Some of you may recall that at last year's Fall FDLP Conference, Professor Charles Seavey (University of Missouri, School of Information Science and Learning Technologies) participated in a panel presentation about the future of depository libraries, and he remarked that "any library can be a depository." During the 1986-87 school year, the University of Nebraska at Omaha/Omaha Public Schools (UNO/OPS) Liaison Committee requested a study to determine how high school graduates from the Omaha Public Schools were progressing in their college careers at UNO. The author was asked to work with Paul Malcom of the Research Department of Omaha Public Schools to determine how the study might be conducted. Possible research questions were shared with the committee. The author met with Malcom to obtain lists of names of high school graduates.

Alumni were asked to indicate their reasons for attending UNO, to rate various dimensions of the university, and to rate the importance of their UNO educations to their careers and lives. In 1972 the Goodrich Amendment to the state appropriation for the University of Nebraska at Omaha gave the University an "unparalleled opportunity" to develop further its educational offerings and services to students from low-income backgrounds. The intent of the amendment was to make funds available "for a program to get economically deprived young people in and through UNO." Named for State Senator Glenn Goodrich who introduced the legislation, the program was designed to provide an intellectually stimulating academic course of study augmented by whatever supportive services were needed. This study was done in cooperation with the UNO Alumni Association for the purpose of obtaining information regarding the impact of UNO alumni on the University. This report analyzes data on the participation of alumni in various events, enrollment in courses, and utilization of campus facilities. These data were gathered by a telephone survey of 713 UNO alumni in Nebraska.

While student enrollment has declined in most public and private colleges in Nebraska, the University of Nebraska at Omaha has experienced substantial growth over the past five years. From 1968 to 1972, UNO gained a total of 2,329 students; an annual growth rate of 5.4 percent (see Tables I, II, and III). During this period, the number of full-time students enrolled at UNO increased at an annual rate of 4.0 percent while part-time enrollment increased at an annual rate of 7.1 percent.
