Salvaging Print: Letterhead In Post-Industrial Urban America, Nancy Sharon Collins

The Mid-America Print Council Conference

This panel will explore the link between today’s small press movement and the formal aspects of commercial printing during the American 20th century. Panelists include Christine Medley , Philip Gattuso, and Nancy Bernardo.

Using as its primary example letterhead from defunct companies in Detroit, and secondarily, specimens of business and legal letterhead from other urban centers of the industrial United States, this panel will examine and discuss: What did letterhead represent to 20th century printers in local markets such as Detroit? What is the significance of printed letterhead, and stationery, to the art of small press printing in post-industrial cities …

Self-Publishing: A New Challenge For Universal Bibliographic Control, Robert P. Holley May 2014

Self-Publishing: A New Challenge For Universal Bibliographic Control, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

Self-publishing in the United States has increased to between 50-75% of book titles published annually, facilitated by the popularity of ebooks and print-on-demand. Amazon.com and other companies have encouraged the trend by paying royalties and providing support to authors. This increase in self-published materials poses a new challenge for Universal Bibliographic Control (UBC). Today, UBC is much different in the age of information overload compared with the relative information scarcity before the arrival of the Internet. Libraries have nonetheless retained an interest in bibliographically controlling traditional books. Self-published books can be indistinguishable from trade publications but fall outside many of …

An Examination Of Ethical Standards And Behaviors In Transportation Brokerage, John Drea, James T. Kenny Apr 2014

An Examination Of Ethical Standards And Behaviors In Transportation Brokerage, John Drea, James T. Kenny

Journal of Transportation Management

The manuscript examines individual ethical decision making for common scenarios faced by transportation brokers, including unauthorized double brokering, booking and bouncing, and a failure to disclose all terms to a shipper. The results indicate significant discrepancies between what actions a broker would engage, what brokers perceive that others in the same industry would do, and what industry leaders perceive to be ethical.

Unintended Consequences: Lessons Learned When Starting A Logistics & Transportation Doctoral Program, Stephen M. Rutner, C. David Shephard, Paige S. Rutner Apr 2014

Unintended Consequences: Lessons Learned When Starting A Logistics & Transportation Doctoral Program, Stephen M. Rutner, C. David Shephard, Paige S. Rutner

Journal of Transportation Management

Many universities evaluate the costs and benefits of academic programs. An important decision is whether to offer a doctoral degree. Most articles and academics focus on the numerous benefits of a doctoral program. While many of the benefits that can stem from a doctoral program are summarized in this manuscript, the primary purpose is to highlight some of the hidden costs to creating and operating a doctoral program. The authors use their experience in developing a doctoral program in Logistics and Transportation to illustrate many of these potentially hidden costs. This should provide academics and administrators with better information to …

The 6th Mode Of Transportation, Robert O. Walton Apr 2014

The 6th Mode Of Transportation, Robert O. Walton

Journal of Transportation Management

The five modes of freight transportation are normally characterized as motor carriers, railroads, airlines, water carriers, and pipelines. This paper will attempt to position the Internet as the sixth mode of transportation. This paper compares the strengths and weaknesses of the traditional five modes of transportation against the proposed 6th mode of the Internet. Without including the Internet as a mode of transportation, and tracking the economic value that it adds to the economy, the economic impact of the Internet as a mode is not considered. The recommendation of this study is that the Internet should be added to the …

Distortions In The Measurement Of The Efficiency Of Financial Leverage Strategies In The Airline Industry When Operating Leases Are Ignored, Carl A. Sheraga, Paul Caster Apr 2014

Distortions In The Measurement Of The Efficiency Of Financial Leverage Strategies In The Airline Industry When Operating Leases Are Ignored, Carl A. Sheraga, Paul Caster

Journal of Transportation Management

The Financial Accounting Standards Board and the International Accounting Standards Board have set forth a proposal requiring companies to capitalize operating leases and include them as assets and liabilities on their balance sheets. The proposal is motivated by the fact that current methods accounting for operating leases hide a great deal of off-book leverage and thus are misleading to investors. Such a change would have a significant impact on the U.S. airline industry where aircraft and property operating leases are quite prevalent. This study utilizes an in-depth strategic management perspective in examining how well U.S. airlines pursue optimization strategies with …

Hiring And Training Work-Study Students: A Case Study, Laura Manley, Robert P. Holley Feb 2014

Hiring And Training Work-Study Students: A Case Study, Laura Manley, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This paper describes the implementation of a comprehensive hiring and training program for library work-study students designed to reduce the time spent on individual training. After staff reductions, Marygrove College Library in Detroit, Michigan turned to an underutilized resource--work-study students. Formerly, training these students took so much permanent staff time that the library questioned investing so much effort on a contingent work force. With the cuts, the library reconsidered the value of work-study employees and devised a hiring and training program to choose the best candidates for the position and to reduce the effort full-time staff spent training new workers.

Refining Shippers’ Dyadic Cost, Risk, And Delivery Responsibilities: The Principal Changes To Incoterms And A Transaction Cost Focus For The Future, Drew M. Stapleton, Vivek Pande, Soumen Ghosh, Uzay Damali Jan 2014

Refining Shippers’ Dyadic Cost, Risk, And Delivery Responsibilities: The Principal Changes To Incoterms And A Transaction Cost Focus For The Future, Drew M. Stapleton, Vivek Pande, Soumen Ghosh, Uzay Damali

Journal of Transportation Management

We first explore the changes in the latest version of Incoterms and explain why and how they have been refined to better capture contemporary global and domestic shipping practices and policies. Next we graphically explain each of the eleven INCOTERMS 2010 and specify exact delivery points, those critical points at which cost and risk responsibilities shift from the Seller to the Buyer. We then provide a discussion to better explain the application of the terms from a practitioner’s view and note that many shippers and freight forwarders still revert to long practiced shipping policies, leaving themselves vulnerable. We close by …

The Long-Term Impact Of Rail Abandonment On Manufacturing In Arkansas, John D. Ozment, Ahren Johnston Jan 2014

The Long-Term Impact Of Rail Abandonment On Manufacturing In Arkansas, John D. Ozment, Ahren Johnston

Journal of Transportation Management

Despite the fact that railroads are an important part of the U.S. economy, the number of rail carriers and miles of rail lines have been declining. The resulting lack of transportation alternatives could have a negative impact on local manufacturing. This study examined the effects of rail abandonment in Arkansas between 1980 and 2000 by comparing measures related to manufacturing in counties that did not have or had lost some rail service with those in counties that had rail service and had not lost any. The analysis revealed no meaningful differences, suggesting the lack of any adverse economic impacts due …

The Role Of Logistics Alliance Orientation On Forming The Alliance Structure: A Conceptual Framework, David M. Gligor, Mary C. Holcomb Jan 2014

The Role Of Logistics Alliance Orientation On Forming The Alliance Structure: A Conceptual Framework, David M. Gligor, Mary C. Holcomb

Journal of Transportation Management

Little is known about how a firm decides what type of relationship to develop with a LSP and how the type of arrangement affects the service quality performance. This article proposes a conceptual framework to better understand how shippers decide what type of relationship to develop with a logistics service provider (LSP) within the strategy- structure-performance theoretical framework. A systematic literature review is used to develop a conceptual framework that considers the association between the firm’s strategic perspective on outsourcing and the resulting effect on the alliance structure. The concept of a logistics alliance orientation (LAO) is introduced to examine …

Key Advertising Components And Media Channels For Recruiting Long Haul Drivers, Marla B. Royne, Carol C. Beinstock, Tracy Anna Cosenza Jan 2014

Key Advertising Components And Media Channels For Recruiting Long Haul Drivers, Marla B. Royne, Carol C. Beinstock, Tracy Anna Cosenza

Journal of Transportation Management

This research examines how trucking companies can develop effective advertising media and messages for reaching and recruiting qualified long distance long distance truck drivers. Long distance truck driver candidates seem most interested in competitive pay, paid vacation, a weekly payment schedule (along with direct deposit), assigned equipment, 24/7 dispatch, a large volume of hub group freight, and flexible home time. To reach this audience and its needs, we suggest advertisements emphasizing these benefits be placed on the Internet and social media sites, as well as in selected professional magazines frequented by truck drivers searching for jobs.

Elections And Asset Pricing: The Politically Sensitive Equity Of Us Military Contractors, Matthew Mark Ross Jan 2014

Elections And Asset Pricing: The Politically Sensitive Equity Of Us Military Contractors, Matthew Mark Ross

Wayne State University Dissertations

I quantify the relationship between political uncertainty and equity volatility in the months around US elections from 1989-2012. The Economic Policy Uncertainty Index and Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) data are employed to measure political uncertainty faced by military contractors, capitalizing on the unique monopsony-oligopoly business environment of these firms. I employ a GARCH (1,1) model with cross-sectionally correlated moments to produce daily firm-election volatility measures. Volatility increases 11% for local, 27% for midterm, and 43% for presidential elections. These measures demonstrate that all election categories: local, federal, presidential, and midterm exhibit differential effects on equity volatility. My results …

Because the Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which requires students to perform at predefined proficiency levels on state standardized testing instruments, adequate school funding has become arguably the single most important factor influencing the success of children in schools. Because State legislators are the one's primarily responsible for establishing annual budgets for K-12 public education, it is essential they are made aware …
