China's Rise And The Confucius Institutes: Chinese And American Perspectives, Shryll Whittaker Dec 2013

China's Rise And The Confucius Institutes: Chinese And American Perspectives, Shryll Whittaker

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The Confucius Institutes are Chinese government-backed nonprofit organizations that promote Chinese language and culture. They are housed on collegiate campuses and designed to complement Chinese language and cultural studies by providing teachers, curriculums, textbooks and other educational materials. Their establishment has been a source of controversy, especially in the United States, due to the institutes’ close ties with and the financial, administrative, and political support they receive from the Chinese government. Critics have had two primary concerns: that the Confucius Institutes provide the Chinese government access to increase soft power by issuing propaganda and that their presence on American collegiate …

Environmental- And Ethanol-Induced Effects On Reference And Short-Term Memory In The Rat, Kimberly Ramos Dec 2013

Environmental- And Ethanol-Induced Effects On Reference And Short-Term Memory In The Rat, Kimberly Ramos

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Environmental enrichment (EE) is a combination of complex physical and social stimulation beyond that which would be received in standard or isolated laboratory housing. Continuous enrichment paradigms have been shown, among other influences, to increase neurogenesis and dendritic branching, and enhance learning and memory. Recently, the preventative effects of enrichment have been considered, specifically relating to drugs of abuse (Solinas, Thiret, Chauvet, & Jaber 2010; Stairs & Bardo 2009). This series of studies examined the effects of daily EE on reference memory and short-term memory, as assessed in the radial arm water maze (RAWM) and Morris water maze (MWM). Sprague-Dawley …

Gender And Corporate Sustainability: On Values, Vision, And Voice, Joan L. Slepian, Gwen E. Jones Dec 2013

Gender And Corporate Sustainability: On Values, Vision, And Voice, Joan L. Slepian, Gwen E. Jones

Organization Management Journal

This article presents an exploratory empirical study of the role of gender in sustainability initiatives and practices in a sample of 925 men and women from American companies. We explore gender differences and their implications for sustainability values, priorities, and perceptions of sustainability-related activities in the workplace. Drawing from studies of sustainability, gender, and environmental values and action, our study finds that corporate women hold sustainability-related concerns and values to be significantly more important to them personally than do their male colleagues, and they view and evaluate their companies’ sustainability-related value priorities, initiatives, and activities from these foundational ethical and …

From Endogenization To Justification: Strategic Responses To Legitimacy Challenges In Contentious Organizational Fields, Paul-Brian Mcinerney Dec 2013

From Endogenization To Justification: Strategic Responses To Legitimacy Challenges In Contentious Organizational Fields, Paul-Brian Mcinerney

Organization Management Journal

Fields are contested social arenas. By examining the case of a single organization, in this case a social enterprise, the author shows how organizations respond to legitimacy challenges from members of the field and how such responses shape the organization’s form and practices. At times, organizations endogenize, that is, incorporate practices from the field. Findings indicate that responses reflect strategies under constraint. Endogenizing institutionalized practices constrains managers’ ability to exercise agency. Endogenizing contested practices afford agency by allowing managers to translate those practices to accord with local exigencies. This article extends literature on impression management and institutional theory by showing …

Integrating Corporate Sustainability And Organizational Strategy Within The Undergraduate Business Curriculum, Jamie R. Wieland, Dale E. Fitzgibbons Dec 2013

Integrating Corporate Sustainability And Organizational Strategy Within The Undergraduate Business Curriculum, Jamie R. Wieland, Dale E. Fitzgibbons

Organization Management Journal

Corporate sustainability (CS) requires organizations to shift focus from short-term financial goals to further consider the long-term social, environmental, and economic implications of their operations. Despite a lack of regulations in the United States requiring companies to disclose social and environmental measures, more than 80% of U.S. corporations voluntarily release corporate responsibility reports. The increased focus of CS in practice has impacted many business curricula to adapt CS-related courses (such as business ethics); however, we present results that indicate that such means may have limited influence on students’ views concerning the legitimacy of social and environmental issues in regard to …

Organizational Downsizing During An Economic Crisis: Survivors’ And Victims’ Perspectives, Roselie Mcdevitt, Catherine Giapponi, Deborah M. Houston Dec 2013

Organizational Downsizing During An Economic Crisis: Survivors’ And Victims’ Perspectives, Roselie Mcdevitt, Catherine Giapponi, Deborah M. Houston

Organization Management Journal

The recession that began in 2007 resulted in organizational retrenchment strategies focused on workforce reductions. In order to successfully emerge from this crisis and sustain long-term viability for their organizations, managers needed to reengage surviving employees and minimize the potential for retaliatory behavior by the victims of the downsizing activities. An understanding of the perceptions of both survivors and victims is critical when managers implement downsizing and recovery strategies. The psychological contract and attribution theory were used to examine employee perceptions post downsizing. The variables of interest in this study include employee perceptions related to organizational communication; understanding and agreement …

Effects Of Trauma Induced Stress On Attention, Executive Functioning, Processing Speed, And Resilience In Urban Children, Antoinette Welsh Dec 2013

Effects Of Trauma Induced Stress On Attention, Executive Functioning, Processing Speed, And Resilience In Urban Children, Antoinette Welsh

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Brain development, and particularly structures involved in executive functioning, occurs at different rates in children, leading to differential performance in school. Due to neuroanatomical changes secondary to the stress response, children who have experienced stress as a result of poverty and traumatic events may be at increased risk for cognitive difficulties, including attention, executive functioning, and processing speed (Blair, Granger, & Razza, 2005; DeBellis, Hooper, & Sapia, 2005). Prevalence rates among urban children suggest that 70-100% have been exposed to trauma (Dempsey, Overstreet, & Moely, 2000; Macy, Baryry, & Noam, 2003). Some of these children develop posttraumatic stress disorder and …

Effects Of Exposure To Abuse And Violence In Childhood On Adult Attachment And Domestic Violence In Women’S Same-Sex Relationships, Dawn M. Beatty Dec 2013

Effects Of Exposure To Abuse And Violence In Childhood On Adult Attachment And Domestic Violence In Women’S Same-Sex Relationships, Dawn M. Beatty

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

ABSTRACT

There is an abundance of previous research proving that childhood abuse and adult domestic violence is an increasingly serious problem (Smith Slep, & O’Leary, 2005). However, while studies have shown that lesbian intimate battering occurs as frequently, if not more than, heterosexual domestic violence (Gosselin, [ARF1] 2003; Niolon, 2002), it remains understudied. Therefore, this study not only examines the relationship between childhood abuse and intimate lesbian violence but also secure and insecure attachment styles. Children who witness domestic violence or who are victims of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse are likely to repeat or engage in violent relationships later …

Sex Differences In Mother-Infant Interaction, Klaudia Kosiak Nov 2013

Sex Differences In Mother-Infant Interaction, Klaudia Kosiak

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Sex differences in human behavior have frequently been explored by researchers. Although there are numerous studies documenting sex differences between boys and girls from childhood into adulthood, few studies have adequately examined how genetics and environment interact in infancy to promote sex differences in infant behavior. Therefore, the present study sought to examine how sex differences in maternal behavior interact with differences in infant behavior. Maternal and infant behaviors were analyzed within the still-face paradigm, a paradigm which allows for examination of mother-infant interaction in normal, stressful, and recovery situations. It was hypothesized that infant boys would react with more …

The Advanced Practice Nurse And Patient-Centered Medical Home: Maintaining Patient Focus, Meeting The Institute For Healthcare Improvement Triple Aim Through The Electronic Health Record, Aileen Teresa Twomey

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

The Federal Government enacted the Heath Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) in 2009, which incentivized providers to use electronic health records (EHR) for meaningful use (MU); the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) stems from the Act. Research by the National Council on Quality Assurance (NCQA) shows that primary care practices have a positive influence on the health of patients, families and communities. These positive influences are related to their ability to deliver first-contact access, and to develop long-term therapeutic relationships that focus on the person rather than the disease, improving patient health outcomes and reducing health care …

A Social Exchange Model Of Psychological Contract Fulfillment: Where Do Promises, Expectations, Lmx, And Pos Fit In?, Anjali Chaudhry, Amanuel G. Tekleab

Organization Management Journal

We investigated psychological contract (PC) fulfillment using the three building blocks of the social exchange theory: content of the exchange, parties to the exchange, and the process of the exchange. Results from two studies demonstrate that PC fulfillment is related to different outcomes depending on fulfillment conceptualized in terms of promises as opposed to expectations. Expectations fulfillment is a stronger predictor of affective commitment, whereas promises fulfillment is a stronger predictor of turnover. Additionally, we tested hypotheses to examine the multisource effects of PC fulfillment. PC fulfillment by the supervisor and by the organization highlighted the relationship between PC fulfillment, …

Riverton Press: An Exercise In Principled Negotiation, Joe Seltzer Sep 2013

Riverton Press: An Exercise In Principled Negotiation, Joe Seltzer

Organization Management Journal

Negotiation is coming into increased use as a topic in business schools, with an emphasis on new approaches such as principled negotiation (Fisher, Ury, & Patton, 2011). This provides an alternative to the “position-based” negotiations of the labor–management tradition that used primarily distributive bargaining. While the literature has expanded, there seems to be a shortage of experiential exercises that work well. I present the “Riverton Press,” which is a two-person role-play that asks participants to negotiate using the ideas of principled negotiation. A short summary of the theory of principled negotiation, teaching notes, examples of classroom use and student responses, …

Middle Managers Of The Leadership Classroom: Realizing The Developmental Capacity Of Teaching Assistants, Lisa Rosh, Thimothy J. Tobin Sep 2013

Middle Managers Of The Leadership Classroom: Realizing The Developmental Capacity Of Teaching Assistants, Lisa Rosh, Thimothy J. Tobin

Organization Management Journal

In this phenomenological study, the authors explore exemplar teaching assistants’ experiences and perceptions of their work in supporting leadership development for undergraduate business students. Findings demonstrate that successful, effective teaching assistants whose role is to cultivate students’ leadership competencies conceptualize their roles as middle managers in the classroom, acting independently and focusing on system stability. Forming professional networks and establishing physical and psychological boundaries support their developmental roles. Based on the findings, the authors present guidelines for universities that use teaching assistants in developmental roles, strategies for individuals who serve as assistants, and implications for future research.

Perceptions Of Positive Growth Following Breast Cancer In Survivor Couples, Katherine Boyd Jul 2013

Perceptions Of Positive Growth Following Breast Cancer In Survivor Couples, Katherine Boyd

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of couples following breast cancer and their perceptions of growth as a result of their experiences with the illness. Qualitative methodology, specifically a phenomenological research design, was utilized to gain understanding of couples’ perceptions and interpretations of growth, particularly within the contexts of couple relationships. Ten survivor couples participated in the study. Study data was collected through semistructured interviews with the couple jointly. Genograms were constructed for each couple and were utilized to track couples’ experiences with illness, care-taking, and growth following adverse or traumatic situations. Data analysis revealed …
