The Relationship Between Research Method And Visual Display: A Study Of Conference Proceedings In The Field Of Knowledge Organization, Alon Friedman
School of Information Faculty Publications
Introduction. Research method refers to how to conduct research, how to measure progress, and what constitutes success. Visualisation has become the platform for communicating research findings according to Friedman and Smiraglia . Knowledge organization aims to organize knowledge and many researchers employ visualisation in their findings. So, what was the relationship between research methods and visual display when researchers presented their findings?
Method. All conference proceedings of the International Society of Knowledge Organizationfrom 1990 to 2010 are examined, including 256 visualisations found in the 609 articles. A random sample of 50 visualisations is then analysed to determine the …

This collection includes a variety of underground newspapers, various pamphlets and flyers, and various documents related to political activities, social justice, American involvement in the Vietnamese conflict, and other events during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Collected by William “Bill†Hamilton, a 1995 graduate of the University of South Florida, these materials illustrate the topics of discussion from that time and how the alternative and underground press characterized the rapidly changing social landscape. Most of the underground papers and miscellaneous documents originated from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Mr. Hamilton donated these papers to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library …

This collection consists of more than 450 panels of the “Muggs and Skeeter” cartoon drawn by Wallace Bond “Wally” Bishop, a longtime resident of St. Petersburg. Wally Bishop and his wife, Louise C. Bishop became leaders in a variety of social circles and cultural organizations in the greater St. Petersburg area. In the late 1930s, they bought the elaborate mansion constructed by C. Perry Snell on Brightwaters Boulevard at the mouth of Coffee Pot Bayou. In Louise’s later life, her profound concern for ethics in undergraduate education led to the establishment of the Bishop Center for Ethical Leadership and Civic …

Librarians As Wikipedians: From Library History To “Librarianship And Human Rights”, Kathleen De La Peña Mccook
Librarians As Wikipedians: From Library History To “Librarianship And Human Rights”, Kathleen De La Peña Mccook
School of Information Faculty Publications
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia built collaboratively using wiki software, is the most visited reference site on the web. Only 270 librarians identify as Wikipedians of 21,431,799 Wikipedians with named accounts. This needs to change. Understanding Wikipedia is essential to teaching information literacy and editing Wikipedia is essential to foster successful information-seeking behavior. Librarians who become skilled Wikipedians will maintain the centrality of librarianship to knowledge management in the 21st century—especially through active participation in crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing is the online participation model that makes use of the collective intelligence of online communities for specific purposes in this case creating and editing …

Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items
Emil August Nordstrom served as an engineer for the City of St. Petersburg, later as a partner in an architectural and engineering firm in St. Petersburg, and also as executive director of the Housing Authority of St. Petersburg. Born in 1883 or 1884, Nordstrom passed away in St. Petersburg on August 26, 1973, and was survived by his daughter, Dorothy King. This small scrapbook contains clippings and information about Nordstrom’s engineering work and structures he was involved with in the City of St. Petersburg between 1926 and 1937. This scrapbook includes a compilation of newspaper clippings from a variety of sources and covers the mid-1930s. Approximately one-half of these clippings focus on stories related to St. Petersburg or Florida more broadly, while the remainder cover events as broad as English royalty to the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-1936). The compiler of the materials in this scrapbook is unknown, though the name “Billy Dean” appears on this document. It is uncertain as to whether this was an actual proper name, or whether it was a nickname or pseudonym. Jen Runyon donated this scrapbook and another one that captures the activities …

Communication, Class And Concentric Media Practices: Developing A Contemporary Rubric, Todd Wolfson, Peter N. Funke
Communication, Class And Concentric Media Practices: Developing A Contemporary Rubric, Todd Wolfson, Peter N. Funke
Government and International Affairs Faculty Publications
Understanding class as a process of self-making in relation to a particular, historical form of capitalism, in this article we argue that media and communication (from face-to-face and old mediums such as radio to internet-powered tools) must be conceptualized as an emerging structural dimension for class formation. Based on ethnographic fieldwork on the Media Mobilizing Project in Philadelphia, a community-based media and communications infrastructure and a network of organizations across the region, we develop a conceptual approach we call concentric practices, which provides us with a framework of how contemporary class formation is occurring through the use of media and …

On 13 September 2013, William C. Ballard—a former member of the Fisher & Sauls law firm—deposited a collection of personal correspondence and other documents related to the management and operation of the Times Publishing Company with Special Collections and University Archives, Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. These documents, held by the firm since approximately 15 June 1978, the date of Nelson Poynter’s death, cover the years primarily from 1936 through 1959 and may have been helpful in establishing intra-familial relationships regarding the St. Petersburg Times [now Tampa Bay Times], St. Petersburg Evening Independent, and other publishing and operational entities of the …

Earl Weir, a longtime St. Petersburg resident who now lives outside of the area, originally donated materials related to his family’s history and the Tampa Bay region in 2012. Many items from the original accession were digitized versions of home movies, and they were received in multiple installments. Some artifacts were also included in the original accession, such as an electric clock from Webb’s City, a longtime department store located in St. Petersburg. Mr. Weir donated a second accession of items in early 2014 while visiting the Poynter Library. This finding aid enumerates materials from this second accession only, comprised …
