Influence Of Military Culture On Resilience In Survivors Of Military Sexual Trauma, Rebeka Athena Ives

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Military sexual trauma (MST) is a phenomenon that is in the spotlight currently. More and more service members are coming forward to report their MST stories. Experts have found that MST survivors endure numerous psychological, physical, emotional, and career challenges. Their symptoms have been found to be more severe than those of other types of combat-related trauma, and many end up taking their own lives due to the severity of their symptoms. Therefore, in this qualitative, narrative inquiry I sought to understand how 8 survivors of forced labor trafficking, ages 25 years and older, described their health following trafficking beyond 5 years. The theory of social constructionism constituted the theoretical foundation, and the salutogenic …

Experiences Of Parenting For African American Female Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Chelsea Sharpe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been linked to a number of adverse effects in adulthood including higher levels of depression, shame, guilt, self-blame, somatic concerns, anxiety, dissociation, repression, denial, relationship problems, and sexual problems. Little is known, however, about the influence CSA has on parenting, specifically among African American mothers, as previous researchers have primarily focused on the trauma experienced by survivors. Examining the impact of CSA on African American mothers' parenting is important as those children of survivors will often also experience the impact of the long-term sequelae associated with CSA. Guided by womanist theory, the purpose of this …
