The second feminist wave in the 1960s has influenced feminists to increase their campaign against patriarchy in almost all areas. This campaign aims to achieve equal legal, political and social rights for women. In this context, they view education as a vehicle to empower women in societies. Using Javanese culture as an example, this article will examine whether education has much impact on it, and to identify factors which prevent education from empowering women in Indonesia. From the analysis, it has shown that educated women still faced many obstacles to participate in economical, political and social aspects.

Violence Permeating Daily Life: A Qualitative Study Investigating Perspectives On Violence Among Women In Karachi, Pakistan, Tazeen S. Ali Dr, Gunilla Krantz Dr, Ingrid Mogren Dr

This study explored how married women perceive situations which create family conflicts and lead to different forms of violence in urban Pakistan. In addition, it examines perceptions of consequences of violence, their adverse health effects, and how women resist violence within marital life. METHODS: Five focus group discussions were conducted with 28 women in Karachi. Purposive sampling, aiming for variety in age, employment status, education, and socioeconomic status, was employed. The focus group discussions were conducted in Urdu and translated into English. Manifest and latent content analysis were applied. This report presents the findings of the review of the DGTTF-funded project, System for Monitoring and Evaluation of Democratic Governance in Paraguay. The project took place over 15 months from March 2008 to June 2009 with a DGTTF grant of $100,000 to cover the costs of the preparation and publication of the baseline governance assessment framework. This review assesses the extent to which the project was innovative and catalytic in the Paraguayan context. It considers what has made the project succeed or fail, and why. This paper informs on the work of an action research group set up to investigate the status and experiences of black women managers within an organisational context in the UK. It relates how the group rapidly becomes a ‘participatory’ action research group when it is recognised that the black women managers share the common perception that theirs’ is an experience of oppression and potential powerlessness in their organisational setting. Empowerment results as common experiences shared are identified also the immediate and longer term steps being taken towards their ‘emancipation’.
