This session will provide a look at how two university libraries have responded to this call for re-centering the library as place through virtual programming and outreach services. Presenters will discuss their experiences and insights with creating new and unique virtual programming across health and wellness, teaching …

Organizational Learning In Libraries At For-Profit Colleges And Universities, Julie Evener Jun 2019

Organizational Learning In Libraries At For-Profit Colleges And Universities, Julie Evener

Education Collection

Despite successful application of organizational learning to enhance services in academic libraries, little is known about organizational learning in libraries of for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs). A quantitative online survey, followed by qualitative interviews, served to assess and explore the use of organizational learning in libraries at FPCUs. Data reflected medium to high levels of organizational learning in the libraries studied, as well as a negative relationship between organizational learning and number of students enrolled. Common themes in the interview responses included external pressures from the FPCUs making it more difficult to implement organizational learning, and the importance of communication. …

Simulation Enhances Soft Skills Among Inter-Professionals Participating In An International Service-Learning Experience To A Resource-Limited Country, Suzanne Trotter, Sharon Dunnivan-Mitchell

Physical Therapy Collection

Soft skills are the hallmark of a master healthcare provider. One of the most effective ways to teach soft skills is through service-learning. Evidence suggests that adding simulation as part of a service-learning team’s pre-departure training (PDT) will better prepare them to resolve ethical and cultural dilemmas plus facilitate soft skills. We hypothesized that simulation could improve soft skills of healthcare providers delivering rehabilitation services on a one-week service-learning experience in Guatemala

A convenience sample of 21 physical and occupational therapy students and clinicians who participated in four 1-hour PDTs were included in this qualitative study using grounded-theory methods. Training …

Organizational Learning In Libraries At For-Profit Colleges And Universities, Julie Evener

Other Topics

There is a gap in knowledge about organizational learning in the libraries of for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs) in the United States. Though for-profit institutions are educating an increasing number of American students, few research studies have focused on the libraries in FPCUs. Academic libraries contribute to student engagement, student learning, and retention; therefore, the effects of improved library services for students at FPCUs may be positive and long lasting.

Serving The Professional Graduate Student: Health Sciences, Julie Evener Oct 2018

Serving The Professional Graduate Student: Health Sciences, Julie Evener

Education Collection

Students pursuing graduate-level degrees for careers in the health sciences have specific, and sometimes unique, needs regarding library resources and information literacy (IL) skills and instruction. The key to these considerations are the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) taught in health science curriculums. EBP, also known as evidence-based medicine or evidence-informed practice, is best defined as “the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients.” The library can help both in providing resources that contain the current best evidence and in teaching graduate health sciences students how to find the …

Innovation In The Library: How To Encourage New Ideas, Create Buy-In, And Serve Our Patrons Better, Julie Evener Dec 2015

Innovation In The Library: How To Encourage New Ideas, Create Buy-In, And Serve Our Patrons Better, Julie Evener

Other Topics

Innovation is a much touted concept in the business world. Libraries, too, have felt the need for continuous innovation as we serve ever-changing needs. Leaders can use principles practiced in business to transform academic libraries into cultures of innovation. In a culture of innovation, employees are engaged in their work and excited about the possibilities of it. Leaders help cultivate creativity by promoting growth mind-sets, rewarding experimentation, and practicing discovery skills. Importantly, library leaders in cultures of innovation hone persuasive abilities to create buy-in for implementing innovations in order to serve users more effectively with dynamic solutions to persistent problems.

Athletic Training Collection

This article discusses the principles and practices that guide psychological intervention with injury, and encourages a psychological approach to injury for clinicians. Part 1 reviews the research literature, and serves as a foundation for the review of clinical practices in part 2. Examination of the research literature highlights 4 areas: (1) psychological factors influencing rehabilitation, (2) social factors affecting rehabilitation, (3) performance concerns among returning athletes, and (4) tools/inventories for assessing psychological readiness to return. A synopsis of an injury intervention plan is provided, and the influence of pain and fear in the rehabilitation process is described.

Information Literacy For Evidence-Based Practice: Creating A Self-Paced Online Course, Julie Evener Oct 2013

Information Literacy For Evidence-Based Practice: Creating A Self-Paced Online Course, Julie Evener

Other Topics

Distance students are often at the disadvantage of not receiving the same interactive information literacy instruction as their on-campus counterparts. The University of St. Augustine library, which supports four completely online degree programs in addition to campus-based programs, created a one credit, self-paced, online course called Information Literacy for Evidence-Based Practice in order to better reach our distance students. Though evidence-based practice (EBP) is a popular concept, studies show that many practitioners are not actually doing it. One reason the practitioners themselves cite is lack of skill in searching the literature. The goal of the credit-course is to help our …

Background:

The influence of self-presentation concerns on the adolescent sport experience has received scant empirical attention. The purpose of this investigation was to prospectively examine the relationship among self-presentational concerns and pre-game affective states among middle and high school aged football players.

Methods:

American football players (n = 112; mean age = 15.57 years) completed a measure of self-presentational concerns (SPSQ, McGowan, et al., 2008) a week prior to the measurement of selected pre-game affective states (i.e., attentiveness, self-assurance, serenity, and fear).

Results:

Regression analyses revealed that concerns about appearing athletically untalented negatively contributed to the significant prediction ( p …

Education Collection

Electronic course reserves serve a vital function in university instruction, enabling students to easily access important published literature in their discipline. While electronic systems have greatly improved the functionality of course reserves and have led to their ubiquitous use on campus, publishers have become more litigious and threaten to erode educational exceptions to copyright law under fair use. This paper reviews recent relevant case law with a view to providing recommendations for best practices for electronic reserves in university libraries that preserve traditional legal exceptions to copyright protections in education. While the courts have often upheld these exceptions, libraries could …
