Purpose: Generally, theory and research investigating the effectiveness of mentoring has offered little resounding evidence to attest to mentoring programmes being a strategic initiative that make a real difference in reducing the educational inequities many minority students endure. In contrast to this existing research base, the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) has often been cited as one of the most successful mentoring initiatives within Australia. It is the purpose of this chapter to examine how AIME may impact on the educational aspirations and school self-concept of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Gifted and talented students are a diverse and often overlooked group of students. Research suggests that this may be at least partly related to limited gifted and talented education training at the preservice level. In fact, within an Australian context, preservice training in gifted and talented education in Australia has consistently been found to be insufficient. Given that the last study of Australian preservice gifted and talented education offerings was conducted in 2005, however, the current study sought to investigate whether these provisions had substantially changed in the eight years since that study. The Efficacious Responses Of University Students During A Season Of Sport Education, Dana Perlman, Park Lockwood

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the Sport Education Model (SEM) on students' physical self-efficacy (PSE), perceived physical ability (PPA) and perceived self-presentation (PSP) in physical education. Two intact heterogeneous university classes were engaged in 16 lessons of a volleyball unit, using either the SEM or Traditional approach (Skill-Drill-Game). Data were collected using a pretest/posttest design measuring PSE, PPA and PSP. Analysis of data utilized three separate repeated measures ANOVA calculations. Results indicated significant increases in PPA for students engaged in the SEM.

The idea of a Special Issue of the International Journal of Psychophysiology focusing on research "down under" emerged in 2012 from discussions between the Society President (Robert Barry), the journal Publisher (Shamus O'Reilly), and the Editor-in-Chief (Connie Duncan). It was greeted with enthusiasm by the Society Executive, who set up an Editorial Committee to progress the project, beginning with establishment of timelines, evaluations of the conference abstracts accepted for presentation at the 2012 meeting of the Australasian Society for Psychophysiology, ASP2012, and critical scrutiny of each conference presentation. Access to and participation in university education is a key equity issue, with increased efforts to widen the participation of secondary school-aged students from low socio-economic status (LSES) backgrounds in many countries worldwide. In Australia, programmes aimed at widening university participation generally target LSES children and young people engaged in schooling. Access to such programmes thus demands a connection to schooling, yet not all school-age young people have such connections: they may experience what we term 'precarious' relationships to education. Background: Cold and influenza transmission is a serious public health issue for universities. This case study describes a coordinated social marketing campaign that incorporated health messages and products. It was designed to motivate behavior change to prevent the spread of colds and influenza on a university campus. Methods: The aims of this multi-component intervention were to raise awareness of the importance of individual behavior in preventing the spread of colds and flu and to encourage staff and students to adopt three simple habits: hand washing, cough or sneeze in sleeve, and stay at home if sick. In this article, we highlighted the stories of university student mentors who are involved in the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME). The AIME program works with young Indigenous school students, at primary and secondary school levels, to encourage continued participation in education and to consider university as a viable life goal. The AIME program is explored from the perspective of the university students who are selected to mentor young Australian Indigenous school students. Adopting a narrative inquiry approach, the article presents richly descriptive insight into the motivations of these mentors and highlights how this experience has impacted upon them. While …
