Sexual Values Among Latino Youth: Measurement Development Using A Culturally Based Approach, Julianna Deardorff, Jeanne M. Tschann, Elena Flores

School of Education Faculty Research

Latino youth in the United States are at higher risk for negative sexual outcomes compared to their European American counterparts. Adherence to traditional sexual values may protect against or increase their risk. Past studies have generally utilized proxy measures, such as acculturation, to assess sexual values. The objective of the current study was to develop and test culturally based sexual values measures among Latino youth. Focus groups and qualitative interviews were conducted to generate themes related to sexual values. Six measures were developed: three related to gender role norms (Sexual Talk as Disrespectful, Satisfaction of Sexual Needs as Important, Female …

Lower Limb Coordination And Stiffness During Landing From Volleyball Block Jumps, Gerwyn Hughes, James Watkins Jan 2008

Lower Limb Coordination And Stiffness During Landing From Volleyball Block Jumps, Gerwyn Hughes, James Watkins

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

The aim of the study was to investigate lower limb coordination and stiffness in five male and five female university volleyball players performing block jump landings. Coordination was assessed using angle – angle plots of the hip – knee, knee – ankle and hip – ankle joint couplings and discrete relative phase (DRP) of right – left joint couplings (i.e. left knee coupled with right knee). Leg stiffness was calculated as the ratio of the change in vertical ground reaction force (GRF) to the change in vertical displacement of the centre of gravity between ground contact and maximum vertical GRF. …

Gender Differences In Lower Limb Frontal Plane Kinematics During Landing, Gerwyn Hughes, James Watkins, Nick Owen Jan 2008

Gender Differences In Lower Limb Frontal Plane Kinematics During Landing, Gerwyn Hughes, James Watkins, Nick Owen

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

The study aimed to investigate gender differences in knee valgus angle and interknee and inter-ankle distances in university volleyball players when performing opposed block jump landings. Six female and six male university volleyball players performed three dynamic trials each where subjects were instructed to jump up and block a volleyball suspended above a net set at the height of a standard volleyball net as it was spiked against them by an opposing player. Knee valgus/varus, interknee distance and inter-ankle distance (absolute and relative to height) were determined during landing using 3D motion analysis. Females displayed significantly greater maximum valgus angle …

Ranking Economics Journals, Economics Departments, And Economists Using Teaching-Focused Research Productivity, Melody Lo, M.C. Sunny Wong, Franklin G. Mixon Jr. Jan 2008

Ranking Economics Journals, Economics Departments, And Economists Using Teaching-Focused Research Productivity, Melody Lo, M.C. Sunny Wong, Franklin G. Mixon Jr.

Economics

This paper constructs new rankings of economics journals, economics departments, and economists that employ a measure of teaching-focused research productivity, an area of growing importance in recent years. The ranking methodologies presented here use information from articles that were published from 1991 through the early part of 2005 within the "Journal of Economic Literature'"s "economic education" classifications (A200-A290). The "Journal of Economic Literature" tops the list of journals, followed by the "Review of Economics and Statistics and the American Economic Review". Among the top institutions are Vanderbilt University, Indiana University, and the University of Wisconsin. Others that rank high here, …

Global Norms, Local Activism, And Social Movement Outcomes: Global Human Rights And Resident Koreans In Japan, Kiyoteru Tsutsui, Hwaji Shin Jan 2008

Global Norms, Local Activism, And Social Movement Outcomes: Global Human Rights And Resident Koreans In Japan, Kiyoteru Tsutsui, Hwaji Shin

Sociology

The authors integrate social movement outcomes research and the world society approach to build a theoretical model to examine the impact of global and local factors on movement outcomes. Challenging the current research on policy change, which rarely examines the effects of global norms and local activism in one analysis, they argue (1) that global regimes empower and embolden local social movements and increase pressure on target governments from below, and (2) that local activists appeal to international forums with help from international activists to pressure the governments from above. When the pressures from the top and the bottom converge, …

The Emotional Harbinger Effect: Poor Context Memory For Cues That Previously Predicted Something Arousing, M Mather, Marisa Knight Jan 2008

The Emotional Harbinger Effect: Poor Context Memory For Cues That Previously Predicted Something Arousing, M Mather, Marisa Knight

Psychology

A key function of memory is to use past experience to predict when something important might happen next. Indeed, cues that previously predicted arousing events (emotional harbingers) garner more attention than other cues. However, the current series of five experiments demonstrates that people have poorer memory for the context of emotional harbinger cues than of neutral harbinger cues. Participants first learned that some harbinger cues (neutral tones or faces) predicted emotionally arousing pictures and others predicted neutral pictures. Then they studied associations between the harbinger cues and new contextual details. They were worse at remembering associations with emotional harbingers than …
