Patterns, Collaboration, Practice: Algorithms As Editing For Historic Periodicals, Elizabeth Lorang

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches

This presentation positions my recent work on the algorithmic “discovery” of poetic material in historic newspapers within the contexts of my various roles as an editor of periodical literature and also consider how duplicative processes and algorithms encode principles and values and function as editorial acts. Ultimately, I hope to pose a range of questions to prompt discussion around the place (or not) of machine learning in identifying and selecting texts and bodies of work; what ideas we’re actually exploring/are able to explore when we enlist technology in stages of this work; and the stakes of these activities, whether human …

Mets For The Cultural Heritage Community: A Literature Review, Sharon Cheslow

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard) is an XML-based, data communication standard used for digital collections in cultural heritage institutions, including libraries, archives, and museums, and maintained by the Library of Congress. Recent articles have been written for those in the cultural heritage community who may find METS beneficial. Even so, the uses of METS are still being discovered in terms of best practices and interoperability. One of the main issues with METS is how it can be used with external schemas such as MODS, PREMIS, or Dublin Core. This paper includes a brief description of METS as a wrapper …

Open access to scholarly content is increasing, and will continue to do so. This phenomenon is driving the economics of publishing to change dramatically. The question is: what will the economics of open access look like when this correction settles into a sustainable model? I will cover some of the ideas that have recently been articulated by economists, information professionals and others regarding retooling the evolving publishing business model, and will present some proposed solutions to the problem of “who is going to pay for it?”
