Additionally, increased social support is found to correlate with decreased symptoms of anxiety. Keywords: cognitive flexibility, social support, anxiety

The Effects Of True Crime Media, Zoe Patton Dec 2022

The Effects Of True Crime Media, Zoe Patton

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

True crime is a media genre of growing popularity, and also of growing controversy. Recent media production has sparked debate over how the genre affects the public's perception on crime, as well as how it affects the victims family. I wanted to discover how true crime media can be a genre that helps the public more than it hurts, and offers information and education rather than romanticization of terrible people and events, and discover all the ways that it can cause harm, so we can learn how to stop and understand the parts that can be harmful. Research was conducted …

Appropriation Vs Appreciation Of Latinix Culture: Where Do We Draw The Line?, Aleja Longoria Dec 2022

Appropriation Vs Appreciation Of Latinix Culture: Where Do We Draw The Line?, Aleja Longoria

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

In a modern society, Latinx culture is widely appreciated, respected, and celebrated. Though the line between appropriation and appreciation is constantly blurred by the growing commercialization, popularization, and expansion of the culture. Alongside the rapid spread of this beautiful culture, is the onset evolution of cultural appropriation. This can be seen in the celebration of Latinx holidays such as Dia de los Muertos, Cinco De Mayo, and even Beauty trends. The mass popularization of these holidays and practices has often taken away the meaning of each, leaving a feeling of our own culture being preempted before our own eyes. When …

Reversing The Gaze: Using Indigenous And Western Media Frames To Compare Coverage Of Climate Change And Indigenous Peoples In The News Media, Eric Wilkes Dec 2022

Reversing The Gaze: Using Indigenous And Western Media Frames To Compare Coverage Of Climate Change And Indigenous Peoples In The News Media, Eric Wilkes

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

The news media acts as an important conduit for shaping societal views of the socio-politics of climate change. While climate change will indeed affect everyone, it will not affect everyone equally. Indigenous peoples are among the populations whose well-being is threatened the most by climate change. International scholarship finds it is not uncommon for Indigenous cultures, communities, and perspectives to be underrepresented and misrepresented in Western climate change media. Research also indicates that fair Indigenous representation occurs when Indigenous peoples are the authors of news articles themselves. We performed a comparative content analysis of media coverage of climate change, environmental …

Bipoc Contributions Are Largely Excluded From Introductory Social Work Textbooks, Porscha Doucette Dec 2022

Bipoc Contributions Are Largely Excluded From Introductory Social Work Textbooks, Porscha Doucette

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

The National Association of Social Workers first added social justice to its Code of Ethics in 1979. However, the major focus for social justice was outside the profession itself. In order to genuinely work towards social justice, lingering institutional racism and white supremacy must be identified and rectified at every level of the profession, including its education.

Music Therapy As An Alternative To Traditional Therapy, Andrew Rasmussen Dec 2022

Music Therapy As An Alternative To Traditional Therapy, Andrew Rasmussen

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

I have always been fascinated by music and its ability to help myself focus and influence my mood. I never knew there was a specific therapy based on music itself. Originally I had planned to make an essay around if music was helpful for dementia research, which sadly was proven to be one hundred percent true and there was no room for an argument. In response I looked more into music therapy, and realized just how viable this form of therapy is. I personally evaluated around 20 sites worth of material, this allowed me to form a strong idea of …

Inter-Step Height Variation And Observations Of Fall-Related Events During Stairway Negotiation, Shandon Poulsen Dec 2022

Inter-Step Height Variation And Observations Of Fall-Related Events During Stairway Negotiation, Shandon Poulsen

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

INTRODUCTION: Variation in step height within a stairway could negatively impact safe stairway negotiation by decreasing step height predictability, and consequently, increasing stair users' fall risk. Unfortunately, inter-stairway step height variability is common, particularly in older stairways, but its impact may be lessened by highlighting steps' edges using high-contrast stripes on the top front edge of each step. Such contrast enhancement may draw greater attention to the steps' edges and potentially enhance the precision of the edge's estimated location. PURPOSE: To determine (1) if fall-related events are associated with greater inter-step height variation, and (2) if such fall-related events are …

The findings of the proposed study will identify potential social service gaps in rural areas, while also drawing attention to non-traditional organizations who are providing assistance outside of their specific missions.

Laughing All The While: Race, Gender, And Recreational Violence In The Mechanisms Fanwork, Katelyn Allred Dec 2022

Laughing All The While: Race, Gender, And Recreational Violence In The Mechanisms Fanwork, Katelyn Allred

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

From 1960s housewives exchanging Star Trek zines, to early-internet Harry Potter message boards, to small pockets of community on modern social media, fans have been connecting over their shared love of a source material for decades, and the Internet has made creating and finding both original and fan content more accessible around the globe. This kind of worldwide connection brings people into contact with people they might not meet otherwise and can foster an awareness of others' lives and perspectives. Though fandom has always been at least subtextually political, the last few years have brought more and more conscious use …

Black Scholes Delta Hedge In Imperfect Markets, Mitchell Pound Dec 2022

Black Scholes Delta Hedge In Imperfect Markets, Mitchell Pound

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

The Black-Scholes model for pricing European call options relies on continuous delta hedging with prices distributed log-normally with a known, constant volatility. This only works in a perfect, "frictionless" market. We simulate cumulative returns for a market maker using a discrete delta hedge with different time intervals between rebalancing the portfolio. A Julia package is developed by the authors to achieve this goal, which will be open source for the benefit of the public. Using the Julia package, we estimated the distribution of cumulative returns for a delta hedged portfolio by Monte Carlo analysis. This is done using both a …

Love And Support Is All They Need!, Krysten Yoho Dec 2022

Love And Support Is All They Need!, Krysten Yoho

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

What skills are needed to teach students with disabilities? Well, because I am going into the special education field for a career, I wanted to find some examples of skills to help me further expand my knowledge of needed skills. In my literature review, I was looking online at sources of previous special educators and their personal experiences and the skills they used in a special education classroom. After evaluating these sources, I found the most common and necessary skills needed to teach students that have disabilities are, love and unconditional support. Though there are many other skills that are …

The Many Cause Of Food Inflation, Jade Bird Dec 2022

The Many Cause Of Food Inflation, Jade Bird

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

My research investigates the problems with inflation today, starting with questions about what is causing inflation in the first place and how this will affect the economy. What made me first question why inflation is rising was simply noticing the continuous rise in ice cream prices one of my favorite treats. I did research through the internet and library resources finding primary and secondary research. I found that Inflation has been affected by multiple conflicts or problems over the past years, like less production and struggles in commerce, but the biggest one currently is labor shortages. Some other events causing …

What Works In Reskilling?, Brenden Bodily Dec 2022

What Works In Reskilling?, Brenden Bodily

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

Economies and technologies shift rapidly, which at times leaves workers behind with skills that are no longer as relevant as they used to be. Employers may also have difficulty finding employees who have the skills needed to take advantage of these new technologies. The result is a skills gap, meaning that there are lots of job openings in specialized fields and plenty of people looking for work, but they are unable to find a job because they do not have the skills to work in industries that are hiring. For example, the IDC estimates that the global shortage of web …

Childhood Sexual Abuse And Its Lasting Effects, Tessa Conrad Dec 2022

Childhood Sexual Abuse And Its Lasting Effects, Tessa Conrad

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

According to the CDC, one in every six boys and one in every four girls are sexually assaulted before they are eighteen. While most everyone agrees that childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is extremely harmful and can really disrupt a child's development, what they don't realize is how long the effects can last. For many survivors, they struggle with the effects for most of their lives. Just as there is a wide range for what actions are sexual abuse, there is even wider range for the effects and challenges that are left behind after the incident. These challenges include mental, emotional, …

Schoolyard Activity Of Children At Risk For Communication And/Or Language Delays, Mason Widdison Dec 2022

Schoolyard Activity Of Children At Risk For Communication And/Or Language Delays, Mason Widdison

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

INTRODUCTION Low parental education, hearing loss, premature birth, and several developmental disorders put children at risk for communication and/or language delays, which adversely affect social development and academic readiness. Our purpose was to characterize the outdoor free-play behaviors of children who are at risk of such delays to ultimately inform changes to the schoolyard environment which promote physical activity, social interaction, and language development. METHODS Children (N=16) in preschool or kindergarten who are at risk for communication and/or language delays were observed for a single day, which included one or two 30-minute recess periods, depending on whether the child attended …

Please, Sir, Can We Have More? Suggestions For Teaching Creative Writing In Secondary Education, Amy Shaw

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

The instruction of creative writing encourages students to engage in creative thinking. This leads to students using a variety of approaches to solve problems, analyze multiple viewpoints, adapt ideas, and arrive to new solutions. The purpose of this research is to identify ways educators can improve the incorporation and use of creative writing for secondary aged students. I surveyed students enrolled in creative writing class at USU about their previous school writing as well as interviewed former secondary school teachers about their experiences with creative writing in secondary school. In this study, I dive into some of the different lessons …

Disability Communication And How Society Needs To Be More Inclusive, Olivia Colton Dec 2022

Disability Communication And How Society Needs To Be More Inclusive, Olivia Colton

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

Historically people with disabilities have been discriminated against and oppressed by the dominant culture of "normal" people. During this project, I wanted to look more into how people with disabilities have been treated by society, are currently being treated in today's society, and how society needs to/should change to become more inclusive. For this project, my research was done using both library and internet sources to find both primary and secondary research. With this research, I was able to find and review both studies of people with disabilities and personal accounts and stories. After evaluating the sources I found that …

Wild/Feral Horses: The Great Debate Between Freedom And Capturing, Jolee Lamoreaux Dec 2022

Wild/Feral Horses: The Great Debate Between Freedom And Capturing, Jolee Lamoreaux

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

Wild Horses have been around for as long as anyone can remember. However, there has been a great debate that these horses are harmful to the environment and they need to be taken care of either by rehoming or slaughtering. This study aims to determine why people think these horses are harmful and what has been done to try and solve the issue. I conducted my research mostly by researching keywords and evaluating my search results to examine credible sources. The three major claims that I wanted to make sure I addressed in my paper were the history and background …

The Evolution Of Banned Books Week, Olivia Samuels

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022

Give Us Back Our Books! An Analysis of Banned Books Week and Why 2022 Is Different Although many will argue that Banned Books Week is simply another event to spread awareness that occurs in a similar manner every year, this year seems to stand out. Throughout this research I strove to provide an overview of Banned Books Week and how it has arguably evolved up to this point. This argument is framed by analysis of texts surrounding this event that serve as secondary sources for its evolution. I also utilized interviews with professionals in the English field because they provide …

Trauma: Forced Sterilizations Of Latina Women In The United States, Lisset Delgado, Wystan Hampton Dec 2021

Trauma: Forced Sterilizations Of Latina Women In The United States, Lisset Delgado, Wystan Hampton

Fall Student Research Symposium 2021

The purpose of our research is to understand the history of how American society has viewed Latina women and the oppression they have faced mainly due to forced sterilizations. Between the 1930s and 1970s, Latinos in the United States were forced to undergo sterilizations which have been a large contributor to the cause of multiple underlying mental health issues. Although the book Taína, written by Ernesto Quiñónez, is considered fiction, we understand that many of Quiñónez's stories within the book are based on actual events that took place in his life. As a result, his literary work will be …

Racial Disparity On Holding Penalties In The Nfl, Alex Dayley, Katelyn Williams, Terrance Bankhead, Cameron Wood Dec 2021

Racial Disparity On Holding Penalties In The Nfl, Alex Dayley, Katelyn Williams, Terrance Bankhead, Cameron Wood

Fall Student Research Symposium 2021

Numerous studies have identified and analyzed the existence and impact of racial discrimination on different aspects of United States culture, including the criminal justice system and professional sporting associations. For example, in the criminal justice system, research has found that minorities are more likely to experience a search of their vehicle during a traffic stop especially if the police officer is of a different race than the motorist. This analysis of racial bias can be applied to professional sporting associations, where split-second decisions are made which allows for the possibility of racial discrimination. In the NBA, research has found that …

Gender & Social Support In Young Adults, Sierra Howe, Amy Jensen, Kaitlin Welsh, Jalena Warner Dec 2021

Gender & Social Support In Young Adults, Sierra Howe, Amy Jensen, Kaitlin Welsh, Jalena Warner

Fall Student Research Symposium 2021

The effect of social support on mental health outcomes is important in understanding how best to address mental health issues in the general population. Young adulthood is a time of extreme stress and change which can often be a trigger for mental illness to occur. Previous research indicates gender as a major determinant for mental health outcomes, especially when exploring help-seeking behaviors. While women are more likely to seek support for mental illness, men are much more likely to self-medicate rather than seek help. Trans and gender diverse individuals were much less likely to receive social support for mental illness, …

Re-Envisioning Transforming Communities Initiative, Alyssa Cronin Dec 2021

Re-Envisioning Transforming Communities Initiative, Alyssa Cronin

Fall Student Research Symposium 2021

Have you ever seen a large problem you wished we could just solve already? There are many: poverty, homelessness, racism, hunter. The list goes on. Huge issues like these require people to step up to the plate and dismantle oppressive systems and construct better ones. Social workers have been doing this since their conception; however, engagement in these areas have been dwindling over the past decades. TCI was born in 2014 to help combat this by training the next generation of civically engaged social workers while conducting research and working with communities in Utah to create change. It is now …
