How Leaders And Employees Experience, Make Sense Of, And Find Meaning In Humility, David Perryman
How Leaders And Employees Experience, Make Sense Of, And Find Meaning In Humility, David Perryman
Theses & Dissertations
By just about any measure, organizations today are more dynamic, diverse, and interdependent than at any other time in history. This environment puts unprecedented pressure on the human capacity to lead. And still, we demand more from our leaders—even as employees experience rising stress levels, declining loyalty, and deteriorating trust in their employers, and organizations face historically high rates of employee turnover along with the resulting financial and emotional costs. Clinging to romanticized notions of the larger-than-life leader blinds us to the paradoxical promise of humility; namely, that a leader’s greatest strength may lie, ironically, in the ability …

Examining Follower Perceptions Of The Relationships Between Public Sector Leadership Behavior And Personality Traits, Robert Perez
Examining Follower Perceptions Of The Relationships Between Public Sector Leadership Behavior And Personality Traits, Robert Perez
Theses & Dissertations
To fill a gap of leadership research in the public sector, conducted in a municipal government department, in a southwestern United States city of over 1,000,000 residents, this quantitative survey research examined the relationships between 66 observer ratings (response rate of 46.15% from a sample of 143 participants) of a department director’s level of the Big Five personality traits, measured by the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3 (NEO-FFI-3), and transformational leadership as measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X (MLQ 5X). Demographic data was collected to examine potential relationships between the NEO-FFI-3 and MLQ 5x ratings. To compare the self-other ratings, the …
Learning About Two Immigrant Families' Educational Experiences And Educational Needs For Cultural Transmission From Trigenerational Family Storytelling, Kimvy V. Calpito
Learning About Two Immigrant Families' Educational Experiences And Educational Needs For Cultural Transmission From Trigenerational Family Storytelling, Kimvy V. Calpito
Theses & Dissertations
Research Focus. It is estimated that approximately one-third of children in the United States will be raised in immigrant families (Feliciano & Lanuza, 2017). Due to generational gaps and language mismatches from acculturation, immigrant family members tend to have difficulty communicating and interacting with one another (Buckingham & Brodsky, 2015; Ng, He, & Loong, 2004; Simes & Pietka-Nykaza, 2015). The researcher experienced similar challenges growing up, which led to her interest in studying how cultural differences among family members impact their dynamics. This research is important because it pertains to a large and growing group in our community as well …
Working Relationships Among Supervisors And Interns In Virtual Internships, Phillip D. Youngblood
Working Relationships Among Supervisors And Interns In Virtual Internships, Phillip D. Youngblood
Theses & Dissertations
Requiring experience to get a job is a familiar adage because employers want to know that new hires can not only work but can relate with others in a specific environment. This qualitative, multi-method, interpretive study explored the virtual internship as an option to the in-person internship that also enables employers and students to work with others anywhere in the world.
Intern supervisors and student interns experiencing virtual internships were invited to share the breadth of their experiences in an online survey. Analysis of survey data provided interview topics and a prioritized list of candidates who might provide the richest …
Beauty For Ashes: Reflections On Aesthetic Experience And Suffering, Douglas Gilmour
Beauty For Ashes: Reflections On Aesthetic Experience And Suffering, Douglas Gilmour
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
In this essay, I examine the relationship between aesthetic experience and suffering, and I specifically explore how and why the former can potentially serve to meliorate the severity of the latter. Of course, that art and beauty can provide a certain measure of comfort and healing to the afflicted is a universally acknowledged truth; however, the reasons why this should be so could be considered an equally universal mystery. “I feel we understand too little about the psychology of loss,” writes Arthur Danto, “to understand why the creation of beauty is so fitting a way of marking it.” By exploring …
Music Therapy As A Treatment For Female Adolescents With Childhood Abuse, Janice M. Dvorkin Psy.D, Acmt, Sierra Belmares
Music Therapy As A Treatment For Female Adolescents With Childhood Abuse, Janice M. Dvorkin Psy.D, Acmt, Sierra Belmares
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
This article describes the preference to using receptive music therapy as a modality for helping an adolescent who has PTSD from childhood abuses. Adolescence is a difficult period during the life span. The second stage of separation/individuation provides challenges to almost all adolescents. This article contains a description of the adolescent behaviors of someone who is experiencing the consequences of PTSD. Along with an explanation of why receptive music therapy is an effective therapy with this population is a case study.
Medusa As Victim And Tool Of Male Aggression, William S. Duffy
Medusa As Victim And Tool Of Male Aggression, William S. Duffy
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
While Medusa, like many monsters from Greek Mythology, has multiple origin stories, the one arguably best known to modern audiences is the one related in Ovid’s Metamorphoses 4.5750-803, in which Medusa is raped by Neptune in Minerva’s temple and subsequently punished by the goddess by being turned into the monster we all know. This means that Medusa is, to use the modern parlance, a survivor. Furthermore, Medusa’s experience after her violation echoes common elements of the survivor’s experience even millennia later. This suggests that many of the institutional responses to sexual assault that bedevil survivors today existed in some form …
Free Battered Texas Women: Survivor-Advocates Organizing At The Crossroads Of Gendered Violence, Disability, And Incarceration, Cathy Marston Phd
Free Battered Texas Women: Survivor-Advocates Organizing At The Crossroads Of Gendered Violence, Disability, And Incarceration, Cathy Marston Phd
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
This article recaps my symposium presentation, where I argue that feminist organizing strategies are central to healing our society and creating restorative justice from my perspective as a survivor of occupational injury, battering, and criminalization for self-defense. This includes the creation of Free Battered Texas Women. We prefer to think of ourselves as survivor-advocates who use a variety of tactics to empower ourselves, incarcerated battered women, and citizens. These strategies include pedagogy; poetry and other written forms; art; and legislative advocacy. I blend this grassroots activism with feminist disability theory, radical feminist theory, feminist ethnography, and feminist criminology.
