There is a commonly held perception that the majority of Australian teenagers drink alcohol, and a perceived 'social norm' among teenagers that their peers are drinkers and expect them to be drinkers. However, results of the Australian Secondary Schools Alcohol and Drug (ASSAD) Survey, conducted every three years since 1984, show a decline in the proportion of teenagers who are regular drinkers; from 30% of 12-15 year olds in 1984 to 11% in 2011, and 50% of 16-17 years olds in 1984 down to 33% in 2011 (White & Bariola, 2012). The 'Alcohol and Social Norms Project' conducted in a …

The human hippocampus has been broadly studied in the context of memory and normal brain function and its role in different neuropsychiatric disorders has been heavily studied. While many imaging studies treat the hippocampus as a single unitary neuroanatomical structure, it is, in fact, composed of several subfields that have a complex three-dimensional geometry. As such, it is known that these subfields perform specialized functions and are differentially affected through the course of different disease states. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can be used as a powerful tool to interrogate the morphology of the hippocampus and its subfields. Many groups use …

A Fe/Fe3o4/N-Carbon Composite With Hierarchical Porous Structure And In Situ Formed N-Doped Graphene-Like Layers For High-Performance Lithium Ion Batteries, Yao Li, Qing Meng, Shenmin Zhu, Zeng-Hui Sun, Hao Yang, Zhixin Chen, Chengling Zhu, Zaiping Guo, Di Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Fe/Fe3O4/N-carbon composite consisting of a porous carbon matrix containing a highly conductive N-doped graphene-like network and Fe/Fe3O4 nanoparticles was prepared. The porous carbon has a hierarchical structure which is inherited from rice husk and the N-doped graphene-like network formed in situ. When used as an anode material for lithium batteries, the composite delivered a reversible capacity of approximately 610 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 200 mA g(-1) even after 100 cycles, due to the synergism between the unique hierarchical porous structures, highly electrically conductive N-doped graphene- like networks and nanosized particles of Fe/Fe3O4. This work provides a …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A hot compression bonding process was developed to prepare a novel laminated composite consisting of high-Cr cast iron (HCCI) as the inner layer and low carbon steel (LCS) as the outer layers on a Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator at a temperature of 950 °C and a strain rate of 0.001 S-1. Interfacial bond quality and hot deformation behaviour of the laminate were studied by microstructural characterisation and mechanical tests. Experimental results show that the metallurgical bond between the constituent metals was achieved under the proposed bonding conditions without discernible defects and the formation of interlayer or intermetallic layer …

Excellent Melt Lubrication Of Alkali Metal Polyphosphate Glass For High Temperature Applications, A Kiet Tieu, Shanhong Wan, Ning Kong, Qiang Zhu, Hongtao Zhu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A new class of high temperature lubricant of inorganic alkali metal polyphosphate was developed for hot metal forming, which involved a fundamental knowledge of melt lubrication. At elevated temperature a 55% reduction in friction and a 50% decrease in wear were achieved by the presence of the molten polyphosphate lubrication, as well as the excellent anti-oxidation capability at the rubbing steel/steel interface, which closely correlated with the tribo-induced hierarchical structure at the rubbing interface. This inorganic polyphosphate lubricant can be called a smart polymeric material, which will be an eco-friendly alternative for high temperature applications. This journal is

Modeling Secondary Particle Tracks Generated By High-Energy Protons In Water, Francisco Blanco, Antonio Munoz, Diego T. Almeida, F. Ferreira Da Silva, Paulo Limao-Vieira, Alexey Verkhovtsev, L Ellis-Gibbings, K Krupa, A Traore, G Garcia

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present interaction probability data of low-energy secondary electrons and positrons produced due to the proton impact. The probability distribution functions serve as input data for the Low Energy Particle Track Simulation (LEPTS) approach which allows one to include the effect of low-energy species in medical applications of radiation and in ion-beam cancer therapy, in particular.

Study Of The Consequences Of Co2 Released From High-Pressure Pipelines, Xiong Liu, Ajit R. Godbole, Cheng Lu, Guillaume Michal, Phillip Venton Jan 2015

Study Of The Consequences Of Co2 Released From High-Pressure Pipelines, Xiong Liu, Ajit R. Godbole, Cheng Lu, Guillaume Michal, Phillip Venton

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The development of the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technique requires an understanding of the hazards posed by the operation of high-pressure CO2 pipelines. To allow the appropriate safety precautions to be taken, a comprehensive understanding of the consequences of unplanned CO2 releases is essential before the deployment of CO2 pipelines. In this paper, we present models for the predictions of discharge rate, atmospheric expansion and dispersion due to accidental CO2 releases from high-pressure pipelines. The GERG-2008 Equation of State (EOS) was used in the discharge and expansion models. This enabled more precise 'source strength' predictions. …

The Relationship Between Implicit Beliefs, Anxiety, And Attributional Style In High-Level Soccer Players, Lauren Gardner, Stewart A. Vella, Christopher A. Magee Jan 2015

The Relationship Between Implicit Beliefs, Anxiety, And Attributional Style In High-Level Soccer Players, Lauren Gardner, Stewart A. Vella, Christopher A. Magee

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

This study investigated whether attributional style mediated the relationship between implicit beliefs and competition anxiety. Seventy-two soccer players completed the Conceptions of the Nature of Athletic Ability Questionnaire-Version 2, Sports Competition Anxiety Test, and short form Sports Attributional Style Scale. Entity beliefs were associated with heightened anxiety. Incremental beliefs were associated with lowered anxiety. Uncontrollable and global attributions mediated the relationship between entity beliefs and anxiety. Controllable and specific attributions mediated the relationship between incremental beliefs and anxiety. The social-cognitive model of achievement motivation appears to apply to the sporting domain and may facilitate anxiety and attribution research.

High Rate Serially Concatenated Codes With Low Error Floors, Bo Liu, Sheng Tong, Qinghua Guo, Jun Tong, Jiangtao Xi, Yanguang Yu Jan 2015

High Rate Serially Concatenated Codes With Low Error Floors, Bo Liu, Sheng Tong, Qinghua Guo, Jun Tong, Jiangtao Xi, Yanguang Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Serial concatenation of Hamming codes and an accumulator has been shown to achieve near capacity performance at high code rates. However, these codes usually exhibit poor error floor performance due to their small minimum distances. To overcome this weakness, we propose to replace the outer Hamming codes by product codes constructed from Hamming codes and single-parity-check codes. In this way, the minimum distance of the outer code can be doubled, which is expected to increase the minimum distance of the serially concatenated code and thus to improve error floor performance. Three-dimensional EXIT chart is used for their convergence analysis and …

High Temperature Dislocation Structure And Nbc Precipitation In Three Ni-Fe-Nb-C Model Alloys, Andrii Kostryzhev, Parvez Mannan, Olexandra Marenych Jan 2015

High Temperature Dislocation Structure And Nbc Precipitation In Three Ni-Fe-Nb-C Model Alloys, Andrii Kostryzhev, Parvez Mannan, Olexandra Marenych

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this original work, the dislocation structure and NbC precipitation were investigated in three Ni-based alloys (70Ni-Fe-0.331Nb-0.040C, 70Ni-Fe-0.851Nb-0.114C and 70Ni-Fe-1.420Nb-0.157C, wt%) thermomechanically processed in the temperature range of 1250-1075 °C. The dislocation structure inhomogeneity (dislocation networks and cell walls), which we observed in the middle and high Nb+C alloys, resulted from the dislocation pile-ups in the vicinity of >200 nm NbC particles. The dislocation density around >200 nm particles exceeded the average values by 5-7 times, and that in the cell walls might exceed the average values by 10 times. Twins and stacking faults were observed in all alloys after …

The Use Of Coastal Reservoirs And Spp Strategy To Provide Sufficient High Quality Water To Coastal Communities, Shu-Qing Yang, Samuel Kelly Jan 2015

The Use Of Coastal Reservoirs And Spp Strategy To Provide Sufficient High Quality Water To Coastal Communities, Shu-Qing Yang, Samuel Kelly

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Water quality-induced water shortage is emerging as one of the main threats for the growth of the world's population and economic development, especially for coastal cities in developing nations. This paper discusses how to supply enough sufficiently clean water to such cities using the technologies of coastal reservoirs and wetland pre-treatments, as well as employing the SPP strategy. The so-called coastal reservoir is defined as a freshwater reservoir situated in seawater which sources its water from river runoff; to improve its water quality, a wetland is used to pre-treat the runoff that is potentially polluted by domestic, agricultural and industrial …
