Background: Health-care professional (HCP) students experience high levels of burnout, characterized by work- and school-related stress. Burnout is associated with a host of negative psychological and health outcomes. It may also contribute to cognitive dysfunction and decreased work productivity and may be related to trait mindfulness. This study cross-sectionally explored psychological distress and its correlates in a sample of interdisciplinary HCP students using cluster analysis.

Method: Fifty-seven interdisciplinary HCP students completed validated measures of burnout, depressive and anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, and rumination, which were entered into a cluster analysis. A neuropsychological test measured executive function; validated questionnaires assessed work …

Same Question, Different World: Replicating An Open Access Research Impact Study, Julie Arendt, Bettina Peacemaker, Hillary Miller Jan 2019

Same Question, Different World: Replicating An Open Access Research Impact Study, Julie Arendt, Bettina Peacemaker, Hillary Miller

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

To examine changes in the open access landscape over time, this study partially replicated Kristin Antelman’s 2004 study of open access citation advantage. Results indicated open access articles still have a citation advantage. For three of the four disciplines examined, the most common sites hosting freely available articles were independent sites, such as academic social networks or article sharing sites. For the same three disciplines, more than 70% of the open access copies were publishers’ PDFs. The major difference from Antelman’s is the increase in the number of freely available articles that appear to be in violation of publisher policies.

Challenging The "Good Fit" Narrative: Creating Inclusive Recruitment Practices In Academic Libraries, Jennifer Stout, Sojourna Cunningham, Samantha Guss Jan 2019

Challenging The "Good Fit" Narrative: Creating Inclusive Recruitment Practices In Academic Libraries, Jennifer Stout, Sojourna Cunningham, Samantha Guss

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

As a profession, we talk the talk of valuing diversity and inclusion, but do we walk the walk with our hiring practices? The profession stresses the importance of “a good fit” when hiring, but we rarely interrogate the fact that “a good fit” can be a reflection of our implicit biases. Academic librarians conducted a survey of hiring policies with a focus on the processes (or lack thereof) of recruiting candidates from underrepresented groups. This session will report on their findings and recommend the implementation of specific practices designed to create an inclusive candidate pool and an equitable search

Who Asked You? Consent, Self-Determination, And The Report Of The Pcc Ad Hoc Task Group On Gender In Name Authority Records, K. Adolpho

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This book chapter discusses the Program for Cooperative Cataloging Ad Hoc Task Group on Gender in Name Authority Records report of recommendations on recording gender in name authority records. The author argues that, although the work of the Task Group is a well-intentioned attempt to mitigate trans-exclusion in RDA 9.7, their overall report and proposed best practices are rooted in Western-centric, cisnormative understandings of gender that deny gender diverse people both agency over their own identities and decision-making power over the frameworks that seek to include them.

Green Infrastructure Initiative Plan, Benjamin P. Jones

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects

This plan was developed for the City of Richmond (VA) Department of Public Utilities with the purpose of identifying strategies to create Green Infrastructure (GI) development incentives among private properties. A series of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyses are used to target the most problematic stormwater runoff regions within Richmond. The research compares the effects of Richmond’s Combined Sewer System (CSS) to land uses and urban tree canopy cover to determine where GI would benefit overall water quality the most. The analyses indicate multi-family residential, commercial, and industrial properties within three regions as contributing the most to water quality degradation …

Optical Tweezers As An Effective Tool For Spermatozoa Isolation From Mixed Forensic Samples, Nicole Auka, Michael Valle, Bobby D. Cox, Peter D. Wilkerson, Tracey Dawson Cruz, Joseph E. Reiner, Sarah J. Seashols-Williams Jan 2019

Optical Tweezers As An Effective Tool For Spermatozoa Isolation From Mixed Forensic Samples, Nicole Auka, Michael Valle, Bobby D. Cox, Peter D. Wilkerson, Tracey Dawson Cruz, Joseph E. Reiner, Sarah J. Seashols-Williams

Forensic Science Publications

A single focus optical tweezer is formed when a laser beam is launched through a high numerical aperture immersion objective. This objective focuses the beam down to a diffraction-limited spot, which creates an optical trap where cells suspended in aqueous solutions can be held fixed. Spermatozoa, an often probative cell type in forensic investigations, can be captured inside this optical trap and dragged one by one across millimeter-length distances in order to create a cluster of cells which can be subsequently drawn up into a capillary for collection. Sperm cells are then ejected onto a sterile cover slip, counted, and …
