The following paper is a study of the numeral systems of North American Indian tribes. Not only the basic systems of counting are considered but, also, the recording devices, the words used for basic numbers with their concrete meanings, "magic" or "pattern" numbers and their relationship, if any, to the system of numeration. It will be well here to outline briefly Keresan grammar before embarking on a more detailed technical discussion. I do not and cannot hope to present a full grammar of a highly complex linguistic system. There are many points in the grammar of the language which must remain obscure or at which I can merely suggest.
