Secondary Cities And The Global Economy, Xiangming Chen, Ahmed Kanna
Secondary Cities And The Global Economy, Xiangming Chen, Ahmed Kanna
Faculty Scholarship
Cities operate today in a more complex, indeed, global world. Cities help shape the global economy and culture, and are affected by it as they grow or decline. Cities change in varying ways in response to local and extra-local conditions. In this article, we address the understudied but distinctive conditions and roles of so-called secondary cities in the global economy. The critical importance of many secondary cities stems from and sustains their historical path of development and their shifting positions in national and global urban systems.
Ethnic Concerns And Latino Party Identification [Post-Print], Diana Evans, Ana Franco, James P. Wenzel, Robert D. Wrinkle
Ethnic Concerns And Latino Party Identification [Post-Print], Diana Evans, Ana Franco, James P. Wenzel, Robert D. Wrinkle
Faculty Scholarship
The accelerated growth of the Latino population in the United States has made Latinos a coveted addition to each major political party's base. In this paper we examine the influence of ethnic concerns on the party identification of Latinos in the U.S. In contrast to previous studies, we account for Latinos’ perceptions of the political parties’ concern for their ethnic interests, allowing such interests to be self-defined. In a multinomial logit analysis of pooled data from three surveys of Latinos taken in 1999, 2004, and 2006, we find such perceptions do affect Latino partisanship, along with variables such as nativity …
Occupy Wall Street: A Movement In The Making, Hannah G. Kaneck
Occupy Wall Street: A Movement In The Making, Hannah G. Kaneck
Senior Theses and Projects
It has changed the landscape of America in just the last eight months. Cries of “We are the 99%” fill the air. People are angry. Many will argue for years to come what the occupation has actually done for American society, politics and culture. It is clear though that things are changing. A precipice has been reached and it does not seem that those truly devoted to changing the system will back away quietly. Over the last 28 weeks I have read countless articles and interviews of occupiers from all over the world who have converged on Zuccotti Park in …

The Effect Of Debt Ceiling Announcements On The Banking Industry's Stock Returns: An Event Study Approach, Sean C. Mccarthy
The Effect Of Debt Ceiling Announcements On The Banking Industry's Stock Returns: An Event Study Approach, Sean C. Mccarthy
Senior Theses and Projects
In the wake of the debt ceiling crisis in the summer of 2011, the effect of the United States’ massive and growing national debt on asset markets has become a greater concern. With the banking and finance industry now taking up an increasing share of the United States economy, it is important to understand how ongoing increases in the national debt affect the value of firms in this industry. In particular, negative market reactions to increases in the allowable debt (the debt ceiling) may reduce investor wealth and perhaps also the willingness of banks to facilitate flows of capital and …
Look Who’S Talking: The Burqa Ban In France, Margaret Epstein
Look Who’S Talking: The Burqa Ban In France, Margaret Epstein
Senior Theses and Projects
This thesis is an effort to study a new area of what is known as the “headscarf affair” and the laws that have been written in response to it. Rather than simply state the facts over twenty years after the first “headscarf affair” “Look Who’s Talking: The Burqa Ban in France” investigates the way that France and the rest of the world create a discourse on the current matter at hand, supporting or opposing past, present and potentially future laws banning the headscarf. This is done in three parts, first through an analysis of other analytical essays, which discuss headscarf …
Foreigners From The Same Country, Adrian J. Lo
Foreigners From The Same Country, Adrian J. Lo
Senior Theses and Projects
My thesis aims to dissect the confounding factors that lead to the build up of social tension between the Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese population. The three main causes of this tension are the major increase in the wealthy population within China, Hong Kong’s “autonomous” political status, and Hong Kong’s resource constraints. My thesis also aims to provide suitable solutions to diminish or extinguish the tension and give a logical prediction of Hong Kong’s economic, political and social outlook in the upcoming years.
Career Academies And Conflicting Agendas: An Analysis Of Career And Technical Education In Hartford In The Context Of Broader School Policies, Mary K. Morr
Senior Theses and Projects
This thesis is an analysis of Career and Technical Education as a response to the low quality of public education in Hartford, Connecticut. Hartford Public Schools recently adopted the Career Academy model of CTE to restructure its failing high schools. This model is an improvement upon traditional forms of CTE, and graduation rates and test scores have increased since Hartford’s Academies opened in 2008. Still, whether Career Academies are an appropriate solution to the chronic underperformance of the city’s schools will depend upon their compatibility with the broader educational policies being implemented by the district and the State. The two …
A Complex Dynamic: The Relationship Between The United Nations And Regional Institutions In International Peacekeeping, Archana Vamathevan
A Complex Dynamic: The Relationship Between The United Nations And Regional Institutions In International Peacekeeping, Archana Vamathevan
Senior Theses and Projects
This paper looks at the relationship between the United Nations and regional organizations in international peacekeeping. Specifically, it analyzes what factors influence the deployment of an independent regional or UN peacekeeping mission or the creation of a hybrid UN-regional peacekeeping operation. This paper finds that a regional-level factor – the potential effectiveness of the regional organization in terms of available resources and perceived neutrality – and an international-level factor - the willingness of the Security Council - influence the establishment of a third-party peacekeeping mission in a civil conflict. Specifically, when an effective regional organization exists, it will intervene in …
Yield Rates And Enrollment Decisions At Trinity College In The 1990s And 2000s, Jennifer L. Waddington
Yield Rates And Enrollment Decisions At Trinity College In The 1990s And 2000s, Jennifer L. Waddington
Senior Theses and Projects
The yield rate of a college, which is the percentage of admitted students who enroll, is an important statistic because it ultimately impacts the selectivity of the college and the uncertainty in a school’s financial aid budget. This thesis uses admitted student surveys from 1993-2011 to investigate how Trinity’s yield is affected by a variety of different student factors and preference for the student body as a whole and for subgroups of the student population. The study uses regression analysis to examine how an admitted student’s decision to attend is affected by socioeconomic background, sex, race, the receipt of financial …
Mexico's Quest In The North American Markets, Antonio Diaz Gonzalez Salas
Mexico's Quest In The North American Markets, Antonio Diaz Gonzalez Salas
Senior Theses and Projects
Since the 1980s Mexico has implemented various economic policies that have improved its financial system at times. All the policies have ultimately failed. Since the 1990s both Mexico and China have made progress in foreign trade with their respective trade organizations. Mexico entered the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994 and China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001. In spite of being a part of two different trade organizations, both countries had a significant increase on their GDP and consequently a change of focus and direction towards their internal investments to enhance their production of exports. …
Computer Game Addiction And Emotional Dependence, Amy W. Poon
Computer Game Addiction And Emotional Dependence, Amy W. Poon
Senior Theses and Projects
As computer games grow in popularity, the negative effects of usage should be studied. Computer games (games played on a computer, tablet, or any web-enabled device) have salient qualities, especially MMORPGs, that cause addictive symptoms. I investigated computer game addiction and usage in Trinity College students. A sample of 114 students (M =20.4 years of age, 61% female) was divided into a non-addicted, social player, and computer-addicted group based on Young's Diagnostic Questionnaire. My results showed that there is no significant correlation between day quality and computer game usage, and no significant correlation between emotional dependence and group. Not enough …
What Factors Affect The Cost Of Credit Intermediation For Large And Small Firms?, Aalok R. Pandey
What Factors Affect The Cost Of Credit Intermediation For Large And Small Firms?, Aalok R. Pandey
Senior Theses and Projects
The financial crisis of the late 2000’s has had a devastating effect on the US economy. The economics that explains the amplification of such crises pertains to the financial accelerator model, which states that the supply of and demand for credit depends on interest rates or the credit rationing model, which suggests that credit is always rationed and interest rates have little or no effect on it. In this paper, we look at the factors that affect the cost of credit intermediation for large and small firms on a monthly and a quarterly basis. In addition, we also look at …
U.S. Consumption Function: An Empirical Test Of The Life-Cycle Hypothesis, Yuan Mei
U.S. Consumption Function: An Empirical Test Of The Life-Cycle Hypothesis, Yuan Mei
Senior Theses and Projects
Since the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008, high household consumption that was previously boosted by debt-financing has shrunk significantly. The validity of conventional models of consumption that are mainly based on the life-cycle hypothesis has thus been called into question. This thesis utilizes empirical analysis to test the explanatory power of a modified Keynesian consumption function that captures household balance sheet movements. In addition to a short run OLS model, a VEC model and a DOLS model are constructed to examine the long run cointegrating relationship between consumption and other macroeconomic variables. Neither the regression results of the …
The Standard Answer To American Business, Madison X. Helies
The Standard Answer To American Business, Madison X. Helies
Senior Theses and Projects
One hundred years after its dissolution, the Standard Oil Company retains its tarnished reputation for unscrupulous and anticompetitive behavior. Though this reputation has in many ways demonstrated what firms should not do, this paper examines the ways in which Standard Oil showed America how to successfully manage a rapidly growing business. The 19th Century saw a total upheaval of the American economy. With the Industrial Revolution and development of Big Business, American enterprise was forced to adapt and evolve. In the subsequent period of change in business organization, The Managerial Revolution, Standard Oil was among the most successful large firms, …

The Eroding Hukou System And The New Minimum Wage In China: The Impacts Of Economic Inequality, Labor Shortages And Social Unrest, Allison J. Selby
Senior Theses and Projects
The hukou system, also known as the Household Registration System, has had a significant impact on China’s social, political, and economic trajectory since the time of its implementation in 1958. Specifically, it has helped to create the societal-wide imbalance between the prosperous coastal cities along the eastern seaboard and the lagging rural countryside of China’s interior provinces, where a second class group of citizens has emerged. As a result, the central government has strategically begun to increase the minimum wage nation-wide, as evidenced by the 12th Five Year Plan. The repercussions of this are potentially enormous, not only for …

A Blessing In Disguise? Ghana's Potential To Overcome Nigeria's 'Oil Curse' And Develop A Successful Model For Oil Production Within A Human Rights Framework, Samantha N. Kerr
Senior Theses and Projects
Although Africa possesses rich natural resources, the Afro-pessimistic conception that African countries cannot manage their resources remains widespread. This research project provides a comparative analysis between the political and economic histories of Ghana and Nigeria following independence. In addition to focusing on these countries’ post-independent histories, this thesis examines the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) of the early 1990s in Nigeria as an effective civil society organization that vocalized the Nigerian government and Shell Petroleum Corporation’ corruption in the oil industry. Additionally, this research project explores Ghana’s potential to overcome Nigeria’s “negative” experience with oil due …

Do Gender And Relationship Composition Affect College Students’ Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Violence Severity?, Jasmine Owarish-Gross
Do Gender And Relationship Composition Affect College Students’ Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Violence Severity?, Jasmine Owarish-Gross
Senior Theses and Projects
Previous research has examined college students’ opinions about the severity of physical abuse in heterosexual, lesbian, and gay couples, but not their opinions regarding the severity of psychological and sexual abuse in the context of these relationships. The main aims of this study were to examine whether participant gender and relationship composition (i.e., heterosexual, lesbian, and gay couples) affected college students’ opinions about the severity of physical, psychological, and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV), if abuse in opposite-sex relationships was perceived as more severe than abuse in same-sex relationships, and if prior exposure to IPV was associated with lower IPV …
The Conflicts Of Euro-Islam: The Issues Of Immigration And Integration Of Muslims Into European Society, Shayla B. Campbell
The Conflicts Of Euro-Islam: The Issues Of Immigration And Integration Of Muslims Into European Society, Shayla B. Campbell
Senior Theses and Projects
Islamophobia is on the rise and is now a sentiment that has transcended almost every European country. In the aftermath of 9/11 and the subsequent bombings in Madrid and London, anxiety and fear of the “other” has been heightened. This fear has been harnessed by political parties in many European countries, most notably Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and France. These countries all have supported political parties that have formed an anti-Muslim platform. The main claim is that the “Islamic identity” is incompatible with the “European identity”. Despite these xenophobic attitudes, the immigration population still inhabits European countries and continues …

International Security & Failed States: Embracing Identity-Centric Strategies Of State-Building, Paul S. Holland
International Security & Failed States: Embracing Identity-Centric Strategies Of State-Building, Paul S. Holland
Senior Theses and Projects
In the twenty-first century, the balance of power between states is no longer the only source of global insecurity, but is joined by non-state threats that lurk behind a curtain of de jure sovereignty in failed states. Diseases, piracy, terrorists, criminal cartels, and rapacious corporations all take advantage of the poverty and lack of institutional capacity endemic to failed states. The resulting instability spreads across entire regions, affecting the global core and periphery states alike. It is therefore the security threat posed by failed states that necessitates state-building. This paper examines the evolution of state sovereignty and the role identity …
Resurrection Through Community: The Collapse And Rebirth Of Phoenixville, Pa, Julie Pesta
Resurrection Through Community: The Collapse And Rebirth Of Phoenixville, Pa, Julie Pesta
Senior Theses and Projects
Phoenixville, PA was a thriving industrial town located on the Schuylkill River, thirty miles outside of Philadelphia. After almost a century of success in the steel and iron markets, the factory and town suffered great hardship during the deindustrialization of the 1970s and 1980s. The community of Phoenixville had stayed strong throughout social and cultural shifts from the founding of the town, and they knew this era would be another struggle. In the late 1980s, the community and local government banded together and decided that Phoenixville needed a change in identity. No longer able to be an industrial center, Phoenixville …
Assumptions And "Facts" About College Self-Reported Sexual Behavior, Emily M. Pariseau
Assumptions And "Facts" About College Self-Reported Sexual Behavior, Emily M. Pariseau
Senior Theses and Projects
Many young people of today view sexual intercourse with a very casual attitude. The terms “hooking up” and “friends-with-benefits” have been introduced to our vocabularies. While young people are, on average, losing their virginity at the age of 17, they are holding off on marriage until their mid-to-late 20’s (Bogle, 2008; Bianchi & Casper, 2000), and that combination leaves many years for sexual experimentation. The present study was conducted to investigate some of the factors that may influence the decisions that young people are making when it comes to their sexual lives. An online survey developed for this study was …

The Roc And The Hard Place: The Empirical Effects Of Economic Development Projects On Property Value, And The Reurbanization Of Rochester, Ny, Henry R. Fitts
Senior Theses and Projects
Using quantitative analysis techniques in GIS and SPSS this piece analyzes property assessment data from Rochester, NY dating back to 1990. These values are compared to the City's economic development project sites, and cluster and regression analyses were conducted to measure the effect of proximity. The evaluations held mixed results, and further study is required to prove that proximity to a project site has a positive influence on property values. Nonetheless, the study shows some evidence to support this hypothesis and notes important geographical phenomena.

Contra Viento Y Marea (Against Wind And Tide): Building Civic Identity Among Children Of Emigration In El Salvador, Andrea E. Dyrness
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines contrasting approaches to citizenship education in two schools in San Salvador, El Salvador, in the face of highly visible transnational migration. I argue that while transnational realities challenge education for democratic citizenship, educational processes that enable students to interrogate their own transnational realities—in particular, their relationship to macrostructural relations of inequality—facilitate the development of critical, action-oriented civic identities.

Shoestring Democracy: Gated Condominiums And Market Rate Co-Operatives In New York [Pre-Print], Setha Low, Gregory T. Donovan, Jen Jack Gieseking
Faculty Scholarship
This article develops the concept of shoestring democracy as a way to characterize the resulting social relations of private governance structures embedded in two types of collective housing schemes found in New York City and the adjoining suburbs: gated condominium communities (gated condominiums) and market-rate cooperative apartment complexes (co-ops). Drawing from ethnographies of gated condominiums and co-ops in New York City and neighboring Nassau County, New York, we compare these two forms of collective home ownership regarding the impact of private governance structures on residents and their sense of representation and participation in ongoing community life. “Shoestring democracy” encompasses a …
