Prosociality: Promoting Helpful Behaviors Not Just Helpful Intentions, Katherine E. Lees

When social institutions (e.g. Religion and the State) give reminders to help others, it can promote prosociality. Shariff’s (2016) meta-analysis of prosociality indicates that religiosity promotes self-reported helping, but finds no consistent effect in lab-based behavioral measures of prosociality. Furthermore, existing behavioral measures are often not ecologically-valid representations of prosociality, leaving the unique effect of religion on helping unclear. This study explores the role of religion on helping, which is known to promote helping between group members, and the state, which promotes helping across groups, in a relatively valid behavioral helping scenario. Climate change is affecting many industries in Maine and all over the world, but this research aims to highlight the effects of climate change on Maine’s lobster industry. Data from the Maine Department of Marine Resources allow for analysis of landings, price per pound, and real value between 2004 and 2015. The ideal model would include proxies for fishing effort, natural cycles of species, commercial fishing laws, management changes, temperature, weather severity, salinity changes, social hierarchy changes etc. Due to data limitations, the quantitative research question is: do increasing water temperatures have a negative effect on the lobster industry? Analyzing Government-Resident Communication Methods In The City Of Bangor, Jaymi Thibault

The objective of this study is to analyze the communication preferences of Bangor residents, with a particular focus on two of Bangor’s largest demographics, renters and residents aged 60 or older. Based on results from existing literature, it was hypothesized that both renters and elderly residents of Bangor would be less satisfied with the city’s communication efforts than the general population, due to less knowledgeability of municipal information and limited internet access, respectively. 510 residents participated in an online survey that asked residents to describe their preferences regarding city communication methods. Watching a movie in the 1950s is still somehow reminiscent of today. We have put an end to blackface, the practice of coloring a white person’s face with paint to fill the role of a historically non-white character without hiring an accurate representative. Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Papers

Several investigators have observed lowered risk of depression among obese older adults, coining the “jolly fat” hypothesis. We examined this hypothesis using baseline and a 5-year follow-up body mass index, depressive symptoms, and covariates from 638 community-based older adults. High objectively measured body mass index and functional limitations predicted increased future depressive symptoms. However, symptoms did not predict future body mass index. Self-reported body mass index showed similar associations despite underestimating obesity prevalence. Results did not differ on the basis of gender. Results for this study, the first longitudinal reciprocal risk analysis between objectively measured body mass index and depressive …

BETWEEN THE HEAD of tide above Bangor to where it widens into the bay at Searsport, the Penobscot River shifts from a flowing freshwater waterway banked by cedar and pine to a brackish, wave-lapped marsh with a rocky shoreline. In this estuary, salt concentrations fluctuate as the winds and tides push sea water and sediments back and forth. The estuary and the river that feeds it have taken on a new character recently, and have become an international example of watershed restoration. In the Arthur St. John Hill Auditorium in Barrows Hall on Oct. 6, 2016, a group of Hispanic employees working for the Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) discussed their work throughout the state of Maine. This presentation, titled “Hispanics Helping People Help the Land Throughout Maine” was a part of the Hispanic Heritage Lecture Series for 2016. This was the last event in the series, but was very different than its predecessors, talking less of diversity and more about the work the group did.

Compounds in cocoa and chocolate have established cardiovascular benefits, including beneficial effects on insulin resistance, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aims of this study was to investigate relations between habitual chocolate intakes and diabetes mellitus. Cross-sectional and prospective analyses were undertaken on 953 community-dwelling participants (mean age 62 years, 59% women) from the Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Study (MSLS). Habitual chocolate intakes, measured using a food frequency questionnaire, were related to prevalence of diabetes mellitus (cross-sectionally) and with risk of diabetes measured approximately five years later (prospectively). The Sept. 6. 2016, edition of The Maine Campus included a degrading opinion piece rife with the perpetuation of crippling stereotypes that have had an enormous effect on the African-American community. Editor Jacob Posik’s piece “Kaepernick saga telling of America’s racial divides” not only included gross generalizations of the African-American community but also displayed an alarming apathy towards police brutality and the lives and valid concerns of his fellow Americans. This piece dangerously spews racial rhetoric that is offensive and has no place for a liberal school campus.
