Self-published books can be indistinguishable from trade publications but fall outside many of …

This study presents the results of an analysis of the offers by out-of-print dealers to buy and to sell items in AB Bookman’s Weekly during two periods (1982 and 1992) compared with availability and prices in 2004 in Used.addall.com, a metasearch site for out-of-print materials. Digital Infrastructure Development Within A Nonprofit Polymer Science Library: An Analysis Of The Transition To Digital Serials At The Michigan Molecular Institute, Natalie A. Tucker, Robert P. Holley May 2004

Digital Infrastructure Development Within A Nonprofit Polymer Science Library: An Analysis Of The Transition To Digital Serials At The Michigan Molecular Institute, Natalie A. Tucker, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

The authors analyze the issues that the Michigan Molecular Institute Library (MMI) will face in making the transition to digital serials. Supporting a specialized research institute, the library has a limited number of serial subscriptions (68) from a large number of publishers (42). Furthermore, its specialized nature limits the number of potential consortia partners. Strengths include a user community of skilled researchers in a well-defined research area. In making the transition, MMI will encounter both similar and different issues than those found in larger academic and research libraries. Topics covered include current access, planning, licensing, archival concerns, interlibrary loan, interoperability, …
