The Words You Brought Us: Digital Lexicon Of The Recognized American Indian Treaties [Article], Charles D. Bernholz, Brian Pytlik Zillig, Cokie G. Anderson

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Machine readable files of the complete corpus of recognized American Indian treaties, derived from Charles Kappler’s multi-volume Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties and a few additional sources, were obtained from the Oklahoma State University Library Electronic Publishing Center and converted for text analysis with TokenX, a web application developed at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Center for Digital Research in the Humanities. The analysis and visualization capabilities of TokenX reveal the diversity of the terms found in these 375 treaties, and the observed frequencies offer a prospect upon legal thought of the times and upon the vocabulary used to express the …

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Like many research universities, the University of Minnesota (UMN), and its Libraries, attempts to understand the nature and intensity of data produced by its researchers, and address the management and stewardship of its institutional research output. The recent activities of the Libraries, in support of and in conjunction with campus-wide efforts, illustrate a set of approaches that show the Libraries to be at the watershed, integrated into and contributing leadership to the growing river of campus-wide exploration and planning of cyberinfrastructure needs. This brief article highlights the hiring of the “science librarian cohort,” the Libraries’ study concerning the needs and …

Web-Based Citation Management Compared To Endnote: Options For Medical Sciences, Melissa Gomis, Carole Gall, Frances A. Brahmi

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The authors of this article analyzed the differences in output when searching MEDLINE direct and MEDLINE via citation management software, EndNoteX1®, EndNoteWeb®, and RefWorks. Several searches were performed on Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed directly. These searches were compared against the same searches conducted in Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed using the search features in EndNote X1, EndNote Web, and RefWorks. Findings indicated that for in-depth research, users should search the databases directly rather than through the citation management software interface. The search results indicated it would be appropriate to search databases via citation management software for citation …

The Palmer And Stevens “Usual And Accustomed Places” Treaties In The Opinions Of The Courts, Charles D. Bernholz, Robert Weiner

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

One hundred fifty years ago, Joel Palmer, as Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Oregon Territory, and Isaac I. Stevens, as Governor and Superintendent of Indian Affairs of the Washington Territory, negotiated a series of treaties with tribes of the Pacific Northwest. These 10 instruments have affected the gathering rights of tribes and of others in this area and throughout the United States and have generated a substantial amount of litigation. This article reports on the 512 citations to these specific documents in 354 opinions, between the years 1874 and 2005, in various jurisdictions ranging from territorial courts to the …

Interlibrary Loan Patron Satisfaction At The Wichita State University Libraries, Ted Naylor, Judith A. Wolfe

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

In 2004, the Wichita State University (WSU) interlibrary loan services completed a study of currently available interlibrary loan software. Based upon the results of the study, the library chose the Interlibrary Loan Internet Accessible database (ILLiad). After implementation, individual training was offered to patrons. In 2006, staff decided to survey patrons' satisfaction. The general purpose of the survey was to determine whether users had accepted the new system, to measure satisfaction with turnaround time, delivery method and the print quality and usefulness of the received material. This article contains a brief description of interlibrary loan operations at WSU, a review …

Adjusting American Indian Treaties: A Guide To Supplemental Article And Supplementary Treaty Citations From Opinions Of The Federal, State, And Territorial Court Systems, Charles D. Bernholz Jul 2008

Adjusting American Indian Treaties: A Guide To Supplemental Article And Supplementary Treaty Citations From Opinions Of The Federal, State, And Territorial Court Systems, Charles D. Bernholz

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Supplemental articles and supplementary treaties were used as tools to modify American Indian treaties. In general, supplemental articles were adjustments to the parameters of a treaty, frequently made as quickly as the same – or the next – day of negotiations, whereas the task of a supplementary treaty was to affect the conditions created in a previous treaty(s).

As the law of the land, these materials have been referenced in the opinions of the federal, state, and territorial court systems. This article identifies those 80 documents – a combination of 39 initial treaties and their 41 supplements – cited in …

The Words You Brought Us: A Digital Lexicon Of The Recognized American Indian Treaties--Website Announcement & Link, Charles D. Bernholz, Brian L. Pytlik Zillig, Cokie G. Anderson

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Text analysis is a rapidly growing endeavor within the digital world. The development of effective tools will accelerate progress in this area and, simultaneously, unveil aspects of selected materials that may never have been previously studied.

This article introduces TokenX, a text visualization and analysis tool that will expedite such examinations. The use that may be derived from its deployment is demonstrated through the creation and assessment of the two lexicon corpora of American Indian treaties made with the federal government (N = 368), and of those documents formed during the earlier British occupation (N = 7). Token frequency tables …

Chat & Instant Messaging For Reference Services: A Selected Bibliography, Tracy Bicknell-Holmes May 2008

Chat & Instant Messaging For Reference Services: A Selected Bibliography, Tracy Bicknell-Holmes

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The amount of literature that has been published on virtual reference is staggering, and what has been published on web-based chat and instant messaging (im) as vehicles for reference is voluminous. Although from the quotes above and much of the literature that has been written, you might get the impression that offering reference services via chat/im is a “no-brainer”. As Ben Chan (2005) argues, libraries must cater to “the increasing number of users who prefer to access information outside the physical library’s boundaries, at any time of the day or night.” He sees the virtual library and virtual librarians as …

Academic Rank Of Authors Publishing In Open Access Journals, Elaine Maytag Nowick May 2008

Academic Rank Of Authors Publishing In Open Access Journals, Elaine Maytag Nowick

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Abstract: When deciding where to publish their research results, faculty take into consideration factors such as the prestige and readership of journals. The weight a journal article will carry is particularly a concern for pre-tenured faculty members. Previous research has indicated that some faculty members may have some concerns about publishing in Open Access journals because of a perceived lack of rigor and reputation of Open Access titles. In this study, the academic rank of authors publishing in Open Access and commercial scholarly journals was compared. Most authors in both Open Access and For-fee journals were full professors. There was …

The Subject Specialist Librarian’S Role In Providing Distance Learning Services, Mary Cassner, Kate E. Adams

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Subject specialist librarians play a role in providing resources and services to distance students. The authors surveyed subject librarians and distance librarians, examining how and to what extent subject librarians provide service to distance learners.

The Guidelines for Distance Learning Library Services (Association of College and Research Libraries [ACRL], 2004) state that it is the responsibility of the originating post-secondary institution to meet the teaching, learning, and research needs of distance students and distance faculty. Within the institution, the library has primary responsibility for distance learning library services. While the guidelines include a section that outlines the role and activities …

The Changing Landscape Of Contemporary Cataloging, Sue Ann Gardner Feb 2008

The Changing Landscape Of Contemporary Cataloging, Sue Ann Gardner

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Intended to contribute to the current dialogue about how the emerging information environment is impacting cataloging issues, this survey paper covers a broad range of topics, such as how search engines compare with integrated library systems, and includes some thoughts on how cataloging processes may evolve to continue to remain relevant. The author suggests that there is a need for significant changes in integrated library system interfaces and infrastructures as well as some changes in cataloging practice. The value of descriptive vs. nondescriptive elements in the catalog record and some pros and cons of the MARC format are covered. doi:10.1300/J104v45n04_06

An Architectural Tour Of Historic Unl, Kay Logan-Peters Jan 2008

An Architectural Tour Of Historic Unl, Kay Logan-Peters

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

This website illustrates with text and images the dramatic physical development of Nebraska's largest academic institution, the University of Nebraska, and the people who committed their lives to it. This website is devoted in particular to the growth of the Lincoln campuses, now known as City and East.

Much of the information contained in this site is available elsewhere, but it requires a determined researcher to track down the parts that make up the whole. Architectural records are contained at the University's Facilities Management department, other records are held within various files in the University Archives, embedded within the Board …

"Curious Survivals": The Letters Of Willa Cather, Andrew Jewell Jan 2008

"Curious Survivals": The Letters Of Willa Cather, Andrew Jewell

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Last winter, when hundreds of letters written by Willa Cather were donated to the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, the world got its first glimpse of a significant unread text of one of the United States' most accomplished authors. These letters, written over four decades to Cather's brother Roscoe and his family, are remarkable artifacts: meditations on the writing process, anxious descriptions of new ideas, celebrations of professional success, solicitations for financial advice, and gripes about family squabbles. They reveal details of complex and intense familial relationships that Cather's biographers have not understood before, and they provide new details about the …

American Indian Treaties In The Courts Of Claims: A Guide To Treaty Citations From Opinions Of The United States Courts Of Claims, Charles D. Bernholz, Robert Weiner

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Since 1855, the federal Courts of Claims have provided relief for citizens in cases against the United States. President Abraham Lincoln, in his first annual message in 1861, declared his support for such a process: “It is as much the duty of government to render prompt justice against itself, in favor of citizens, as it is to administer the same between private individuals” [Message of the President. (1862). Appendix to The Congressional Globe, 37th Congress, 2d session, 3 December 1861, p. 2]. Among the Courts’ cases, 240 of 375 recognized American Indian treaties have been cited 992 times in …

Federal Government Documents: Dead Or Alive, Charles D. Bernholz Jan 2008

Federal Government Documents: Dead Or Alive, Charles D. Bernholz

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Marcel Proust wrote “What we call our future is the shadow that our past projects in front of us.” For the federal documents universe, this is only partially correct. We should attend more to how it has felt to be documents librarians, instead of trying to reconcile the past with all those wishful digital delivery monologues. A lack of courage on our part now—or relying solely upon that handy silhouette—will jeopardize the prospect of tomorrow's federal documents and their use. That absence of daring, or the use of that crutch, will guarantee that whatever results we are handed in our …

Ebsco’S Communication & Mass Media Complete: An Appreciable Improvement Over Previous Communication Studies Indexing?, David C. Tyler, Signe Boudreau, Katharine C. Potter, Misty Redinbaugh

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

In a prior edition of this study, we examined whether the established online communication studies indexes—Communication Abstracts, ComIndex, and ComAbstracts—provided a good avenue of access to the journal literature that researchers in the field cite and whether, where the current journal literature was concerned, that avenue of access might be equal or superior to that provided by large, multisubject online indexes. In this iteration of the study, we similarly address EBSCO’s new product for communication studies, Communication & Mass Media Complete.

Library Personnel’S Role In The Creation Of Metadata: A Survey Of Academic Libraries, Adonna Fleming, Margaret Mering, Judith A. Wolfe Jan 2008

Library Personnel’S Role In The Creation Of Metadata: A Survey Of Academic Libraries, Adonna Fleming, Margaret Mering, Judith A. Wolfe

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The digital age has caused the paradigm to shift in academic libraries both in terms of their collections and the roles of their personnel. As academic libraries begin to digitize objects in their collections, how and who in the library creates access to these resources has become a hot issue. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries (UNL Libraries), taskforces were formed to study metadata schemes used at UNL Libraries. The taskforces identified the various metadata schemes in use and the role of various departments within UNL Libraries in the creation of metadata. They made recommendations about how to document decisions …
