Library Faculty Publications

Purpose

Best Practices for Cataloging DVD-video and Blu-ray Discs Using RDA and MARC21 builds upon the work of the 2008 Guide to Cataloging DVD and Blu-ray Discs Using AACR2r and MARC21, which in turn updated the 2002 Guide to Cataloging DVDs Using AACR2r Chapters 7 and 9 created by the DVD Cataloging Task Force of OLAC.

The focus of this new document is to provide a set of “best practice” recommendations rather than a step-by-step instruction manual for cataloging DVD-video and Blu-ray Discs. One reason for this shift is that RDA cataloging practice is far from settled, particularly in regard …

Developmentalism: Learning As The Basis For Evaluating Information, Mark Lenker Oct 2017

Developmentalism: Learning As The Basis For Evaluating Information, Mark Lenker

Library Faculty Publications

The developmentalist conception of information’s value makes learning the central consideration for evaluating information. Following philosopher Richard Kraut, this article argues that developmentalism provides an important complement to prevalent methods of teaching the evaluation of information. These methods emphasize (a) trustworthiness—for example, CRAAP (currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose) and CARS (credibility, accuracy, reasonableness, and support) and (b) the use of information in an argument—for example, Joseph Bizup’s BEAM (background, exhibit, argument, method). The neglected link between evaluation and learning is crucial for early college researchers; otherwise, students can easily just find sources to “back up” their existing opinions. Learning-centered …

Evaluating The Term ‘Disorders Of Sex Development’: A Multidisciplinary Debate, Natalie Delimata Phd, Margaret Simmonds Phd, Michelle O'Brien Msc, Georgiann Davis Phd, Richard Auchus Md, Phd, Karen Lin-Su Md

Sociology Faculty Research

In 2014, almost 10 years after the 2005 International Consensus Conference on Intersex in Chicago,1 one of the conference co-organisers, under the auspices of a number of international paediatric endocrinology societies, launched the Global DSD Update to assess progress. A consortium of fourteen work groups conducted online/email discussions to explore each of the fourteen key topics, one of which was use of the controversial medical umbrella term ‘Disorders of Sex Development (DSD)’. The initial key question for Work Group 1 (referred to hereafter as WG1) was to reconsider the nomenclature. Nineteen individuals from a variety of professional backgrounds, including medical …

Creating A Virtuous Circle Of Student Engagement With The Tech Corner, Brian R. Shuck, Susan B. Wainscott, Jennifer Church-Duran, Darcy C. Del Bosque

Library Faculty Publications

While many academic libraries have followed the public library lead in developing maker-spaces, not all libraries have the money or space to dedicate to such large-scale operations. This case study explores a different approach to engaging users with new technology and investigates how to support their creativity without a costly investment in space and staffing. It demonstrates not only how students can be provided a virtual space to explore technology equipment, but also how their opinions can be leveraged for growing the collection and creating training materials.

The Impact Of Education And R&D Investment On Regional Economic Growth, Youngjin Woo, Euijune Kim, Jaewon Lim Apr 2017

The Impact Of Education And R&D Investment On Regional Economic Growth, Youngjin Woo, Euijune Kim, Jaewon Lim

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of education and R&D investment on regional economic growth in South Korea. We develop a simultaneous model of production, human capital accumulation, migration, population and physical capital investment of two regions: the Seoul Metropolitan Area and the rest of Korea. We decompose the regional growth path into a quality path and a quantity path to identify how regional economies grow and run simulations to evaluate alternative policies in terms of effectiveness and adaptability. The impact of education and R&D investment on regional growth in the rest of Korea is only …

Integrating Spatial Working Memory And Remote Memory: Interactions Between The Medial Prefrontal Cortex And Hippocampus, Ryan A. Wirt, James M. Hyman Apr 2017

Integrating Spatial Working Memory And Remote Memory: Interactions Between The Medial Prefrontal Cortex And Hippocampus, Ryan A. Wirt, James M. Hyman

Psychology Faculty Research

In recent years, two separate research streams have focused on information sharing between the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus (HC). Research into spatial working memory has shown that successful execution of many types of behaviors requires synchronous activity in the theta range between the mPFC and HC, whereas studies of memory consolidation have shown that shifts in area dependency may be temporally modulated. While the nature of information that is being communicated is still unclear, spatial working memory and remote memory recall is reliant on interactions between these two areas. This review will present recent evidence that shows that …

Changing The Focus Of Urban Transport From Congestion To Access, Jeffrey Gutman Mar 2017

Changing The Focus Of Urban Transport From Congestion To Access, Jeffrey Gutman

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

The traditional approach of urban transport planners has been to focus on the reduction of traffic congestion. More recently, with the growth of cities worldwide and the ever-present challenge of congestion, transport and urban planners have started to focus on the concept of access as the ultimate goal. How can we ensure and enhance access to jobs, education, commerce, and other services by all segments of the population? This requires a more complementary effort by transport planners and urban planners as well as finance and fiscal experts. The lecture will follow this shift in emphasis, the opportunities it poses, and …

The Relationship Of Education And Acculturation With Vigorous Intensity Leisure Time Physical Activity By Gender In Latinos, Erick B. Lopez, Takashi Yamashita Feb 2017

The Relationship Of Education And Acculturation With Vigorous Intensity Leisure Time Physical Activity By Gender In Latinos, Erick B. Lopez, Takashi Yamashita

Sociology Faculty Research

Objectives: Latinos have poorer health outcomes among certain conditions (e.g. diabetes, obesity, mental health) compared to non-Latino Whites in the U.S., in part due to difference in the amount of physical activity, which are heavily influenced by sociocultural factors such as educational attainment and acculturation. Vigorous-intensity leisure time physical activity (VLTPA) may provide health benefits with a shorter amount of time than moderate-to-light physical activity. However, VLTPA has been significantly understudied compared to LTPA in general. The purpose of this study is to examine the associations between educational attainment, acculturation, and VLTPA by gender among Latino adults in the U.S. …

Dream Hoarders: The Dangerous Separation Of The American Upper Middle Class, Richard Reeves Feb 2017

Dream Hoarders: The Dangerous Separation Of The American Upper Middle Class, Richard Reeves

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

This lecture blends economics, philosophy and policy analysis to examine the growing gap between the upper middle class (broadly the top 20 percent) and the majority of Americans. In terms of dollars, but also education and skills, social capital, health, lifestyle and leisure attitude and zip code - not just by standard of living, but a way of life. The inheritance of upper middle class status in the next generation results from a growing gap in human capital formation, or ‘market merit’, and from a degree of ‘opportunity hoarding’. What changes are required to ensure that the American Dream is …

Pk11195 Increases Anxiety Like Behaviors In The Open Field, Audrey Donald, Dustin Hines Jan 2017

Pk11195 Increases Anxiety Like Behaviors In The Open Field, Audrey Donald, Dustin Hines

AANAPISI Poster Presentations

Anxiety is one of the most common mental illnesses in the US. Signaling between regions of the brain can be corrupted causing stress related behaviors. Medications that help treat these behaviors target GABA receptors in an inhibitory manner. However, these medications only work for a period of time. The likelihood of being free of these medications becomes uncertain. Another approach is a protein called translocator protein. TSPO, once known as peripheral benzodiazepine receptor is known to mediate anxiety related behaviors through the synthesis of neurosteriods. While TSPO may mediate these behaviors, its mechanism is not well known. Ligand PK11195 was …

Prescribing Change For Minority Students: Diagnosing Inequalities In Science Education In The Clark County School District, Brianna K. Cotter Jan 2017

Prescribing Change For Minority Students: Diagnosing Inequalities In Science Education In The Clark County School District, Brianna K. Cotter

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

Promoting entry of underrepresented minority groups into the allied health professions is paramount to developing a balanced workforce that reflects the needs of an evolving populace. Currently, significant underrepresentation of racial minority groups in health and science related fields correlates with data showing an overrepresentation of black and Latino students in Title 1 (at-risk and low-income) schools. Data suggest that students who are exposed to “higher quality” science education, such as “hands on” experiences, have increased interest in pursuing a health or science related career. These findings prompt the hypothesis that Title 1 schools face inequalities in their science education …

Barbie Doesn't Have Bruises: Gendered Images Of Anxiety And Avoidant Attachment Relationships In Film, Claudia G. Chiang-Lopez Jan 2017

Barbie Doesn't Have Bruises: Gendered Images Of Anxiety And Avoidant Attachment Relationships In Film, Claudia G. Chiang-Lopez

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

Viewers’ interpretations of romantic relationships portrayed between those with anxious and avoidant attachments can affect their opinions on what constitutes appropriate relationship behavior. I conducted a literature review on media impacts and offer an interpretation of the implications of the language used to describe characters, relationships and characters’ ends. The films studied - Sunset Boulevard, Sid and Nancy, and The Hustler - showed a pattern where in a relationship between an anxious and an avoidant character, the anxious character was punished, absorbed by their relationship, abandoned, trapped in their life, and cut off from the world. Viewers watch films to …
