Cue Reactivity To Images Of Alcohol: Creation Of A Standardized Picture Set, Kelsey M. Krueger May 2015

Cue Reactivity To Images Of Alcohol: Creation Of A Standardized Picture Set, Kelsey M. Krueger

Theses - ALL

To study alcohol approach inclinations in a laboratory setting, researchers commonly use cue reactivity paradigms involving presentation of alcohol cues and measurement of responses. However, available picture sets present potential limitations due to their multidimensional nature. A critical task was to develop a set of standardized images without brand labels, actors, or settings, in order to gain a clearer assessment of college students’ reactions to alcohol, and alcohol alone, while minimizing contextual influences. In Study 1, a set of images with satisfactory reliability was created. To replicate and expand upon these findings, Study 2 included a sample of 163 participants …

Embedding Nationalism: Construction & Effects Of National Narratives In The Xxvii Olympic Games' Opening Ceremony, Rachel Elizabeth Presley May 2015

Embedding Nationalism: Construction & Effects Of National Narratives In The Xxvii Olympic Games' Opening Ceremony, Rachel Elizabeth Presley

Theses - ALL

This thesis examines the construction and effects of the XXVII Olympic Games’ opening ceremony as a national narrative, scripted by and for the state. The performance’s chronological structure and staging of its characters have profound effects on how Australian bodies are read and remembered as citizens. The ceremony’s narrative features a distorted retelling of colonial history that produces enormous consequences in how Indigenous and non-Indigenous, male and female actors are presented. An analysis of these characters reveals how the national narrative comes to function as a piece of political propaganda that perpetuates idealized forms of citizenship within a hegemonic patriarchal …

The Effects Of Relationship Satisfaction With Primary Caregivers On Adult Relationship Conflict In Survivors Of Childhood Abuse, Tess Stoops May 2015

The Effects Of Relationship Satisfaction With Primary Caregivers On Adult Relationship Conflict In Survivors Of Childhood Abuse, Tess Stoops

Theses - ALL

It has been shown in research that childhood abuse can be detrimental to children and their abilities to cope, function at school, understand social situations, and even to communicate in their adult romantic relationships (Coleman & Widom, 2004; Haskett & Kistner, 1991; Perry, 2009). As a child that has been abused grows and forms relationships as an adult, the abuse can affect these relationships in negative ways (Unger & Luca, 2014; Coleman & Widom, 2004). However, close relationships that provide safety and attunement can help create healthy attachments that foster coping skills to counteract the effects of the abuse (Siegal, …

Redesigning The Use Of Electronic Health Records In The Exam Room: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Quinton Dean Fletchall May 2015

Redesigning The Use Of Electronic Health Records In The Exam Room: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Quinton Dean Fletchall

Theses - ALL

Utilizing video-recordings and transcriptions of actual clinical interactions, as well as interviews with patients and physicians, this thesis analyzes how the use of electronic health records, and the information found within them, impact doctor-patient interaction and, in effect, notions of patient-centered care. ‘Patient centered care,’ a major area of focus in doctor-patient communication literature, is a style of interaction where the patient is put first and their concerns and feelings are given priority over the ‘biomedical agenda’ by the doctor. Using a multidisciplinary approach between language and social interaction and industrial and interaction design, this thesis proposes possible changes to …

Michael Manley’S Nationalism In The 1970s: An Analysis Of The Speeches As Prime Minister Of Jamaica., Peta-Ann Cherie Long May 2015

Michael Manley’S Nationalism In The 1970s: An Analysis Of The Speeches As Prime Minister Of Jamaica., Peta-Ann Cherie Long

Theses - ALL

Abstract

Leaders and aspiring leaders nurture visions of the nations they want to develop. To fulfill their visions, they develop platforms based on their perceptions of national problems. Ideally, platforms become programs that can create better futures for their people. This concept of governance illuminates the leadership of Michael Manley, who embraced a democratic socialist philosophy to map the future of Jamaica in the 1970s. With campaign slogans like “Better Must Come” and “Forward Together,” Manley conceived of a nation that would embody principles of equality, social justice, and co-operation. I argue that his efforts to develop this new society …

Assessing The Relationship Between Landscape Change And Conservation Plans Since 1991 In Tompkins County, Ny, Kelly Nickodem May 2015

Assessing The Relationship Between Landscape Change And Conservation Plans Since 1991 In Tompkins County, Ny, Kelly Nickodem

Theses - ALL

Various levels of government try to manage the spread of urbanization and the increasing threat to open space and agricultural lands by implementing various comprehensive or conservation plans. Extensive research has also studied the changing landscape using remote sensing and GIS, yet little has been done to connect the environmental policies with these technologies. Using Tompkins County, New York as a case study, this project attempts to combine these two aspects by examining how land-cover and land-use is changing over time with respect to environmental policies put in place at various governmental levels. Each town in the county has developed …

The Red Cross’ Mediated Advocacy Campaigns: Outreach And The Civil Imagination, Heather Powell May 2015

The Red Cross’ Mediated Advocacy Campaigns: Outreach And The Civil Imagination, Heather Powell

Theses - ALL

Robert DeChaine’s Global Community seeks to understand how NGOs create and participate in global community. I aspire to join DeChaine’s conversation by examining digital platforms in use for outreach. I use Kingston and Stam’s categorizations of Supersize and Theory 2.0 as guides for understanding how NGOs communicate with constituents via the Internet. Additionally, Ariella Azoulay’s conception of civil positioning provides a framework with which to illustrate how the Internet affords identification with the unfamiliar. I present three case studies: a historical review of the American Red Cross’ outreach efforts, a online flash-game provided by the ICRC called Prisoners of War, …

Operation Mapping: Cartography, Intelligence, And The 3rd Battle Of Gaza, 1917, Joel Radunzel May 2015

Operation Mapping: Cartography, Intelligence, And The 3rd Battle Of Gaza, 1917, Joel Radunzel

Theses - ALL

World War I sparked numerous innovations in military cartography. In the Palestine theater as elsewhere, the British and Dominion forces leveraged new technologies, including aerial photography and wireless intercepts, to supplement their use of intelligence to map enemy troop positions. The creation and distribution of these position maps by the 7th Field Survey Company for the 3rd Battle of Gaza in late 1917 represented an innovative process of intelligence gathering, map production, and knowledge distribution. This thesis not only examines the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) along with its subordinate intelligence assets and cartographic organizations as a comprehensive mapping system, but …
