Analysis On Integrated Lpg Cook Stove And Induction Cooktop For Cooking Purposes In Bhutan, Roshan Chheti, Dawa Chhoedron, Tilak Sunwar, Duane A. Robinson

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

It has not been many years since a majority of Bhutanese were cooking with firewood as their fuel source. However, over the years the fuel mix has been changing and depicting increasing share of clean fuel such as electricity (hydropower generation) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Subsequently there is a massive opportunity to switch into modern, clean and efficient cooking technologies such as induction cooktops and reduce the overall fuel/wood consumption. Induction cooktop is a fairly new concept in the country; therefore, users are often sceptical about investing in them due to lack of awareness on the cost-benefit analysis. Various …

Comprehensive Gait Analysis Of Healthy Older People: Unveiling Reasons For Lack Of Long-Distance Walking, Mustafa M. Elhadi, Christina Ma, Duo Wong, Anson Wan, Winson Lee Jan 2017

Comprehensive Gait Analysis Of Healthy Older People: Unveiling Reasons For Lack Of Long-Distance Walking, Mustafa M. Elhadi, Christina Ma, Duo Wong, Anson Wan, Winson Lee

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Many older adults do not adhere to the recommended physical activity levels. This study examines the gait changes upon long-distance walking among healthy older adults. Gait tests of 24 adults aged 65 or more were conducted at the baseline, at the end of 30 and 60 minutes of treadmill walk. Spatial temporal, kinematic and kinetic gait data were computed. Perceived level of exertion was evaluated for each subject. Ten subjects (Group B) perceived higher exertion level than the remaining fourteen subjects (Group A). After walking, group B had significant reductions in dominant-side ankle joint range of motion and power, suggesting …

Ventilative Cooling Through Automated Window Opening Control Systems To Address Thermal Discomfort Risk During The Summer Period: Framework, Simulation And Parametric Analysis, Theofanis Psomas, Massimo Fiorentini, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Per K. Heiselberg Jan 2017

Ventilative Cooling Through Automated Window Opening Control Systems To Address Thermal Discomfort Risk During The Summer Period: Framework, Simulation And Parametric Analysis, Theofanis Psomas, Massimo Fiorentini, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Per K. Heiselberg

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Automated window opening control systems with integrated ventilative cooling strategies may significantly diminish the thermal discomfort and overheating risk of dwellings during cooling periods in temperate climates. One of the challenges with demonstrating the benefits of the systems is the lack of building performance simulation (BPS) tools which may represent precisely how actual algorithms are applied.

The study supported herein aims to present a framework of how to simulate an advanced ventilative cooling algorithm of a window system on coupled BPS environments (ESP-r and BCVTB tools). Parametric analysis has been conducted to verify specific operational functions of the system. The …

Heat Transfer Analysis Of An Integrated Double Skin Facade And Phase Change Material Blind System, Yilin Li, Jo Darkwa, Georgios Kokogiannakis Jan 2017

Heat Transfer Analysis Of An Integrated Double Skin Facade And Phase Change Material Blind System, Yilin Li, Jo Darkwa, Georgios Kokogiannakis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In this study, the heat transfer in an integrated double skin facade (DSF) and phase change material (PCM) blind system has been theoretically analysed. Both heat transfer and airflow models with CFD methods have been developed for the integrated DSF and PCM blind system. Data from an existing typical DSF building have been obtained in order to define input parameters for the simulation exercise and validate the numerical models. The temperature and velocity fields in DSF with the PCM blind system has been predicted under overheating scenario using the ANSYS Workbench FLUENT software and been compared with case of conventional …

Numerical Analysis Of Indoor Thermal Comfort In A Cross-Ventilated Space With Top-Hung Windows, Xiang Deng, Paul Cooper, Zhenjun Ma, Georgios Kokogiannakis Jan 2017

Numerical Analysis Of Indoor Thermal Comfort In A Cross-Ventilated Space With Top-Hung Windows, Xiang Deng, Paul Cooper, Zhenjun Ma, Georgios Kokogiannakis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Natural ventilation can be used in residential buildings in several Australian climatic zones and well-designed windows have the potential to facilitate indoor thermal comfort by allowing occupants to control volumetric outdoor airflow and indoor air velocities. Top-hung window is one of the most popular window types in Australia. This paper investigates the effect of the attributes of top-hung windows (i.e. window length, aspect ratio, height above the ground, window opening angle and the fly screen porosity) and outdoor air conditions (i.e. outdoor air temperature, wind speed and direction) on indoor thermal comfort during cross ventilation using CFD simulations. The Taguchi …

Coupled Dem-Fem Analysis For Simulating Ballasted Rail Tracks, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn Jan 2017

Coupled Dem-Fem Analysis For Simulating Ballasted Rail Tracks, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Ballasted tracks play an essential role in its economy through transporting freight and bulk commodities between major cities and ports, and carrying passengers, particularly in urban areas. Ballast usually consists of hard and strong angular particles, which are derived from high strength unweathered rocks. Ballast aggregates undergo gradual and continuing degradation under cyclic train loadings. In this study, the load-deformation responses of ballasted rail tracks subjected to cyclic loading are studied experimentally using a large-scale Track Process Simulation Apparatus (TPSA), and numerically through a coupled discrete-continuum approach, namely, coupled DEM-FEM. Laboratory tests are carried out to examine the deformation and …
