Mestizo, Negro, Blanco—What Does It Mean? Racism And Colorism’S Effects In The Latinx Community, Frida Alvarez
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
This study explores how Latinxs understand their racial identity and how colorism emerges, develops and evolves in the lives of Latinxs. We want to look into how racial identity affects race and color perceptions and relationships in the community. Data in this study came from 10 individuals who participated through in-person interviews or submitted a paper survey between March 2018 and March 2019. The patterns that emerged in this research demonstrate a challenge and confusion to Latinx racial identity. Familial influence is a way that colorism and racial identity is formed and understood. Colonial history of Latinxs is also discussed …

Freedom To, From, And For Whom: Analyzing Freedom Discourse In Tiny House Blogs, Kate Bennett
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
The Tiny House movement, characterized by the primary dwelling it is named for, is an emerging field of academic study. The movement encompasses a diverse spectrum of simple living practices that typically serve participants' pursuit of self-defined freedom. Using framing methodologies to root the Tiny House movement as a specific articulation of Voluntary Simplicity, an intersectional approach to understand power and identity, and critical discourse analysis, this study analyzes freedom discourse in publicly available Tiny House blogs to discern positive descriptors of freedom (freedom to); negative descriptors of freedom (freedom from); applications of said freedom (freedom for whom) based on …

What I Learned From Losing, Steven Zilberg
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
The main purpose of this document is to discuss the impact I made upon the St. Cloud community while running for Minnesota Senate as well as to serve as a reflection of what could have been if I won. In addition, I have included what caused me to enter the political realm. It is formatted as a culminating project/portfolio containing both a literature review as well as an appendix made up of surveys pertaining to balancing a budget, law enforcement, and immigration. Fundamental problems that I believe Minnesota residents need to care more about and focus their attention on are …

‘Home Away From Home’: Experiences Of African Women Immigrants Living In Minnesota, Njeri M. Clement
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
This study uses a feminist qualitative methodology and conceptual framework to explore the narrative experiences of African women immigrants living in Minnesota. Specifically, the study documents the multifaceted social, economic, and cultural factors that influence the ways in which these women construct and give meaning to their diasporic experiences. Through in-depth interviews of seven African women immigrants, this study explores the challenges that these women face in the process of settling in their ‘new home’ in the state of Minnesota. Additionally, this study identifies approaches that the women use to negotiate their sense of belonging in their ‘new homes away …

An Analysis Of Academic Social Justice Programs At Five Midwestern Universities, Joshua A. Morey
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
Abstract
Students entering postsecondary academic social justice programs are told they will gain the tools to become potent agents of social change. However, given the relative novelty of social justice as an academic field, there remains a lack of clarity about what exactly social justice encompasses. What principles of inquiry, theory, and practice unify social justice as an academic field? Is there a consistent, coherent conceptualization of social justice and social change agency among social justice faculty? Are there social-historical conditions that foster the development of social justice programs in universities? These questions guided this research project.
The evidence, based …

Community Gardens In Central Minnesota, Kaitlyn E. Printy
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
The focus of this work is to examine community gardens in Central Minnesota (specifically within the three-county area of Benton, Sherburne, and Stearns counties). This paper utilizes qualitative methodologies to compare and contrast community gardens in the area, with attention given to historic context, participation (or lack of) within the community gardening movement, and current community values. Emphasis is given to the differentiation between levels of community within the construct of community gardens as social spaces, as well as the development of the concept of the community garden network among the eighteen gardens studied.

Neoliberalism And Social Justice In The City: An Examination Of Postwar Urban Development In Colombo, Sri Lanka, Leoma T. Van Dort
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
Neoliberal urban development has witnessed tremendous changes in urban landscapes around the world. It has also contributed to increasing inequalities and social injustices in these changing urban landscapes. This study is an attempt to explore how neoliberal urban processes and accumulation by dispossession have shaped the new and rapid urban (re)development drive in Sri Lanka that is dramatically restructuring Colombo’s landscape and the socio-economic positions of its people. The post-war Sri Lankan governments’ initiation of a complete transformation and reinvention of the city’s built environment—through large-scale market-oriented infrastructural developments that would attract financial direct investments and promote public-private partnerships—has also …
Recycling Historical Events And Outcomes: Is Another World Possible Through Social Movement Activity?, Robbie A. Paul
Recycling Historical Events And Outcomes: Is Another World Possible Through Social Movement Activity?, Robbie A. Paul
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
Abstract
From the left, there seems to be too much emphasis placed on blaming the “free-market, and neo-liberalism” (Bricmont, 2006; McNally, 2002). By doing so, modern social movement avoids the real issue which is “capitalism” (Wood, 2003). Thus, there seems to be evidence that current social movement activity has done little more than reproduce the same tactics used post-1960s, and while their actions may have awakened certain sets of social consciousness, they have yielded little socio-structural change, due either to their irrational ideologies and strategies in response to social inequality or their rational attempt(s) to innovate them. By taking this …
Democratic Revolution And Capitalist Development Of Mongolia, Batbayar Erdenebat
Democratic Revolution And Capitalist Development Of Mongolia, Batbayar Erdenebat
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
Abstract
Mongolia, commonly referred to as Minegolia, was one of the longest, purely communist countries in existence. In 1921, political elites and military leaders successfully created a communist revolution (People’s Revolution), established their first constitution, and announced independency to the world, with support of the Soviet government and army. For eighty years MPRP, a one-party system, ruled the country. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990, eastern European and other communist countries demonstrated change and a new era of development. This democratic revolution was a western way of civilization, but it didn’t exclude Mongolia. Young scholars, elites, students, …
Mining Companies And Csr In Guinea: Use The U.N. Global Compact Model To Improve Lives, Mariama Cire Kebe
Mining Companies And Csr In Guinea: Use The U.N. Global Compact Model To Improve Lives, Mariama Cire Kebe
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
Mining Companies tend to exploit natural resources in developing countries such as Guinea, to the detriment of the local population (Amaeshi, Adi, Ogbechie,& Amao,2007); (Kefee, 2013); (Hamann, 2003). Government officials in such countries often do not work in the better interests of the citizens due to corruption and other factors (Ayoade, 2011); (Kefee, 2013); (Susson, 2012). In this study the writer presents library-research material on the social, economic, and environmental impact of selective mining companies in Guinea, and the complexities introduced by the actions of local government officials. The writer presents recommendations for improving the interests of the natives of …

Understanding The Nature And Scope Of Patriarchy In Sri Lanka: How Does It Operate In The Institution Of Marriage?, Dinishika Sumuduni Vithanage
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
The purpose of this study is to understand the nature and scope of patriarchy and ways in which it operates within the institution of marriage in Sri Lanka. Patriarchy, as a strong social element along aside religion, gender, and division of labor, has been operating in the Sri Lankan society, pushing women to the household system. One of the main social institutions that has been affected by patriarchic oppression is marriage. Marriage, operating as a social institution, has limited the role of woman in Sri Lanka in certain occupations and behaviors, and even molding the woman’s role in how society …

Making Room In Shelters: Fulfilling The Need For Abused Women, Children And Animals, Sarah Anderson
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
This paper examines the relationship between abuse to humans and animals by reviewing literature regarding the bond between humans and animals and the ignored problem of abuse. Because women may delay leaving their abusers to keep their animals safe, it is important for organizations to meet the needs of both humans and animals. The following paper evaluate programs that already exist in Minnesota. I examined the best practices in Minnesota shelters to determine what is working to successfully meet the needs of abused women, children and animals. Recommendations were made from the analysis to ensure that the needs of human …

Social Capital At The Rural Winter Farmers’ Market: An Exploratory Study Connected To Sustainability And Local Food Systems, Shaun S. Phillips
Culminating Projects in Social Responsibility
Farmer's markets have seen phenomenal growth in the United States since 1994, and in the last five years winter farmers' markets (WFMs) have also gained popularity. In this study, I explore social capital which consists of social networks, trust and reciprocity, and resources (Glanville and Bienenstock, 2009) at the WFM with the aim of learning about the role of the social capital with a focus on the vendors. Despite being seldom used in empirical studies, I employ James Coleman's ( 1988) forms of social capital which include: obligations, expectations, and trustworthiness of structures, information channels, and norms and sanctions, and …

The goal of these credit schemes is to help the rural poor, especially women earn a living through their on-going income generating activities.
This study found that micro-credit programs are very helpful in empowering rural women to enhance their economic activities to meet the needs of their families as well as afford them the opportunity to contribute in household decisions.
