Explorations in Ethnic Studies

On November 10, 1939 at Benedict College, a black institution in Columbia, black South Carolinians met to organize a state unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Poeple [People] (NAACP). The main objective of the new organization, the South Carolina Conference of NAACP, was to create an effective instrument to be used for propaganda, fund-raising and litigation purposes, and to function as a united front in the struggle to reclaim the ballot.
