In case of earthquakes and crustal movement, the concentration of impounding load over a large region of crust can cause disturbances to the stratum. In order to quantitatively investigate crack initiation, propagation and coalescence processes of jointed stratum based on thermal variations caused by concentrated mechanical loading, a series of indention tests were performed on granite specimens. In the experiment, fracture process and resulting infrared radiation fields of specimens were respectively recorded by synchronized digital image correlation system and infrared camera. Numerical and experimental analyses are often used to evaluate the solar thermal system with latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES). However, the relationship between the numerical simulation and actual heat transfer process is still unclear. In this study, long-term performance of a persulfate (PS)-assisted direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process was examined for the treatment of secondary treated effluent spiked with a mixture of micropollutants including three pesticides and nine pharmaceuticals. A stand-alone DCMD ('control') was also operated under identical operating conditions for comparison. Depending on the micropollutant, the stand-alone DCMD achieved 86 to >99% removal. In comparison, removal by the PS-assisted DCMD was >99% for all investigated micropollutants. This paper investigated the influences of temperature and grain size on the deformability of pure copper in micro compression process. Based on the dislocation theory, a constitutive model was proposed taking into account the influences of forming temperature, Hall-Petch relationship and surface layer model. Vacuum heat treatment was employed to obtain various grain sizes of cylindrical workpieces, and then laser heating method was applied to heat workpieces during microforming process. Ice slurry can be used as the thermal storage media in latent cool storage systems for both residential and commercial buildings. This paper presents the investigation of the phase change characteristics of the ice slurry using a two-fluid Lattice Boltzmann Method (TFLBM). Using nonlinear finite element method, a thermo-mechanical coupled simulation model for the formation mechanism of the laminated crack defect has been established in the upsetting of heavy disk-shaped forgings. Through numerical simulation, the distributions of stress, equivalent strain and strain rate were analysed. Meanwhile the distribution diagram of stress state evolution was obtained, and the uncoordinated deformation, under tri-lateral compression, is determined as the main reason leading to laminated crack defect. Hydrogels consisting of interpenetrating networks of ionically and covalently crosslinked polymers showed high toughness and mechanical recoverability as a result of the dissociation and re-formation of ionic crosslinks. The present investigation aimed to provide a quantitative study on the mechanical recoverability and damage process of an example hybrid gel of calcium crosslinked alginate and covalently crosslinked polyacrylamide. Conducting polymer actuators show unique characteristics suitable to driving such manipulators, however despite their potential, the current fabrication method of the trilayer structures does not allow constructing advanced micromanipulators operating in air using this technology. Etching process related material and mechanical changes on solid-core single-mode polymer optical fiber (POF) and their influence on the characteristic properties of polymer fiber Bragg gratings (PFBGs) are studied. A poly(methyl methacrylate)-based POF is etched to different diameters, and it is experimentally demonstrated that etching can lead to a change in the Young's modulus of the fiber. It is found that etching process induced material changes of the polymer fiber can enhance the reflectivity and inherent sensitivity of PFBGs. The impact of sludge interchange rate (SIR) on sludge reduction by oxic-settling-anoxic (OSA) process was investigated. The sludge yield of an OSA system (a sequencing batch reactor, SBR, integrated with external anoxic reactors) was compared to that of a control (an SBR attached to a single-pass aerobic digester). SIR (%) is the percentage by volume of sludge returned from the external reactor into the main bioreactor of the OSA, and was varied from 0-22%. OSA achieved greater sludge reduction when fed with unsettled sewage (sCOD=113 mg/L) rather than settled sewage (sCOD=60 mg/L). The SIR of 11% resulted in the highest …

A micro hydromechanical deep drawing is carried out using the pure titanium and the effect of fluid pressure on formability of pure titanium is investigated. The experiments are performed using the two kinds of pure titanium foils (TR270C-H and TR270C-O) and stainless steel foil (SUS304-H) with 50 thickness and the cylindrical and conical punches. A refined microstructure consisting of martensite and retained austenite at room temperature has been produced in a Nb-microalloyed low carbon Si-Mn steel by a novel heat-treatment, pre-quenching prior to quenching and partitioning processes (Q&Q-P). The results showed that compared with the conventional quenching and partitioning steel the mechanical properties of steel obtained by the novel treatment have been significantly improved, with a good combination of ultimate tensile strength (1000MPa) and total elongation (above 30%). We demonstrate the simultaneous extraction of phosphorus and clean water from digested sludge centrate using a forward osmosis (FO)−membrane distillation (MD) hybrid process. In this FO−MD hybrid process, FO concentrates orthophosphate and ammonium for subsequent phosphorus recovery in the form of struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O), while MD is used to recover the draw solution and extract clean water from the digested sludge centrate. A decline in water flux was observed during the FO process, but fouling was largely reversible after a brief, simple membrane flushing using deionized water. Twin-roll strip casting is a concerned technology for economically producing magnesium alloys sheets. In this paper, numerical simulation of the twin-roll strip casting of an AZ61 magnesium alloy was carried out and the optimal process parameters were obtained. Then, under the conditions obtained through simulation, AZ61 strips of good surface quality were successfully manufactured. The microstructure of the alloy by twin-rolled strip casting is obvious refined compared with that by conventional casting.

The Navier-Stokes equations for porous media are used to capture the hydrodynamic behavior, whereas, numerically, a new algorithm is proposed to solve the Navier-Stokes equation in a nonlinear form. Size effect is a special phenomenon in metal micro-forming process. As the deformation process is scale down to micro/mesoscale, the characteristics of single grain involved in the deformed region play a significant role on the material mechanical behaviours resulting in the invalidation of classical theories in microforming. “Centrifuge-on-a-chip” is a versatile and multifunctional microfluidic chip which can conduct operations of selective trapping, enrichment, labeling and solution exchange. In this work, the mechanism of selective trapping ability was studied by both the experiments and numerical simulation. We proved the existence of shear gradient lift force in the expansion-contraction cavity and derived an explicit expression of it. Also, a numerical modeling was developed to study the trapping process of micro-particles in a “Centrifuge-on-a-chip”. We analyse the steady-state operation of a continuous flow bioreactor in which the biochemical reaction is governed by noncompetitive substrate inhibition (Andrews kinetics). A generalized reactor model is used in which the well-stirred bioreactor and the idealized membrane bioreactor are special cases. As generic properties of systems subject to substrate inhibition have been obtained by other authors, we discuss reaction engineering features specific to Andrews kinetics.
