Modeling Community Risk And Vulnerability To Multiple Natural Hazards: Hillsborough County, Florida, Christopher T. Emrich
Modeling Community Risk And Vulnerability To Multiple Natural Hazards: Hillsborough County, Florida, Christopher T. Emrich
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Multiple hazard risk and vulnerability are two topics that are at the forefront of hazards research that looks at the hazardousness ofplace. However, no definitive framework that encapsulates measures o f both risk and vulnerability into hazards theory has been developed. Indeed, risk and vulnerability have been used interchangeably. Consequently, populations often encounter high risk environments with little understandingofwaystolimitvulnerability. Thesituationisaggravatedbyincreasing populations and concomitant development ofhigh risk areas. Hillsborough County, Florida, is perhaps the archetype ofthis problem, having experienced rapid urban growth while giving scant attention to the hazardousness ofthe environment.
This research, therefore, looks at the hazardousness of place, focusing …

We Are Not Victims: Oral Histories Of Four Mexican-American Women, Carmen Melendez Maayan
We Are Not Victims: Oral Histories Of Four Mexican-American Women, Carmen Melendez Maayan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This ethnographic inquiry focuses on the lives and work off our Mexican- American women who run a center in the Mexican migrant farmworker community in which they live. Through the center, they provide vital services to their community such medical care, immigration assistance, educational and community outreach programs. Via these women's oral histories, this ethnographic work seeks to broaden our understanding of women who are fully aware of their subordinated status in the dominant society yet are not passive victims. By listening to their own voices, we learn how they overcome personal adversity and challenge cultural ideologies. In the process, …

By failing to appropriately treat adults and children with severe mental illness, we incur enormous social costs through payments for disability benefits (Medicaid, SSI, SSDI), increased medical expenses, accidents and suicides, avoidable criminal justice proceedings, lost productivity, and increased need for homeless shelters and services. People who are underinsured are forced by arbitrary caps and limits to increasingly rely on the public sector. By providing parity for mental health, Florida will bring mental health into the mainstream of health care and become a leader in dispelling the prejudice that surrounds treatment of persons with severe mental illness.

Comparing Outcomes Of Major Models Of Police Responses To Mental Health Emergencies, Randy Borum
Comparing Outcomes Of Major Models Of Police Responses To Mental Health Emergencies, Randy Borum
Randy Borum
OBJECTIVE: The study compared three models of police responses to incidents involving people thought to have mental illnesses to determine how often specialized professionals responded and how often they were able to resolve cases without arrest. METHODS: Three study sites representing distinct approaches to police handling of incidents involving persons with mental illness were examined-Birmingham, Alabama; and Knoxville and Memphis, Tennessee. At each site, records were examined for approximately 100 police dispatch calls for "emotionally disturbed persons" to examine the extent to which the specially trained professionals responded. To determine differences in case dispositions, records were also examined for 100 …

Criteria Against Ourselves, Art Bochner
Criteria Against Ourselves, Art Bochner
Art Bochner
In the social sciences, we usually think of criteria as culture-free standards that stand apart from human subjectivity and value. The author argues in this article, however, that conflicts over which criteria to apply usually boil down to differences in values that are contingent on human choices. The demand for criteria reflects the desire to contain freedom, limit possibilities, and resist change. Ultimately, all standards of evaluation rest on a research community’s agreement to comply with theirownhumanly developed conventions. The author ends by considering the personal standards that he applies to works that fall under the new rubric of poetic …

Creating Local Bibliographic Databases: New Tools For Evidence-Based Health Care, Jeremiah H. Sable, Beth G. Carlin, James E. Andrews, Maryellen C. Sievert

The Internet has created new opportunities for librarians to present literature search results to clinicians. In order to take full advantage of these opportunities, libraries need to create locally maintained bibliographic databases. A simple method of creating a local bibliographic database and publishing it on the Web is described. The method uses off-the-shelf software and requires minimal programming. A hedge search strategy for outcome studies of clinical process interventions is created, and Ovid is used to search MEDLINE. The search results are saved and imported into EndNote libraries. The citations are modified, exported to a Microsoft Access database, and published …

The Printed Book: Still In Need Of Ccd, Anna H. Perrault
School of Information Faculty Publications
The present state of the printed book in the "national collection" or commons of resources owned by U.S. academic libraries is reviewed. The status of collecting of foreign language monographs is emphasized. The future of collecting printed materials is considered in the context of an international information commons and cooperation beyond the North American academic library community.
