The Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History is pleased to announce two new additions to its staff: Teresa L. Hollingsworth of Berea, Kentucky, who is filling the newly created position of Folklife Coordinator, and Mary E. O'Meara of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., who will replace Alicia Rouverol as the Archives' Associate Director. Ms. Hollingsworth, a graduate of the Folk Studies Program at Western Kentucky University, was the staff folklorist at the Kentucky Folklife Program at Berea College, and conducted extensive folklife surveys along the Ohio and Kentucky River Valleys.

In 1947, at the request of the Maine Agricultural Extension Service, personnel of the USDA and Extension Service studied three Maine towns: Addison, in Washington County; Easton, in Aroostook County; and Turner, in Androscoggin County. The purpose of the studies was to determine the factors related to participation in Extension and other community-based activities; results of the research were summarized in Hay et al. (1949). The 1986-89 study of Addison analyzed in this publication is a component of a research project that focuses also on Easton and Turner and Landaff, New Hampshire. Given the continuing potential loss from soil erosion and the significant effort put forth recently to alleviate the problem in Aroostook County, it is important to study ways to improve the success rate of that effort. One way to improve the soil loss problem is for farmers to adopt conservation tillage practices for those areas where there are significant benefits from doing so. The objective of this study is to identify the characteristics important in the adoption decisions of Aroostook County farmers. "Privatization" is being promoted in this decade as the ultimate economic panacea. The latest "privatization craze" began in 1980 in Britain under Margaret Thatcher and has since spread throughout the industrialized nations of the world, such as France, Japan, the United States. More recently, the policy of privatization has been introduced in Mexico, Brazil, and other Third World countries. Billions of dollars of public assets have already been sold on the market to private investors and billions more of government tax revenues have been contracted out to private firms during this decade.

Sherburne, who has worked in Tanzania for several years, was there most recently in 1988 and 1989 working on the parks project. Emotional Processing In The Treatment Of Simple Phobia: A Comparison Of Imaginal And In Vivo Exposure, Jeffrey E. Hecker

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Two groups of moderately snake phobic college students were given either imaginal or in vivo exposure treatment. The groups were compared on self-report and physiological measures of fear activation during exposure trials, as well as on within- and across-session habituation of fear responses. On these measures, as well as on treatment outcome, the two groups were found to be very similar. The results lend further support to the importance of the concept of emotional processing in understanding fear reduction processes. Differences in treatment procedure may be important only when one procedure facilitates emotional processing more than another.
