Functional Requirements Specification For Archival Asset Management: Identification And Integration Of Essential Properties Of Services Oriented Architecture Products, Jon Wheeler, Karl Benedict Sep 2015

Functional Requirements Specification For Archival Asset Management: Identification And Integration Of Essential Properties Of Services Oriented Architecture Products, Jon Wheeler, Karl Benedict

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The complexity and size of geospatial data can constrain the capabilities of service providers and create risks to the long term preservation and archiving of valuable information assets. While services oriented architectures such as the Earth Data Analysis Center's Geographic Storage, Transformation and Retrieval Engine (GSToRE1) facilitate increased use and impact of geospatial data by mitigating these complexities through the development of dynamic applications and interfaces, such services can often be primarily focused on the maintenance and delivery of only the most current versions of geospatial data that may nonetheless possess significant historical, cultural, or scientific value. Actions and documentation …

Reviewing Political Controversy: Book Reviewers Assess Childrens Literature Set In Israel/Palestine, Christina M. Desai Jul 2015

Reviewing Political Controversy: Book Reviewers Assess Childrens Literature Set In Israel/Palestine, Christina M. Desai

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Abstract Because book reviewers influence which books are purchased for libraries and schools, it is important to understand the explicit or implicit criteria they employ. Reviewer practices with books on politically controversial topics set in Israel/Palestine and available to a US audience often reflect partisan views, with the dominant political discourse favouring the Israeli position, although this is far from ubiquitous. While some reviews avoid addressing the books' politics, others are decidedly partisan. Many base their evaluations on their estimation of the degree of hope and political balance achieved in the works, yet these expectations are applied selectively. Some expect …

The lack of consistent wide-spread media coverage of recent events in North America involving violence against Native Americans and African Americans in the U.S., missing and murdered indigenous women, led the authors to a thoughtful discussion about the similar and parallel issues shared by our people. Although the deaths of Michael Brown (August 9, 2014, Ferguson, MO), Eric Garner (July 17, 2014, NY), and Sandra Bland (July 13, 2015, TX) were nationally covered news events; the deaths of Misty Upham, Blackfeet (October 5, 2014, WA); Native American activist Rexdale Henry, Choctaw (July 14, 2015, MS), and Christina Tahhahwah, Comanche (November …

Collection Revitalization At The University Of New Mexico Libraries, Samuel E. Sisneros

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This article discusses a project that took an early archival manuscript collection that was poorly described and catalogued, and underused and revitalized it (in a sense recovered a lost collection) by re-describing it and digitizing material from the collection for better (new) public access.

Data Services And The Performing Arts, Amy Jackson, Jon Wheeler, Todd Quinn Jan 2015

Data Services And The Performing Arts, Amy Jackson, Jon Wheeler, Todd Quinn

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In the academic world, research is primarily seen through the scientific approach of collecting and interpreting scientific or numeric data, or the humanistic approach of comparing and interpreting texts. However, in the performing arts fields, academics see themselves on a spectrum between scholar and artist. Artistic scholarly research activities are often driven by the same requirements as humanities research. However, as artists, research often takes the form of listening to or watching performances. In this approach, performances and recordings are research data to these academics. How can libraries support this method of research? What are the implications for data curation …

Let The Sun Shine In: Promoting Civic Engagement With Sunshine Week, Cindy Pierard, Josefine Smith, Caitlin Wells

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Sunshine Week is a national effort to promote the importance of open government and freedom of information. Although originally begun as a news media initiative, it has grown to include community groups, libraries, schools, governments, and others who are committed to civic engagement and access to information. For academic libraries, Sunshine Week offers opportunities for forge collaborations with campus and community partners, and to connect programming with broader student learning goals. This chapter makes the case for Sunshine Week as a mechanism for bringing together campus and community groups around issues of common concern, either as a standalone effort or …

Sampling Strategies For Finite Population Using Auxiliary Information, Florentin Smarandache, Rajesh Singh Jan 2015

Sampling Strategies For Finite Population Using Auxiliary Information, Florentin Smarandache, Rajesh Singh

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The present book aims to present some improved estimators using auxiliary and attribute information in case of simple random sampling and stratified random sampling and in some cases when non-response is present. This volume is a collection of five papers, written by seven co-authors (listed in the order of the papers): Sachin Malik, Rajesh Singh, Florentin Smarandache, B. B. Khare, P. S. Jha, Usha Srivastava and Habib Ur. Rehman. The first and the second papers deal with the problem of estimating the finite population mean when some information on two auxiliary attributes are available. In the third paper, problems related …

Uncertainty Communication Solution In Neutrosophic Key, Florentin Smarandache, Bianca Tedorescu, Mirela Teodorescu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This study is the first step of a research that points out the solving of uncertainties in process analysis. The research is based on Neutrosophy Theory (Smarandache, 1995), a new concept of states treatment with a generous applicability to sciences, like artificial intelligence (Vladareanu et al, 2014).

Α-Discounting Method For Multi-Criteria Decision Making (Α-D Mcdm), Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book we introduce a new procedure called αDiscounting Method for Multi-Criteria Decision Making (α-D MCDM), which is as an alternative and extension of Saaty’s Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). It works for any number of preferences that can be transformed into a system of homogeneous linear equations. A degree of consistency (and implicitly a degree of inconsistency) of a decision-making problem are defined. α-D MCDM is afterwards generalized to a set of preferences that can be transformed into a system of linear and/or non-linear homogeneous and/or nonhomogeneous equations and/or inequalities. Many consistent, weak inconsistent, and strong inconsistent examples are …
