Study Of Reaction Sequences During Msr Synthesis Of Tic By Controlled Ball Milling Of Titanium And Graphite, Erhuvwu J. Oghenevweta, David Wexler, Andrzej Calka

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

During reactive ball milling of Ti and C, mechanically induced self-propagating reaction (MSR) synthesis of TiC is reported to occur via a process including initial formation of small amounts of TiC prior to exothermic ignition, followed by MSR and the formation of stiochiometric TiC (Dorofeev et al., 2011; Oghenevweta et al., 2016 [1, 2]). However, both the chemical evolution and mechanisms of reaction and growth of TiC both prior to, during and after ignition are not fully understood. This research focuses on fundamental understanding of the reaction sequences during MSR synthesis of TiC from elemental Ti and C (graphite).

Ambient Controlled Synthesis Of Advanced Core-Shell Plasmonic Ag@Zno Photocatalysts, Jinyan Xiong, Qiao Sun, Jun Chen, Zhen Li, S X. Dou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Plasmonic Ag@ZnO core-shell hybrids, including hetero-nanowires and hetero-nanoparticles, have been synthesized at room temperature for application in photocatalysis. The morphology, size, crystal structure, and composition of the products were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. It was found the concentration of Zn(NO3)2·6H2O and the amount of water play crucial roles in the formation of Ag@ZnO core-shell hybrids. The resultant Ag@ZnO core-shell hybrids exhibit much higher photocatalytic activity and stability towards degradation of organic contaminants than pure ZnO nanocrystals under solar light irradiation. The one-dimensional (1D) core-shell hetero-nanowires prepared under optimal conditions …

Reproducing Personal Sound Zones Using A Hybrid Synthesis Of Dynamic And Parametric Loudspeakers, Jacob Donley, Christian H. Ritz, Bastiaan (Willem) Kleijn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper proposes a hybrid approach to personal sound zones utilising multizone soundfield reproduction techniques and parametric loudspeakers. Crossover filters are designed, to switch between reproduction methods, through analytical analysis of aliasing artifacts in multizone reproductions. By realising the designed crossover filters, wideband acoustic contrast between zones is significantly improved. The trade-off between acoustic contrast and the bandwidth of the reproduced soundfield is investigated. Results show that by incorporating the proposed hybrid model the whole wideband bandwidth is spatial-aliasing free with a mean acoustic contrast consistently above 54.2dB, an improvement of up to 24.2dB from a non-hybrid approach, with as …

Facile Synthesis Of Coaxial Cnts/Mnox-Carbon Hybrid Nanofibers And Their Greatly Enhanced Lithium Storage Performance, Zunxian Yang, Jun Lv, Haidong Pang, Wenhuan Yan, Kun Qian, Tailiang Guo, Zaiping Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/MnOx-Carbon hybrid nanofibers have been successfully synthesized by the combination of a liquid chemical redox reaction (LCRR) and a subsequent carbonization heat treatment. The nanostructures exhibit a unique one-dimensional core/shell architecture, with one-dimensional CNTs encapsulated inside and a MnOx-carbon composite nanoparticle layer on the outside. The particular porous characteristics with many meso/micro holes/pores, the highly conductive one-dimensional CNT core, as well as the encapsulating carbon matrix on the outside of the MnOx nanoparticles, lead to excellent electrochemical performance of the electrode. The CNTs/MnOx-Carbon hybrid nanofibers exhibit a high initial reversible capacity of …

The conventional method to prepare functional oxides is ceramicpowder- based processing typically via solid-state reaction of microcrystalline starting powders at high temperatures. Disadvantages of this approach include the high temperatures of reaction, limited degree of product chemical homogeneity and difficulties in achieving rapid sintering. Various chemicalbased processing routes have been developed to prepare powders of more homogeneous composition, improved reactivity and sintering ability at low temperatures. Regardless of the route chosen to synthesise complex oxides, almost all of them require lengthy heat treatment schedules that usually exceed 10 h, as well as multi-stage processing steps. We describe two approaches to …

We present ontological meta-analysis and synthesis of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) as a method for reviewing, mapping, and visualizing the research literature in the domain cumulatively, logically, systematically, and systemically. The method will highlight the domain's bright spots which are heavily emphasized, the light spots which are lightly emphasized, the blind spots which have been overlooked, and the blank spots which may never be emphasized. It will highlight the biases and asymmetries in the domain's research; the research can then be realigned to make it stronger and more effective. We present an ontology for HIPAA, map the …

A concise synthesis of (−)-steviamine is reported along with the synthesis of its analogues 10-nor-steviamine, 10-nor-ent-steviamine and 5-epi-ent-steviamine. These compounds were tested against twelve glycosidases (at 143 μg mL−1 concentrations) and were found to have in general poor inhibitory activity against most enzymes. The 10-nor analogues however, showed 50–54% inhibition of α-L-rhamnosidase from Penicillium decumbens while one of these, 10-nor-steviamine, showed 51% inhibition of N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (from Jack bean) at the same concentration (760 μM).

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Transition-metal complexes of the types [Re(CO)3Cl(NN)], [Re(CO)3py(NN)]+, and [Cu(PPh3)2(NN)]+, where NN = 4,4′-bis(5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)-2,2′-bipyridine (OX) and 4,4′-bis(N,N-diphenyl-4-[ethen-1-yl]-aniline)-2,2′-bipyridine (DPA), have been synthesized and characterized. Crystal structures for [Re(CO)3Cl(DPA)] and [Cu(PPh3)2(OX)]BF4 are presented. The crystal structure of the rhenium complex shows a trans arrangement of the ethylene groups, in agreement with density functional theory calculations. The structure of the copper complex displays the planar aromatic nature of the bpy–oxadiazole ligand. Density functional theory modeling of the complexes was supported by comparison of calculated and experimental normalized Raman spectra; the mean absolute deviations of the complexes were <10 cm–1. The Franck–Condon state was investigated using UV–vis and resonance Raman spectroscopic as well as density functional theory computational techniques. It was shown that the lowest energy absorption peaks are metal to ligand charge transfer and ligand-centered charge transfer for the oxadiazole- and diphenylaniline-substituted bipyridine ligands, respectively. The lowest energy excited states were characterized using transient emission and absorption spectroscopic techniques in conjunction with density functional theory calculations. These showed that the DPA complexes had ligand-centered nonemissive “dark” states with lifetimes ranging from 300 to 2000 ns.

Propargyl amines 4, where R3 is aryl, undergo 5-exo-dig cyclization reactions under relatively mild conditions (AgNO3, DMF, 60 °C, 1 h) to give 3-amino-2,3-dihydro-2-arylmethylidenebenzofurans 5 (R3 = aryl). In contrast, substrates where R3 is alkyl undergo competing 6-endo-dig and 5-exo-dig cyclization processes. The hydroxymethyl substrate 4 (R3 = CH2OH), however, was smoothly converted to its corresponding 5-exo-dig cyclization product 5, likely due to the assistance of the primary hydroxyl group in the 5-exo-dig cyclization process by silver cation coordination. Under more enforcing conditions (AgNO3, DMF, 100 °C, 18 h), the initially formed products 5 undergo a 1,3-allylic rearrangement to their …

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Temperate Australia sits between the heat engine of the tropics and the cold Southern Ocean, encompassing a range of rainfall regimes and falling under the influence of different climatic drivers. Despite this heterogeneity, broad-scale trends in climatic and environmental change are evident over the past 30 ka. During the early glacial period (∼30–22 ka) and the Last Glacial Maximum (∼22–18 ka), climate was relatively cool across the entire temperate zone and there was an expansion of grasslands and increased fluvial activity in regionally important Murray–Darling Basin. The temperate region at this time appears to be dominated by expanded sea ice …

Mixed-Metal (Li, Al) Amidoborane: Synthesis And Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Properties, Guanglin Xia, Yingbin Tan, Xiaowei Chen, Zaiping Guo, Hua-Kun Liu, Xuebin Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Mixed-metal (Li, Al) amidoborane has been synthesized via mechanical ball milling of ammonia borane with lithium hexahydridoaluminate in different molar ratios. The reversible dehydrogenation properties of the thus-synthesized metallic amidoborane and its mixtures with ammonia borane in different ratios were systematically investigated in comparison with neat ammonia borane (AB). On the basis of thermogravimetric analysis and mass spectrometry results, the thus-synthesized mixed-metal amidoborane was shown to release around 10 wt% hydrogen below 200 degrees C, with an effective suppression of volatile side products. Furthermore, a synergistic effect between metallic amidoborane and ammonia borane has been identified, which leads to the …

Rapid Synthesis Of Free-Standing Moo3/Graphene Films By The Microwave Hydrothermal Method As Cathode For Bendable Lithium Batteries, Lukman Noerochim, Jia-Zhao Wang, David Wexler, Zhong Chao, Hua-Kun Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Highly flexible, binder-free, MoO3 nanobelt/graphene film electrode is prepared by a two-step microwave hydrothermal method. Graphene is first prepared by an ultra-fast microwave hydrothermal method and then mixed with MoO3 solution to synthesize the MoO3 nanobelt/graphene composite, which exhibits the combination of stacked graphene sheets and uniform MoO3 nanobelts with widths of 200-500 nm and lengths of 5-10 μm. The charge-discharge measurements show that the as-synthesized MoO3/graphene hybrid materials demonstrate excellent rate capability, large capacity, and good cycling stability compared to the pure MoO3 film. An initial discharge capacity of 291 mAh g-1 can be obtained at 100 mA g-1, …

Encoding Navigable Speech Sources: A Psychoacoustic-Based Analysis-By-Synthesis Approach, Xiguang Zheng, Christian Ritz, Jiangtao Xi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a psychoacoustic-based analysis-by-synthesis approach for compressing navigable speech sources. The approach targets multi-party teleconferencing applications, where selective reproduction of individual speech sources is desired. Based on exploiting sparsity of speech in the perceptual time-frequency domain, multiple speech signals are encoded into one mono mixture signal, which can be further compressed using a standard speech codec. Using side information indicating the active speech source for each time frequency instant enables flexible decoding and reproduction. Objective results highlight the importance of considering perception when exploiting the sparse nature of speech in the time-frequency domain. Results show that this sparsity, …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A germanium-graphene nanocomposite material with three-dimensional nanostructures has been synthesized by an efficient one-step, in situ, and aqueous-based method. The electrochemical properties of the germanium-graphene nanocomposite have been evaluated by galvanostatic discharge-charge cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results show that the germanium-graphene nanocomposite has a much more stable cycling performance than that of the pure germanium, with a capacity of about 832 mA h g-1 after 50 cycles. The rate capability is also improved significantly. The superior performance is attributed to the graphene content, which increases the material's conductivity, enlarges the specific surface area, delivers enough sites to …

Synthesis And Optimization Of Pedot:Pss Based Ink For Printing Nanoarrays Using Dip-Pen Nanolithography, Michal Wagner, Cathal O'Connell, David G. Harman, Ryan Sullivan, Ari Ivaska, Michael J. Higgins, Gordon G. Wallace

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Due to the current interest in organic printable electronics, Dip-Pen Nanolithography (DPN) is increasingly being explored as a method to pattern electroactive materials such as conducting polymers (CPs) on the micro- and nanoscale. In general, printing process depends strongly on the ink-substrate properties and fundamental forces required to drive and stabilize the ink transfer to the substrate. Controlling these parameters is especially difficult when operating under the nanometer confinements of the DPN probe. For the printing of CPs, one step towards addressing these challenges is rational ink design, as the use of existing commercial-based inks may not be suitable for …

A new procedure for the stereoselective synthesis of cross-conjugated dienones is reported. This method makes use of the Diels–Alder adduct of anthracene and dimethyl fumarate, a precursor to a spirocyclopent-2-enone anthracene adduct as the key intermediate. The addition of propyllithium or octyllithium to the key intermediate followed by a retro-Diels–Alder reaction furnished α-methylenecyclopentenones bearing a γ-propyl or γ-octyl side chain, respectively, in moderate yields and as single geometric isomers.

Using aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase/suppressor tRNA pairs derived from Methanocaldococcus jannaschii, an Escherichia coli cell-free protein production system affords proteins with site-specifically incorporated unnatural amino acids (UAAs) in high yields through the use of optimized amber suppressor tRNACUA opt and optimization of reagent concentrations. The efficiency of the cell-free system allows the incorporation of trifluoromethyl-phenylalanine using a polyspecific synthetase evolved previously for p-cyanophenylalanine, and the incorporation of UAAs at two different sites of the same protein without any re-engineering of the E. coli cells used to make the cell-free extract.

To further expand the structure–cytotoxic activity relationships of isatin derivatives and to reduce flexibility in substituent groups at nitrogen, 20 analogues incorporating a ring system between the N1 and C7 atoms of isatin were prepared using a variety of synthetic strategies. This yielded pyrroloindole-, pyrroloquinoline-, pyrroloacridine-, pyrrolophenanthridine- and benzopyrrolophenanthridine-based systems with embedded isatin moieties, the latter possessing a novel carbon skeleton. These compounds were subsequently assessed for their in vitro cytotoxicity against human U937 lymphoma cells, with the brominated pyrroloacridine dione 27 showing the most promising activity (IC50 3.01 μM) after 24 h.

The ability of macrocyclic ligands to facilitate formation of dispersions of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was investigated using a combination of absorption spectrophotometry and optical microscopy. Vacuum filtration of aqueous dispersions containing SWNTs and various macrocyclic ligands (derivatised porphyrin, phthalocyanine, cyclodextrin and calixarene) afforded self-supporting membranes known as buckypapers. Microanalytical data and energy dispersive X-ray spectra were obtained for these buckypapers and provided evidence for retention of the macrocyclic ligands within the structure of the membranes. The electrical conductivities of the membranes varied between 30 ± 20 and 220 ± 60 S cm−1, while contact angle analysis revealed they all …

The protic and Lewis acid promoted cyclization reactions of tethered furan-4,5-dihydroxypiperid-2-ones, furan-4,5-diacetoxypiperid-2-ones and furan-3,4-diacetoxypyrrolid-2-ones, via their corresponding N-acyliminium ion intermediates, have been studied. In the case of the furan-4,5-dihydroxypiperid-2-one 2a and its diacetate derivative 2b, macrocyclic products were formed from an initial intermolecular reaction between 2a or 2b, via the nucleophilic C5 furan carbon, and their corresponding N-acyliminium ion intermediates. When the furan C5 position of 2b was blocked by substitution with bromine then TFA or Sc(OTf)3 catalysed cyclization reactions gave a spirotricyclic product (a 5-6-6-tricycle) in a highly diastereoselective manner. Cyclization of the analogous C5-Br-furan-pyrrolidone 29 with TFA resulted …
