Examining The Cdcynergy Event Assessment Tool: An Investigation Of The Anthrax Crisis In Boca Raton, Florida, J. J. Mcintyre, Steven J. Venette

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the dependability of the Event Assessment Tool over time. The latter is part of a CD-ROM-Emergency Risk Communication CDCynergy-distributed primarily to public information officers in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Event Assessment Tool is designed to aid emergency professionals in identifying the magnitude of a crisis event and to suggest appropriate actions to confront such a situation. Applied twice during the 2001 anthrax bioterrorism crisis in Boca Raton, Florida, the tool functioned in a binary manner by first indicating a moderate crisis level (on 4 October) and then four days …

Gender Differences In The Relative Age Effect Among Us Olympic Development Program Youth Soccer Players, John Vincent, Francis D. Glamser Apr 2006

Gender Differences In The Relative Age Effect Among Us Olympic Development Program Youth Soccer Players, John Vincent, Francis D. Glamser

Faculty Publications

A large body of research has shown that a disproportionate number of elite youth male soccer players competing in age-segmented competition are born early in the selection year. The advantage of being born early in a cohort has been termed the "relative age effect''. Although there has been an exponential growth in women's soccer, few studies have examined the relative age effect in female youth soccer. This study compared the relative age effect of 1344 female and male youth soccer players considered by the US Olympic Development Program (ODP), in 2001, to be the most talented soccer players born in …

Satellite Ocean Color Assessment Of Air-Sea Fluxes Of Co2 In A River-Dominated Coastal Margin, Steven E. Lohrenz, Wei-Jun Cai Jan 2006

Satellite Ocean Color Assessment Of Air-Sea Fluxes Of Co2 In A River-Dominated Coastal Margin, Steven E. Lohrenz, Wei-Jun Cai

Quantification of the contributions of river-influenced margins to regional CO2 fluxes is difficult due to the high degree of spatial and temporal variability in these regions. We describe an algorithm for assessment of surface water partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)) from MODIS imagery in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Principal component analysis and multiple regression were used to relate surface pCO(2) to environmental variables (T, S, chlorophyll). Subsequent retrieval of corresponding products from MODIS-Aqua L1B data permitted the assessment of regional distributions of pCO(2). An area of low pCO(2) was evident in the vicinity of the Mississippi River delta, consistent …

Current psychiatric nosology depicts posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a discrete diagnostic category. However, only one study has examined the latent structure of PTSD, and this study suggested that PTSD may be more accurately conceptualized as an extreme reaction to traumatic life events rather than a discrete clinical syndrome. To build on the existing literature base, the present research examined the latent structure of posttraumatic stress reactions by applying three taxometric procedures (MAXEIG, MAMBAC, and L-Mode) to data collected from large nationally representative samples of women (ns = 2684 and 3033) and adolescents (n = 3775). Results …
