In 1987 Ernie Freeberg and Jeff (Smoky) McKeen produced two radio programs, "Music of the St. John Valley" and "Maine's Finnish Communities." The programs consisted of a series of interviews interspersed with samples of music. The goals of the project were twofold: to document Maine's rich musical traditions and to bring to the forefront the history and traditions of Maine's varied heritage. Eight programs were completed, supported by the Maine Folklife Center with funds from the Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Community Foundation. The radio series was broadcast for the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The Maine Folklife Center offers …

NAFTA did not begin on January 1, 1994, but rather, many years earlier in 1988 with the Canadian/USA Free Trade Agreement and with President Carlos Salinas de Gortari's economic reforms. The latest Mexican crisis is but the historic continuation of its 1982 debt crisis. Both are part of the larger global stagnation crisis which began in the 1970s and continues today. NAFTA is not a free trade agreement, but rather the creation of a North American trade block, designed and implemented by American multinational corporations to obtain a greater share of a stagnant global output. It is not a "win, …

Solid Waste Management (Swm) Options: The Economics Of Variable Cost And Conventional Pricing Systems In Maine, Stephanie Seguino, Margarita Suarez, Jeff Young, Robert Mckay, Christopher Spruce, George Criner
Government & Civic Life
Solid waste management has been influenced by the growing trend to apply market-based incentives to environmental problems. The impetus to reform solid waste management procedures in part stems from the increasing costs associated with solid waste disposal, thus encouraging municipalities to seek innovative ways to reduce solid waste generation. One method adopted by numerous municipalities in Maine is known as variable cost pricing. Alternatively, this system is referred to as unit pricing, volume-based fees, and pay-by-the-bag (PB). Under this system, waste collection fees are based on the volume of solid waste disposal. A household's solid waste disposal costs change with …

Greenland, far north land of the Atlantic, has often been beyond the limit of European farming settlement. One of its Norse settlements, colonized just before AD 1000, is — astonishingly — not even at the southern tip, but a way up the west coast, the 'Western Settlement'. Environmental studies show why its occupation came to an end within five centuries, leaving Greenland once more a place of Arctic-adapted hunters.

Maine Folklife Center Newsletter
So much has happened since the last Newsletter appeared that it will be impossible to cover it all, but perhaps a little history would help. Back in 1983 when I became Chair of Anthropology, Rita Breton came on line as Archives Manager...
At about this time we decided to change our name to the Maine Folklife Center, in de facto recognition both that archival work was only a part of what we were doing and that we were getting more and more into public programming. A further part of our plan was to absorb Northeast Folklore and the Northeast Folklore …

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Scanned items from Ada Viola Smith (Peters) alumni file. Smith earned a BA in French from the University and was a member of the Class of 1927.
Smith has frequently been referred to as the first African American graduate of the University of Maine. However, while she may have been one of the earliest Black graduate (and even the earliest female Black graduate) there is evidence of earlier Black graduates (see Frederico Matheas item in this collection).
The items include a note regarding Smith's death (1995), correspondence regarding Smith's donation to the University of Maine (1978), inauguration of Harry Philpott …
