The Cultural Construction Of The Maine Sporting Camps, March O. Mccubrey

Maine History

Maine’s lakes and forests attracted a growing number of urban hunters and anglers after 1880. Attracted in part by the informality and remoteness of the Maine woods, these urban recreationists nevertheless imposed their own sense of order and propriety upon the culture of the sporting camp. Urban “sports “ went “back to nature, ” yet maintained their status - and their social distance - as ladies and gentlemen. ”

Each year from 1790 to the end of the Civil War the town’s people of Otisfield wrestled with the dilemma of town relief. Examining this issue from two perspectives - the town taxpayers and the town poor - Jean Hankins sheds light on the politics, the finances, the hardships, the family life, and the burdens of responsibility in Maine's nineteenth-century small towns.

Beaver, Blankets, Liquor, And Politics Pemaquid’S Fur Trade, 1614-1760, Neill Depaoli

Maine History

The trading posts at Pemaquid typified the transactions, administrative phases, and cross-cultural contacts that made up the New England fur trade in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Using archaeological and documentary evidence, Neill DePaoli explores this important yet volatile industry through several stages, including early informal transactions, a merchant entrepreneurial phase, provincial supervision, and illegal exchanges during the closing years of the fort's significance.

Rising electricity costs over the past several years have set off alarm bells about the possible effects on economic growth in Maine. Efforts to at least reduce the rate of growth of electricity prices have led to charges and countercharges between the state's largest utility and many of the non-utility generators (NUG's), and resulted in major battles in the recent session of the Maine Legislature. The pricing of electric power is not only an issue at the state level, it also gathers the attention of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. A major pricing issue now facing FERC involves electric transmission. This reflects increased competition in the electric generation business and is of particular concern in the wholesale electricity market, which is regulated by FERC. As FERC Commissioner Donald F. Fusing Educational Reform Policy And Action: Assuring The Development Of Local Leaders, George F. Marnik, Gordon A. Donaldson Jr.

School change does not happen in a vacuum. It requires initiative and leadership. Because Maine's educational system features a strong local control component, successful educational change requires development of local leadership. George Marnik and Gordon Donaldson report on the Maine Academyfor School Leaders, an educational leadership development project in which they were involved. Among other things, the researchers learned that successful educational change is not likely to result from a one-size-fits-all state policy. Rather, successful reform occurs "one individual at a time, one school at a time."

Will universal health insurance ever become a reality? In this, based on his address in October as the 1994 Margaret Chase Smith Lecturer, former Massachusetts Governor Michael S. Dukakis suggests that efforts to establish universal coverage will continue. He argues, however, that the success of these efforts depends on the public adhering to the principle that all citizens will contribute to a system of universal coverage.
