The Significance Of Aspirations Among Unmarried Adolescent Mothers, Naomi Farber Dec 1989

The Significance Of Aspirations Among Unmarried Adolescent Mothers, Naomi Farber

Faculty and Staff Publications

Adolescent out of wedlock childbearing is associated with persistent poverty, particularly among urban underclass black youth. This article examines findings on the educational and vocational aspirations of teen mothers, how they are associated with class and race and how they may influence economic dependence. The analysis suggests the importance of distinguishing between poor teens' socially normative aspirations and their ability to fulfill those aspirations.

The Santee Canal Sanctuary - Part Ii, Mark M. Newell Sep 1989

The Santee Canal Sanctuary - Part Ii, Mark M. Newell

Publications

The Old Santee Canal Sanctuary encompasses the last vestiges of a once great industrial enterprise, a scant mile or more of a 23 mile long canal, the first of its kind in America. When this archaeological project was first contemplated it was not expected to yield much in terms of resources and data.
Part I of this project, the archaeological survey of Biggin Creek and the canal, revealed the existence of an extremely rich resource - the tide-lock, several vessels, earthen works and the remains of the tide-lock gates.
Much of Part II of the project, on which this paper …

Job Displacement, Relative Wage Changes, And Duration Of Unemployment, John T. Addison, Pedro Portugal Jul 1989

Job Displacement, Relative Wage Changes, And Duration Of Unemployment, John T. Addison, Pedro Portugal

Faculty Publications

Using special CPS data on displaced workers, this article investigates the wage consequences of job displacement in a framework that emphasizes the effects of past job duration(s) and unemployment duration(s) on postdisplacement wages. Our model also attempts to take account of the simultaneity between unemployment duration and the postdisplacement wage. It is found that duration strongly reduces subsequent earnings and that considerable overstatement of the loss in firm-specific training investments is implied by conventional routes to measuring wage losses.

The Santee Canal Sanctuary - Part I, Joe J. Simmons Iii, Mark M. Newell Feb 1989

The Santee Canal Sanctuary - Part I, Joe J. Simmons Iii, Mark M. Newell

Publications

A proposed recreational and environment and historical interpretive park has been planned by the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (PRT) jointly with the Santee Cooper Public Service Authority for the land along the west side of the Tailrace Canal extending between US Route 52 and Stoney Landing in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The Santee Canal Sanctuary, as it has been named, encompasses the southernmost ca. 2.0km (1.25mi) of the abandoned Santee Canal and Biggin Creek which essentially bisect the property longitudinally.
Development of the park and related construction activities dictated that archaeological investigations be executed. A …

The G. Ross Roy Collection Of Robert Burns, Burnsiana & Scottish Poetry At Thomas Cooper Library, University Of South Carolina, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

With the addition in 1989 of the G. Ross Roy Collection, the University of South Carolina's Thomas Cooper Library became a major international center for research across the broad range of Scottish literature. The core of the Roy Collection is (in the words of a recent visitor) "the best Burns collection in North America." Around that core are holdings in depth for many other major (and minor) Scottish writers, from the Renaissance to the present day, supported by the resources of a nationally-ranked research library.

Union Effects On Productivity, Profits, And Growth - Has The Long Run Arrived?, John T. Addison, Barry T. Hirsch Jan 1989

Union Effects On Productivity, Profits, And Growth - Has The Long Run Arrived?, John T. Addison, Barry T. Hirsch

Faculty Publications

This article interprets literature examining union effects on economic performance. Production function studies indicate small overall union impacts on productivity; positive effects, where they exist, appear to result from management response to decreased profit expectations and from a natural selection process. Lower profitability among unionized firms is well established; more interesting is the possibility that unions appropriate quasi rents deriving from long-lived tangible and intangible capital. the connection between unions, investment behavior, and productivity growth emerges as a particularly fruitful line of empirical inquiry, although it does not encourage a sanguine view of unionism's long-run impact.
