Physician Shortage Or Allocation Problem? A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Primary Care Physician Shortage Rurally In The United States, Mazin E. Khalil
Physician Shortage Or Allocation Problem? A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Primary Care Physician Shortage Rurally In The United States, Mazin E. Khalil
Masters Theses
This paper seeks to address the meaning of supply and demand as it relates to physician shortages, the claim that there is an actual shortage problem and the theory that the issue is not one of a shortage but simply a misallocation of physicians, and explores some potential solutions to the issue with case studies highlighting China, and Australia, which have faced similar issues and have utilized innovative approaches to dealing with their problems.

Urban Development In Hartford: Neoliberalism, Inequality, And Trinity College As An Anchor Institution, Eavan Flanagan
Urban Development In Hartford: Neoliberalism, Inequality, And Trinity College As An Anchor Institution, Eavan Flanagan
Senior Theses and Projects
This thesis explores the ways in which neoliberal governance takes place in Hartford, CT, particularly as the city struggles to make ends meet. It looks at the Hartford's dependence on corporations, and its growing political and economic alignment with universities. This research examines the effects of urban renewal on the city, and how post-war policies and development shape the inequalities that exist in Hartford today. Lastly, this thesis examines the inequalities and spatial dynamics in Hartford's Southside neighborhood, Frog Hollow, and between Trinity College and Frog Hollow in particular.
The Things We Carry: Pilgrim Identity And Material Culture Along Spain’S Camino De Santiago, Isabelle Moore
The Things We Carry: Pilgrim Identity And Material Culture Along Spain’S Camino De Santiago, Isabelle Moore
Senior Theses and Projects
In recent decades, the mediaeval Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route has enjoyed a significant resurgence in popularity. Despite the route’s Christian heritage as “the way of St. James,” todays Camino-walkers present an impressive range of spiritual, physical, and personal motivations for undergoing the route. This modern twist on an ancient tradition has sparked an academic discussion surrounding what constitutes a “pilgrim” versus a “tourist,” including the ways in which people of different motivating identities experience heritage. I investigated this dichotomy by walking the Camino Frances and conducting ethnographic fieldwork from St. Jean Pied de Port, France to Santiago, Spain. In …
Using Institutional Characteristics To Estimate Return On College Education, Nate Choukas
Using Institutional Characteristics To Estimate Return On College Education, Nate Choukas
Senior Theses and Projects
Since the 1980s, the college wage-premium in the United States has reached all time highs. As a result, college education is a critical benchmark in securing high paying jobs. While the bachelor’s degree serves as a gateway into more lucrative careers, postsecondary education can be very costly, with some taking on substantial amounts of debt to finance their schooling. Despite the increasing wage-premium, there is an even wider earnings disparity amongst college graduates than between graduates and non-graduates. Research on higher education returns suggests that most individuals – even those ranked as having low ability – benefit financially from their …
Immigration Enforcement In The Age Of Trump: Local Government Responses To Federal Immigration Rhetoric And Policy Change, Abigail Painchaud
Immigration Enforcement In The Age Of Trump: Local Government Responses To Federal Immigration Rhetoric And Policy Change, Abigail Painchaud
Senior Theses and Projects
This thesis explores how local governments, and specifically police departments are responding to the federal immigration rhetoric and policy changes. Previous literature argues that the national government’s role in immigration will strongly shape how local governments respond and how they will change their policies. In the first section, this thesis examines sanctuary cities across the United States and uses a specific data set of sanctuary cities to determine their status and their changes under the new administration. I find that despite the constant change on the national level and the anti-immigrant rhetoric, localities around the United States are pursuing accommodating …
Leave-Taking’S Prevailing Effect On Real Wage Growth: Paid Vs. Unpaid Maternity Leave, Soe Han Tha
Leave-Taking’S Prevailing Effect On Real Wage Growth: Paid Vs. Unpaid Maternity Leave, Soe Han Tha
Senior Theses and Projects
Paid maternity leave’s effect on women’s real wage growth is indeterminate in theory. Paid maternity leave could help a woman return to the same job postpartum, reducing the unemployment in between jobs (which we see as external leaves). Simultaneously, paid maternity leave could incentivize women to take more leave within a job (which we see as internal leaves). According to the human capital theory, if more women increase leave-taking due to the subsidy on leave and the cheaper opportunity cost of pregnancy, women’s overall productivity will decline and their wage growth will slow down. This analysis uses the National Longitudinal …
Monetary Policy At The Zero Lower Bound: Implications Of High Costs Of Credit During A Recession, Louisa Kammerer
Monetary Policy At The Zero Lower Bound: Implications Of High Costs Of Credit During A Recession, Louisa Kammerer
Senior Theses and Projects
This paper examines the challenges policymaker (and firms) encounter when confronted by a recession at the zero lower bound, when traditional monetary policy is ineffective in the face of deteriorated balance sheets and high costs of credit. Within the larger body of literature, this paper focuses on the cost of credit during a recession, which constrains smaller firms from borrowing and investing, thus magnifying the contraction. Extending and revising a model originally developed by Walker (2010) and estimated by Pandey and Ramirez (2012), this study uses a Vector Error Correction Model to analyze the effects of relevant economic and financial …
Exploring The Intentionally Diverse Charter Model: A Potential For Progress In Meaningful School Integration, Jennifer Martin
Exploring The Intentionally Diverse Charter Model: A Potential For Progress In Meaningful School Integration, Jennifer Martin
Senior Theses and Projects
This thesis explores the potential of the intentionally diverse charter model. By first analyzing the presence of charter schools in our educational system and then exploring past and contemporary segregation in the United States, this thesis highlights the need for educational policy that addresses bringing meaningful diversity into schools. This thesis makes an argument for the merits of intentionally diverse charter schools as a way to innovate best practices for the charter school sector as well as the potential for these innovations to be adopted by traditional public schools. This work builds upon existing scholarship to highlight the potential in …

Beyond The Binary: How Discourses Affect Non-Binary People's Access To Gender-Affirming Healthcare, Lori Puopolo
Beyond The Binary: How Discourses Affect Non-Binary People's Access To Gender-Affirming Healthcare, Lori Puopolo
Senior Theses and Projects
Sociological literature on the medicalization of trans people has looked at how medical providers use a medical model of trans identity to determine which trans people may have access to gender-affirming healthcare. This study adds to the conversation by looking at how discourses affect non-binary people’s access to gender-affirming healthcare. While medical providers use a dominant discourse on trans people to regulate non-binary people’s bodies, non-binary people internalize these same discourses to either delay their own care. Online, non-binary people discuss among one another to inform themselves of their options. As they gather more information, they become more willing to …
What Do You Mean I Got A D+? Effects Of Feedback Type And Quality On Academic Performance, Metacognition, And Motivation In High School Students, Daisuke Katsumata
What Do You Mean I Got A D+? Effects Of Feedback Type And Quality On Academic Performance, Metacognition, And Motivation In High School Students, Daisuke Katsumata
Senior Theses and Projects
Numerous studies have established that feedback is among the most effective ways to improve student achievement. However, not all studies have defined feedback in the same way, so the effectiveness of feedback has depended on how it has been defined and the context in which it was provided (Hattie & Timperely, 2007). This study investigated the effects of a feedback intervention on student academic performance, metacognition, and motivation. The students in the study came from two sections of a high school world history class at an inter-district magnet school in Hartford, Connecticut. All feedback was provided by the same teacher …

College Women's Interest In An Over-The-Counter Oral Contraceptive, Haley Dougherty
College Women's Interest In An Over-The-Counter Oral Contraceptive, Haley Dougherty
Senior Theses and Projects
The purpose of this thesis was to learn whether an over-the-counter (OTC) oral contraceptive pill would benefit college students. To find out, I conducted sixteen semi-structured interviews with college students from Trinity College and Capital Community College, both located in Hartford, Connecticut. All participants either currently took oral contraceptives or had taken them in the past. This thesis accepts as its premise that oral contraceptives should be available OTC, but as a policy solution to increase access, I found that an OTC pill would have a limited effect.

Development In Tanzania: From Foreign Aid Dependency To Impact Investment, Katherine Kelter
Development In Tanzania: From Foreign Aid Dependency To Impact Investment, Katherine Kelter
Senior Theses and Projects
The foreign aid system today is broken. Developing countries should seek to experiment with new strategies to alleviate poverty. This thesis focuses specifically on the development of Tanzania as an example for East Africa. The population in East Africa is growing at an alarming rate, yet most live on less than $1.10 a day. How can African countries prepare for such a rapid increase in population growth? How can a country with such high poverty levels take on such high growth and spread its benefits across the entire population? Traditional aid systems with a top-down approach will not solve the …
Alcohol Use In Student Athletes: The Influence Of Injunctive Norms, Trait Urgency And Competitiveness, Annabel Stanley
Alcohol Use In Student Athletes: The Influence Of Injunctive Norms, Trait Urgency And Competitiveness, Annabel Stanley
Senior Theses and Projects
Previous research has shown student-athletes are at greater risk for heavy alcohol use and that trait urgency (i.e., acting impulsively in response to negative or positive affect), injunctive norms (i.e., perceived approval from teammates and coaches about alcohol consumption), and drinking motives are associated with substance use. In my study, I aimed to not only replicate these associations with athletes from a small, private Division III institution, but also examined several new questions, including whether captains’ approval of drinking predicted athlete drinking and whether the association between drinking motives and actual drinking (and drinking-related problems) depended on a team’s level …
America's War On Drugs: Applying A Supply And Demand Framework For The Opioid Epidemic Through The Lens Of Federalism, Cari Librett
America's War On Drugs: Applying A Supply And Demand Framework For The Opioid Epidemic Through The Lens Of Federalism, Cari Librett
Senior Theses and Projects
For the past fifty years, American drug policy has been manipulated and enforced in a way that made it possible for drug epidemics to occur and has exaggerated their negative consequences on society. The War on Drugs policy initiatives first implemented in the 1970s created a drug law enforcement structure that has criminalized addiction and made it difficult for addicts to receive treatment. The United States is currently facing it's worst drug epidemic in history due to these policies. However, unlike previous epidemics, the opioid crisis is particularly unique not only because of the unparalleled nature of the issue, but …

Gender And Subject Area Differences In Academic Metacognition And Motivation, Adelaide Jenkins
Gender And Subject Area Differences In Academic Metacognition And Motivation, Adelaide Jenkins
Senior Theses and Projects
This study was a continuation of the ongoing Trinity metacognition project investigating the metacognitive awareness and skills of middle school students. The present study examined whether there were gender differences in the ways metacognition is used in two different subject areas: social studies and math. It also investigated whether gender has an effect on how students use metacognition in these two school subjects. Students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade were surveyed about their metacognitive and motivational awareness in math and social studies. Results showed that female students used metacognition more than male students in both math and social …
Infant Mortality And Maternal Health In Hartford, Ct, Chelsea Armistead
Infant Mortality And Maternal Health In Hartford, Ct, Chelsea Armistead
Senior Theses and Projects
Infant mortality is the death of an infant within the first year of life. These deaths are measured annually as a rate per every 1,000 live births and is a key indicator about maternal and infant health in a society (CDC, 2018). The United States infant mortality rate is very high when compared to other equally wealthy nations. Black infants die at a much higher rate than other racial groups, including in Connecticut. The city of Hartford's Department of Health and Human Services has plans to reduce infant mortality by providing quality prenatal and postpartum care programs and services. In …
