Balancing Books: The Problem Of Scholarly Publication In The Promotion/Tenure Process, Michael Spooner Oct 2005

Balancing Books: The Problem Of Scholarly Publication In The Promotion/Tenure Process, Michael Spooner

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

I never intended a career in publishing. In 1983, I was in grad school, trying to redeem an M.A. in literature by getting a more socially responsible M.A. in Teaching ESL, when somehow there was a baby on the way. I decided it was really my job to find a real job, and I happened into one in publishing. In those days, I wasn’t much of a people person, so the post of acquisitions editor had plenty of appeal. Acquisitions editors are the ones, as Dogbert says, who can reject your life’s work with a gesture and a witty remark. …

Has Technical Communication Arrived As A Profession, Kathy Pringle, Sean Williams Mar 2005

Has Technical Communication Arrived As A Profession, Kathy Pringle, Sean Williams

English Faculty Publications

This article examines the design and technology components of technical communication by investigating how practitioners imagine their work and the profession, specifically with respect to technology. In short, we wanted to interrogate the duality of “core design skills” and “technology skills” by asking practitioners to reflect both on the definition of technical communication and on the role technology plays in their work. We wanted to weigh claims that communication and rhetorical skills are important for success in the field against claims that knowledge of specific tools is likewise vitally important to success in the field. Technical communication historically has been …

The Politics Of Scale, Position, And Place In The Governance Of Water Resources In The Mekong Region, Louis Lebel, Po Garden, Masao Imamura Jan 2005

The Politics Of Scale, Position, And Place In The Governance Of Water Resources In The Mekong Region, Louis Lebel, Po Garden, Masao Imamura

All UNF Research

The appropriate scales for science, management, and decision making cannot be unambiguously derived from physical characteristics of water resources. Scales are a joint product of social and biophysical processes. The politics-of-scale metaphor has been helpful in drawing attention to the ways in which scale choices are constrained overtly by politics, and more subtly by choices of technologies, institutional designs, and measurements. In doing so, however, the scale metaphor has been stretched to cover a lot of different spatial relationships. In this paper, we argue that there are benefits to understanding—and actions to distinguish—issues of scale from those of place and …

Cache County Recycling And Greenwasteservice Study: Phase I Report, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, J. Ericksen

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This report summarizes the results of a survey project examining the attitudes and behaviors of Cache County residents regarding recycling and greenwaste disposal programs. The surveys were conducted by Utah State University on behalf of the City of Logan and the Cache County Service District No. 1 in the summer and fall of 2004. The purposes of the overall project were to gain a better understanding of the recycling behaviors of county residents, with particular focus on their views towards current recycling programs and feedback on the design of possible new county recycling efforts. In addition, we sought to evaluate …

Utah Wolf Management Plan, Utah Division Of Wildlife Resources Publication #: 05-17, The Utah Division Of Wildlife Resources, The Utah Wolf Working Group

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This plan will guide management of wolves in Utah during an interim period from delisting until 2015, or until it is determined that wolves have established1 in Utah, or assumptions of the plan (political, social, biological, or legal) change. During this interim period, arriving wolves will be studied to determine where they are most likely to settle without conflict.

The goal of this plan is to manage, study, and conserve wolves moving into Utah while avoiding conflicts with the wildlife management objectives of the Ute Indian Tribe; preventing livestock depredation; and protecting the investment made in wildlife in Utah.

Design-Based Research Strategies For Developing A Scientific Inquiry Curriculum In A Multi-User Virtual Environment, B. Nelson, D. J. Ketelhut, Jody Clarke-Midura, C. Bowman, C. Dede

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This National Science Foundation funded project is studying graphical multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) to investigate whether using this interactive medium in classroom settings can simulate real-world experimentation and can provide students with engaging, meaningful learning experiences that enhance scientific literacy. In the project's River City curriculum, teams of middle school students are asked to collaboratively solve a digital 19th century city's problems with illness, through interaction with digital artifacts, tacit clues, and computer-based 'agents' acting as mentors and colleagues in a virtual community of practice. This article describes the design-based research strategy by which we are currently extending an educational …

An Efficient Mechanism To Control Correlated Externalities: Redistributive Transfers And The Coexistence Of Region And Global Pollution Permit Markets, Arthur J. Caplan, Emilson C.D. Silva Jan 2005

An Efficient Mechanism To Control Correlated Externalities: Redistributive Transfers And The Coexistence Of Region And Global Pollution Permit Markets, Arthur J. Caplan, Emilson C.D. Silva

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

We examine joint tradable permit markets as a self-enforcing mechanism to control correlated externality problems. By “correlated” we mean multiple pollutants that are jointly produced by a single source but which simultaneously cause differentiated regional and global externalities (e.g. smog and global warming). By “self-enforcing” we mean a mechanism that accounts for the endogeneity that exists between competing jurisdictions in the setting of environmental policy within a federation of regions. We find that joint domestic and international permit markets are Pareto efficient for a wide class of preferences.

Risk-Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Atrazine In Drinking Water From Agricultural Activities And Policy Implications, Aklilu A. Tesfamichael, Arthur J. Caplan, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi Jan 2005

Risk-Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Atrazine In Drinking Water From Agricultural Activities And Policy Implications, Aklilu A. Tesfamichael, Arthur J. Caplan, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

This study provides an improved methodology for investigating the trade‐offs between the health risks and economic benefits of using atrazine in the agricultural sector by incorporating public attitude to pesticide management in the analysis. Regression models are developed to predict finished water atrazine concentration in high‐risk community water supplies in the United States. The predicted finished water atrazine concentrations are then used in a health risk assessment. The computed health risks are compared with the total economic surplus in the U.S. corn market for different atrazine application rates using estimated demand and supply functions developed in this work. Analysis of …

Serials Standards: Envisioning A Solution To The Online Serials Management Mess, Jennifer Duncan Jan 2005

Serials Standards: Envisioning A Solution To The Online Serials Management Mess, Jennifer Duncan

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Whereas the transmission of data relating to the initiation, renewal, or cancellation of serial subscriptions has developed into a robust and standardized system based on Electronic Data Exchange (EDI), the ability of serialists to effectively exchange and manipulate information pertaining to data about the specific content and access rights to the subscriptions at a given library has become increasingly problematic. The rapid development of local and vendor systems designed to handle subscription data has necessitated that this data be standardized for smooth exchange. Ted Fens' and Regina Reynolds' discussion of the standards work underway at NISO and EDltEUR. as well …

'Tea For Two' And The Rest Of The School: Valentine's Day At Adams Elementary, Randy Williams Jan 2005

'Tea For Two' And The Rest Of The School: Valentine's Day At Adams Elementary, Randy Williams

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

I have fond memories of creating valentines with my mother and then going out in the cover of night to place my love creations on family and friend's doorsteps, ring the bell, and hide in a nearby shrub to watch my "valentine" retrieve my heartfelt declarations. Why? That's the way we celebrated Valentine's Day in our family, our town. To me, Valentine celebrations have always been an adventure. That must be why when my oldest daughter (now 23) came home from first grade at Adams Elementary in Logan, Utah, with an invitation from the PTA to the school's Valentine's Tea …
